Row 3 Verne Drews jack Kane Orvulle Marlowe Lester Kitchen Ted Petersen Row 2 Earl Fenn Marvxn Cheatum Ted Grayes Merlm Helferlch David Ladehoff Row I Conrad Bonebrake Ralph McLarnan Eldon Gade Wxllram Weston Robert Walt Junlor College Basketball Wlth two regulars back from last year, Coach Thomas Sharples pxeced together a squad that won seven and lost mne games Outstandmg games mcluded a heartbreaklng loss to Muscatme Jumor College 1n a double overtxme a hard fought wxn over the Augustana B team and double wms over Molme and Elkader The Jaycees scored a total of 649 pomts whlle therr opponents scored 800 The qumtet opened agamst the more experxenced Cornell varsxty and was defeated 77 to 29 Fenn and Ladehoff paced the local scorers The next was won by Chnton from Elkader Junior College 42 to 30 Dubuque B squad came here and Chnton won 47 to 35 A good Muscatme J C team defeated Clmton 56 to 36 although Chnton was leadmg at the half 20 to 19 The loss of regulars through fouls cost the ball game In a cloe game there the squad defeated Molme 49 to 40 after traxlmg most of the tlme In the next contest the team met Webster Cxty last years J C champxons there and lost, 55 to 33 Fenn paced Chnton In January Clmton defeated Elkader for the second txme 37 to 29 Ladehoff was the hxgh scorer for Clmton Washmgton Jumor College came here next and won 51 to 38 A tall, powerful Burlmgton J C group was the next opponent and xt won, 62 to 31 Kxtchen and Fenn led the scorxng for Clmton Defeat of Augustana B squad 47 to 44 nn an overtxme game put Chnton mto the wmmng column agam The lead changed hands many tmmes and Clmton turned m one of 1ts best performances Next, Chnton lost to Washmgton J C agam 72 to 59 Entertamxng Molme Chnton agam defeated that squad 45 to 39 Thxs vxctory gave the college sxx wms agamst sxx losses In a thrlller whxch went mto two overtlmes the team lost to Muscatme J C , 49 to 45 Ladehoff and Fenn were hxgh pomt men for Clmton At Burlmgton the Jaycees lost for the second txme to that squad 78 to 35 The xllness of two regulars hampered Clmton The halftxme score was 40 to 20 ln Burlmgton s favor The squad defeated Dubuque Umversxty B squad there, 1n a close game 39 to 38 Kitchen sank the wmmng free throw m the final seconds of play The season closed wrth a loss to Boone, here 47 to 36 Krtchen and Ladehoff were hxgh for thexr team Earl Fenn one of the shortest men on the squad was a standout on rebound work Thxs combmed w1th hxs mampu latxve and shootmg abllxty enabled hxm to be second hlgh scorer for Clmton wxth 181 pomts Davxd Ladehoff was the top scorer thus year averagmg twelve pomts per game for sxxteen games Hxs southpaw shots were well known and ln several mstances turned the txdr- of the game Lester Kxtchen played the pxvot post nearly all season and turned rn very xmpressxve ball games Hls rebound work under the baskets was especxally fine Orvxlle Marlowe was an all around good ball player I-Irs rebound work ball handlmg and preclslon shootmg earned hxrn the captamshlp for the current year Ted Petersen was Orvllle s runnmg mate playmg at the other guard posxtxon He was valuabl because of hrs re bound work Verne Drews was not on the startmg five but saw con sxderable actxon m all posxtlons Hxs rebound work was good and a clutch shot occasionally added to the score Marvln Cheatum was not a regular but he saw con sxderable actxon Hrs outstanding feature was hxs floor play and although he was never a heavy scorer, he contrlbuted to the success of the season Ted Grayes saw actxon chxefly from a guard post I-I was known as the long shot artxst of the squad Fenn Marlowe and Petersen recexved second letters whlle Kxtchen Ladehofl' Cheatum, Drews and Grayes recexved thexr first awards Thnrteen 1 . . 1 1 - 1 1 . 1 1 - 1 1 1 - - A I 1 , . . - , , . . . . , , . - u 11 . , ' ' an 11 . . 1 . . . 1 1 1 ' ' . , . , . . . . 1 1 1 - ' 1 ' u 11 ' V 1 1 - . .
