This would seem to be the philosophy whereby Miss Forsee has served so efficiently and effectively as a teacher. At the close of this school year she will retire from teaching, only to use each new morning as an opportunity for other endeavor-writing, travel, recreation. etc. If all her former students would put their thoughts together, they would want to say, Hlt is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Clinton High School's self-governing body is the Student Council. As stated in the constitution, the organization has its purpose 'sto promote loyalty and unity among the students of our school, to provide a wide-spread exchange of student opinion, to promote the general welfare of the students through cooperation with the faculty, the school administration and community, and to develop a greater spirit of democracy. tl Q Ct OFFICERS AND ADVISERS Left to right: Byrl Swanson, treasurerg Mr. Maynard Hansen, Mr. John Nielsen, Becky Carnes, vice president, Miss Helen Stoddard, Jack Rockwell, president, Mr. David Kirkman, head adviser. Yvon is our fir:-t French exchange student. Others have been three boys from Germany and a girl from Denmark. P -or The Council is composed of the four student body officers, the four officers from each class and eight other students from each class. One of the chief projects is arranging for the foreign exchange student program at CHS. The group secures funds for this project by such means as roller-skating parties, bake sales, and car washes. This year the group also sold Shares of De- mocracy in order to give everyone a chance to contribute. Another of the projects this year was the compilation and sale of student directories. Faculty members give rating points to those juniors and seniors who have the necessary grade point average. Traits considered are Character. Scholarship. Leadership and Service. Tutoring is one of the projects carried on by some FTA members. When tutoring, the student 'iteacherw and the Npupilw both benefit from the enlightening experience. The person being tutored may be so benefited that he rises as much as two grade levels a quarter if he so desires. The tutor, on the other hand, is meeting first hand the problems of conveying the subject matter to the student and recognizing other problems involved in teaching. I1 TUTORS By making use of source material, tutors i Larry Jakubsen and Joyce Nissley are trying to simplify and explain a difficult assignment to a student. This illustrates some common problems the tutor and pupil confront. '- ,-vftnb 38, ., Qilfi .. wr- f ' Xb 6 ..,.t....ashi Thr 1957 Building Trades house was the most ambitious undertaking so far. For several years Nlr It-onard Wilson has his boys meeting new probltms as they build a house from the foun- da ion to the last hit of trim. Qt v - ixfi. X 'F'-and in Building Trades is the course which provides eighteen junior and senior boys with the best of practical experience in construction work. Aside from a few things which have to be done by professionals lsuch as furnace and plumbing installationl. the boys build a complete house each year. Land and materials are provided by the school board and the house is sold to the highest bidder. Experience is provided in cement work, in general construction, in plastering. and in cabinet work. Some of the boys get extra training in cabinet making from one of the local firms. The boys comprising the group are chosen by Mr. Wilson. They spend each school- day morning working on the house and its accompanying problems, returning to CHS for fourth hour. ln addition to this vocations work. they are in social studies classes, and the juniors are also in English classes. 0 O Front row: ,lack Andresen. Our River King football teanfs record of five wins and four losses doesn7t really show the type of ball Clinton played. since they played the top teams in the area. The Kings lost their first few games because of fumbleitis,H but seemed to have this situation well in hand as the season closed. Highlight of the season was the Homecoming victory over Roosevelt. The game which was most heartbreaking for the Kings to lose was the Cedar Rapids Wilson game in which the River Kings were strongly favored. ln the Nlississippi Valley Conference Clinton finished third behind Davenport and Dubuque.
