Ken Miner Coach Howard Judd produced another team this year that he may well be proud of. The big highlight of the campaign was capturing the state championship, although there were many exciting times during the dual meets. - One of the most exciting times was when Dave Stamp, Gary Morris, Gene Guidebeck and Ed Brown set a new national record in the 400-yard relay. Then Gary Morris came back and set a new john Fenlon . 'l,.. 1954 Stale national record in the 200-yard free style. Later in the season a relay team composed of Gary Morris, Ed Brown, Dave Stamp and Dave Gorman bettered the mark in the 400-yard relay by .4 of a second. One of the interesting things to note was the way some of the boys improved from the beginning of the season to the end. Ed Brown started the season with a 1:18 for the 120-yard individual medley and ended up with a 1:14.3 fa new state recordj. Herman Dierks started the season with a 1:12 and ended with a 1107.8 in the 100-yard back stroke and fourth place in the state meet. John Fenlon began with a 1:07.4 in the 100-yard breast-stroke and ended up with a 1:05.8 and the state championship in that event. Gene Guidebeck turned in a 1:05.6 in the first meet and a l:03.5 at the state which gave him a second in the 100- Page 88 il 3 1 'NTI' Ed Brown Dave Stamp Champions THE CLINTON SWIMMERS WHO PLACED AT STATE ARE: 40 yard free style 100 yard free style 100 yard breast stroke 200 yard free style 100 yard back stroke Diving 120 yard individual medley 180 yard medley relay 160 yard free style , Brown - 4, Gorman Morris - 2, Stamp , Fenlon Morris - 2, Stamp Guidebeck - 4, Dierks Miner - 5, Maurek , Brown Clinton fGuidebeck, Fenlon, Zentnerj Clinton QI-Iarden, Holleran, Glovka, Zastrowj Gene Guidebeck yard backstroke. Ken Miner's best score for the season was a 232.4 points, a very fine performance. In the 40-yard free style Dave Gorman started the season with a 21.7, but before the season was over, he hit a 19 Hat. Last but not least is Gary Morris. Varsity Basketball This year was one ol' those years tor the Clinton High Sehool River Kings. In several ol' the games we were beaten more by fate than the opposing teams, In siieh games we were either tied or ahead. and then lost in the last few seconds on fouls. Clinton started out the season with a 51-51 tie with Fulton in the W.J.H.S, erin, This was the result of a mix up by ollieials as the horn ended the game. Next we traveled down river to Muscatine where we were defeated by a seore ot' 63--15. Our first vit-tory ot' the season was over Dixon 63-56. Then Dubuque eame to Clinton and just got by with a 70-65 victory over the inueh improved River Kings. The Kings traveled to St. Ambrose. where we reeeived a 59--16 defeat at the hands of Gene l7u11'5'. the tleetfooted Knight forward. In the game with Wilson of Cedar Rapids. Diek Farwell set a new school and WJHS gym seoring record ot' 36 points and led Clinton to a TT-50 vietory. Our next eaine. also with a Cedar Rapids school. McKinley. resulted in a defeat. Then the River Kings made a trip all the way' to XYhiting. Indiana to show the Hoosiers some real basketball as George Rogers Clark scraped out a 60-60 victory. In liast and YVest Hot'kt'ord. Clinton played two games in a row, West lloektord handed Clinton a 56-52 defeat. and the next night East took a 63-62 victory, These were two ot' the fate games. Our down-the-river rivals, Davenport. eame to Clinton next and finally won out. 65-53. when some of our regulars fouled out. v In another ot' our fate games. Iowa City won out on their home eourt by a seore of 59-58. This was accomplished by two free throws in the last seconds of the game. At Dubuque. a week later, Clinton led most of the way but was defeated in the last seconds and lost another fate game 57-55. Clinton seemed to be breaking the jinx when Kewanoe went home with the short end of a 66-62 seore. Pa lge 91 We then travelled to Cedar Rapids where we re- eeived a 66-61 defeat at the hands of Roosevelt. Clinton got into the winning Columns when the iniieh improved River Kings handed Museatine, the teain destined to be state champions, a 68-58 defeat. Oni' next eanie was with Franklin of Cedar Rapids. lied lw Diek Farwell. who seored 37 points to break his own seoring records set earlier in the season. the River Kings easily won T3-62. Next we again played our down-the-river rival. Davenport. and were stunned with a 78--18 defeat. Iowa City eame to Clinton and we gained revenge by defeating them 55-52. Dick Farwell set a new Mississippi Valley seoring reeord of 2-17 points. Vie then lost to Freeport's fantastic stalling type ol' play. Much credit should bc given to Marske and Sander who did an excellent job of rebounding. This gained us a berth in the state tournament Sweet Sixteen. As was stated before, fate held the deciding card in many of the games. We had some good players and two of the regulars, Herb Marske and Jan Sander will be back again next year. Cinton can feel proud that it had Dick Farwell named on the All-State first team. Much of the tearn's success also should go to Pat Cunningham and Dick Warner, without whose spirit and playmaking we would have been lost.
