1: ' ' 'him-dt-C I The idea of an area college had never been far from the minds of many Southwest Virginians. It was Fred B. Greear and Kenneth Asbury who made the first trip to Charlottesville to sell the University of Virginia on the idea of establishing the college. It is certain that any picture of Clinch Valley College in its earliest days must carry in its foreground the image of Colgate W. Darden, Jr., President of the University of Virginia, who had full knowledge of the needs of the state and a special feeling for the people of the 'Great Southwest'. . 1 ,gf gg-v'14' M5Yj.- .,1 V X I 1 Ms ,L ff-22.1 14-.f:f,,.-,'-ea aw A .ffgil mi?-H1 like l9'Lif?:fPZg, . fr Y 'x 'rte- lW ??f f, ' ' -' . . 4 '1,Qr-.r.v-1131! fat .fy . 1 Mu . .sfQQf'if.lQ!!2,i 1 4's.:'?23r fi 1, 7 '-:Q 'Q L - 4 5 A iff, ia. . ,ei . en. - wi ftgfefi f, :Q 'Wav-' .let -'- ll fri f- if F-- A' H- 4 an i - '-vfssv .ear rwfffi f. 4 QI ' 'f'f 7 i ' l '- -l' ' tjgx-Aa-5'fIV vu fi 1 -- L. -2 X , 7ZjS1...4'-- 2 J, ,:'f5:1 .'::'- '1' E-L' -- s '- f sf .t-.-, erm. .- H , ,-123. -, 1' .' -- 1 D 3 ir- - ii.-Qi-je-le? i.f,15r5TS.i2-it-5'5e'ii4 f:Efs' Pi' '-. After some legal maneuvers the county donated the poor farm to be used as a campus. The farm contained two native sandstone buildings and about 200 acres of land. The larger of the buildings housed a group of wayward women . In July of 1954 the last occupants of the poor farm were transferred to other facilities. This made way for the aca- demic campus of Clinch Valley. A miracle was accom- plished from that July day to September 15th when regis- tration and classes began. S., df' 4 Tr- wl N 5' l -v-, 49 . Rh ' ' if f ,ax The renovation of the buildings was not yet complete when 135 students gathered on the lawn outside the poor house building to hear Sam Crockett tell them, You are making history today. This new branch is the first such branch in the history of the University. Affine -F 'L 533 ng? tix . at 53' . Q I 1 '42,
