READING COUNTER CLOCKWISE: Marlene Hickman, Peggy Boppenmeyer, and Wanda Buckingham were selected to attend Missouri Girls' State held at Fulton, Missouri, on the William Woods campus. This is one of the most coveted honors awarded to juniors. Mac Eaton, Gene I-Iendrich, and Buddy Wilson were selected to attend Missouri Boys' State. Jim Thompson, Bob Shoemaker, and Robert Neuenschwander represented the local chap- ter of F.F.A. at the State Contest held at Columbia. In the Thomas Jefferson essay contest Dixie Chapman placed first, Ruth Murphy second, and Velma Johnson third. The annual Amer- icanism Conte st sponsored by the American Legion was divided into two divisions. The first division consisted of the seventh and eighth grades of elementary school and the freshmen of high school, the second divi- sion being the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Winner in the first division was Jim Peck, absent when picture was taken, and Nancy Tubbesing second.In the second division Betty Jane Potter won first, and Jeanne Garvin second. In the Compulsory Medicine essay contest Duane Luallin won first, Jeanne Garvin second, and Wilbur Gay third. 90

READING CLOCKWISE: Seniors ranking in the highest 10 per cent of their class: Bea Bell, Josephine Boone, Doris Coulter, Nina Rose Bitner, .Tirn Price, Richard Hendrich, Evelyn Ackerman, Betty Ann Langhammer, Virginia Brown, Patrick Horner, Velma Johnson, Patty Russ, Betty Jane Creorge, and Linda Whitworth. Rita Harwell placed first in the Mechanical Drawing Contest held at Warrensburg. Duane Luallin was selected by the sophomore class to be their representative to attend the an- nual Sophomore Pilgrimage. Each year a Science Award is presented to a senior, who has excelled in the field of science, this a- ward was given to Patrick Horner. The Clinton High School was well represented at the State Music Contest. Those entered in the State Contest were Louise Swaney, fluteg Nina Rose Bitner, Sue Belton, and Virginia Ragland, voice: Bubby Wilson, tenor sax- ophone and clarinetg Doug Smith and Bill Harwell, trombone. 91
