Q 1-7, we Pat Cunningham Richard Farwell Alan Foster Carl Ehlers Dick Warner State Breaking into the state tournament for the hrst time since the Firewagon Five days of 1946, Clinton High School brought home the third place trophy, and with St. Mary's High as first place winner, helped establish Clinton as Iowa's basketball city. The great Comeback Kids made sub-state after beating Loras fDubuqueD 79-68 in the district tournament here. St. Ambrose CDavenportJ, whose Knights we had already defeated twice by a narrow margin, we again defeated in an overtime 53-50. The Comeback Kids showed equal ability in smothering Iowa City 77-50, thus winning a berth in the Sweet Sixteen. In our first game in the 1953 state tournament, we showed Mt. Ayr some championship basketball, trouncing them 73-69. The next night we treated the high-rated Roosevelt CDes Moinesj team with some more fast moving basketball and downed them 65-47. Then it came. The next night Ottumwa, led by sharp-shooting Don Parsons, stopped Clinton in an overtime S3-49. The overtime was the result ol' a beautiful shot made by Kenny Ploen in the last seconds of the regular period.
