Hem WAYNE THOMS President PHILIP LEAHY Vice -President SENIOR CLASS HISTORY If I could have one wish glranted to me next September, I would wish that the ands of time could turn back to September 7, 1948. That's right, the class of '52 would be freshmen again. As freshmen we got off to a good start. We chose Frank Sutton, presidentg Stanley Felderman, vice-presidentg Sally Jacobs, secretary, and John Lynn, treasurer. Senators for the first semester were Margaret Christian, Richard Higgins, Wayne Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Dickerson, Ronald Sley, and Doris Aplin. For second semester Shirley Manning took Margaret Christian's place in the group. John Maxheim represented us in Supreme Court. Soon we were getting ready for our first Home- coming. The floats were surely a lot of work, but we thought we might win a prize and fame for our class. That was one year when on one could say the bonfire was small! Margaret Christian was elected as freshman attendant to the queen. Our boys began early to show ability in sports. John Gool, Philip Leahy, and Robert Pearson were our star football players. Basketball found us yellin for Stan Felder- man and Rollie Koch. We watches? Ken Haddad and Bill Titus wrestle. Ronald Sley and James McCullough gave us our tennis thrills. In swimming we had Maurie McCul1en, Bob Hollowell, and Howard Judd, Jr, That spring Wayne Thoms, John Maxheim, and Stan Felder- man did the running for us. Sherrill Beil was our Gateway attendant. Our class showed some trend to- ward the intellectualwirh Doris Aplin and Stan Felder- man leading us in grades. Before we knew it we were sophomores, electing Stanley Felderman, presidentg Robert Hollowell, vice- presidentg Jean Kirst, secretaryg and Maurice McCullen, treasurer. Our senators were Margaret Christian, Mary Elizabeth Dickerson, John Lynn, James Mc- Cullough, Ronald Sley, and Wayne Thoms, Richard Higgins replaced John Lynn in second semester. Sally Jacobs was in Supreme Court. Sally Carnes became our Homecoming attendant, and Marigrace O'Brien was our Gateway Classic choice. How well I remember our junior year! We elected Kenneth White, president: Stanley Felderman, vice-presidentg Sherrill Beil, secretaryg and Maurie McCullen,. treasurer. Sally Carnes and Maurie were associate justices in Supreme Court. Our senators were Margaret Christian, Mary Elizabeth Dickerson, William Goltman, Robert Hollowell, Jack King, John Lynn. In second semester, Peter Nielsen and James Ashby replaced Sley and Herrick. by Diane Smith along, we picked Shirley Backer as junior attendant in the queen's court. How fast the year went! Stanley Felderman and Doris Aplin were inducted into National Honor Society. Sherrill Beil was mama in Cheaper by the Dozen , and John Lynn and John Petrehn had parts in Papa Is All . No Junior Carnival was ever quite as good as ours with Charleen Larson and Phil Leahy as queen and king. We cheered for Koch, Felderman, Maxheim, Leahy, and Pearons in varsity basketball and went into the sub-state with them. Spring brought the Gateway, and Dorothy Helble was our attendant to the queen. Oh, yes, WayneTh0mS and Sherrill Beil were the Prom royalty. Why, it's September 1951. As seniors we elected Wayne Thoms, presidentg Philip Leahy, vice-president: Norma Petersen, secretary, and Roland Koch, treasurerg David Adams was in Supreme Court, Robert Herrick, chief justice, and James Ashby, sergeant-at-arms. Heading the student body were Stanley Felderman, presidentg William Goltman, vice-president: Sherrill Beil, secretaryg Jack King, treasurerg and Frank Sutton, attorney general. Senators for first semester were Ronald Sley, James McCullough, Robert Hollowell, Mlary Elizabeth Dickerson, Robert Herrick, and John Lynn. In second semester, Peter Nielsen and James Ashby replaced Sley and Herrick. Our last Homecoming was one to remember. Joan Zirbes led the majorettesg Mary Elizabeth Dick- erson was the queen, and Dorothy Helble, senior attendant. Our basketball team went into the sub- state with Felderman, Leahy, Pearson, Maxheim, and Koch doing their best to beat Davenport. The Class of 1952 may not be the most outstanding in sports, but it has plenty of other accomplishments. Frank Sutton and Doris Aplin won American history awards as juniors, and Doris won the Legion oratorical contest. David Adams and Crystal Wilson won awards in art, and Jack King can't be beaten on the sax. Throughout the years we have lost a few class- mates. Some, as Richard Higgins and Dorothy Benjamin, moved away. Some, as Robert Jones, John Petrehn, and Chris Byers, joined Uncle Sam's military family. One, Bill Clark, fought a losing battle with polio. In general, the Class of 1952 can look back at the past four years and hope the next forty are as grand. V F aw if? SATURDAY NIGHT IN OCTOBER: Quite a few of us worked today replacing a path near CHS with a sidewalk, John Nelson and Jack Jorgensen gave us technical advice. Carroll Jones and Allan Horn helped build the forms. Stan Felderman and Dick Hensel appointed themselves supervisors. Shirley Backer, Elaine Gabel, Joan Grell, Shirley Heath, and Louise Wilcox carried water. Tom Burken, Dick Carstensen, and Ron Ro- chelle carried sacks ofcement. Marlene Mumm, Marie Huston, Elsie Judd, and Marilyn Carstens helped Don Moore mix the concrete. Mary Dickerson, Marilyn Hagge, Fayette Jorgensen, Janet Lee, and Marilyn Shinn transported the mixed concrete. Arlene Williams, Pat Widner, Marilyn Slapnicka, and Betty Weinbeck helped Darrell Thomsen smooth out the sidewalk. Natalie Sloppy, Marjorie Vaughn, Alberta Wiebers, and Diane Smith collected money for the project. Dave Hoialmen, Ron Jones, Bob Kuehl, Bob Neumann, and Charles Nixon spent the day playing in the sand. Duane Reynolds spent his time fixing drinking fountains in the building itself. Nancy Seeser, Norma Petersen, Judith Matzen, Geraldine Keegan, and Jo Ann Hill helped him. Louis Paaske worked at odd jobs around school. Natalie Bennett, Dorla Hartzell, Carolynn Hebeler, Doloris Giddings, and Joyce Schwartz comprised his crew. Arthera Bier, Marilyn Brown, Doris Cramm, Beverly Dannatt, and Joan Dierks made signs giving directions to our school. Shirley Enwright, Luella Flack, Diane Galbrait , Dorothy I-lelble, Joanne Metzger, Jo Ann Owen, Dolorus Petersen, Gloria Rasmussen, and Kathryn Roman put them up around town. CHRISTMAS VACATION: I went coasting behind the high school today. Frank Sutton, Jim Ashby, Bill Warner, Dick Miller, Richard Lehmkuhl, Rollie Koch, Nils Kwick, Dick Curtis, Charles Stuhlman, Jack King, and Fred Sloane were there with their sleds. Sherrill Beil, Doris Aplin, Marigrace O'Brien, Nina Yealy, Chrystal Wilson, and Joan Merschwere also there. John Maxheim threw his shoulder out of jointand Emma Country- man broke her ankle in skiing mishaps. Bob and Bill Long put their first aid training to good use. CHRISTMAS VACATION: LATER DATE: Betsy Cooper, Bob Day, John Lynn, Joyce MacAllister, Doris Obermiller, Margaret Wildfansgl, Dave O'Connor, Marguerite Thomp- son, John Van Epps, Melvin Vaughn, and Dick inter formed a oup which appeared on a television show tonight. Jim Bark, Mike Cummings, Lois Tin?-lenberg, and Jo Ann Zirbes sang in a quartet. VALENTINE'S DAY: Tom Klomp gave me a handmade valentine today. A lot of the boys made them this year. Darrell Alm, Russ Annear, Bob Dierks, Dick Ellison, Carl Lorenzen, Bob Pearson, and Phil Leahy are experts. Some boys, like Dick Seagren, Jack Starbuck, Roy Sanderson, and Dick Goddard wrote awfully mushy notes on theirs. TOURNAMENT GAME AGAINST IOWA CITY: Iwent in the girls' bus. We had a flat but Barb McLane and Gloria Wolfe got it fixed in no time at all. When we got there, the game was about to start. Maurie McCullen and Ronald Henry had driven out. Gor- don Jorgensen, Pete Klopp, Bob Herrick, Ronnie Sley, Peggy Barnard, Dianne Flannery, Blpb Ho lowell, Gary Happs, Pat Cramm, and Janice Haringwere among the gang already t ere. 0 0 0 SPINSTERS' SPREE: The floor was so slippery that Wayne Thoms fell down. Barb Skiff, GAA president, gave the prize for the best vegetable corsage to John Gool and Sally Carnes. It certainly was different! Charlene Larson, Bev Byers, Margaret Christian, Marcehe Ringueitte, and Shirley Manning were there with very nice looking older men. Speaking of older men, Ihear that Norma Rascher, Carol Weissenberger, Jean Fay, and Joyce Mills are all going steady with college boys. BACHELORS' DINER DANCE: Velma Brovxm was sick that night so Howard Judd came by himself. On the way to the dance, Bill Goltman's car finally fell apart. Jean and Joan Hamilton, and Linda Doffin spent a good part of the evening with their shoes off. GYM NIGHT: Everybody was good. I thought l-lerry Boulton, Bill Holm, Danny Board- sen, John Malone, Peter Nielsen, and Bill Holman did especially well. THE DAY BEFORE EASTER: Iworked all day on our project of Easter Bunnies for the kids in town. Jean Kirst and Barbara Anderson were in charge of the kitchen. With the help of Bonnie Kent, Sally Jacobs, Joan Mummert, Betty Martin, and Phyllis Hosette, they hard-boiled and colored eggs, brought in by David Adams and Wayne Ludders. Joyce Jordan and Marcin Lundquist painted pictures on some of the eggs. Donald Good- ridge was in charge of distribution. Some of the other Easter Bunnies were, Bill Carlson, Kenny Haddad, Wayne Dahl, Archie Fink, Bill Titus, Jim McCullough, Richard Bier- mann, and Robert Fuller. Pat Fisher, Diane Edens, Mary Dolan, Mary Lea Eads, and Shirley Helble also were Easter Bunnies. MAY DAY: A group of girls talked George Albrecht into climbing up onto the flag pole and attaching streamers for a May pole dance. Ruth Best was in charge of this ala event. Donna Hrnerichsen, Jo Anne Jess, Delores Johnson, Karleta Kni hrs, Bargara Luckstead, Carole Schaley, Joy Scobey, Charmaine Thomsen, Joyce Wieiers, Fernana lxfliensinger, and Jean Loehndorf did the dancing. Albert Johnson and his guitar provided t e music? 12 'ff 'fi x ef. ' mf ,I ' ea ,f N' h x 4- gvvr...
