FO UNDA TIONS Many of our traditions were acquired from our parent insti- tution. Our foundations are grounded in the traditions and reputation of the University of Virginia. However, Clinch Valley College is unique and innovative in its own right. For example, Clinch Valley was established as Virginia's first community collegen almost ten years before, the inauguration of the state's present system. It was also the first state college in Virginia without a policy of racial exclusion and was the first to recruit actively among all races. 'J wi' L' . .XX -r f , f . ' ff-.1+.,' l..., Aside from those colleges which were founded as Black institutions, Clinch Valley was the first state college to be established in Virginia with a co-educational student body. It was one of the first state institutions to admit students on the basis of over-all merit, promise, attitude, and need, a humanis- tic view which has just recently been accepted by older and more presitigious colleges. Clinch Valley is dedicated to helping each student reach his potential. Creativity is an important part of a contemporary education. The faculty-student ratio and the environment of Clinch Valley contributes to the growth and creativity of the students. Clinch Valley has a faculty-student ratio that compares favorably with most other colleges. Students need not contend with large classes where they become lost in a mass of other students. The classes are small enough to allow discussions among the students and with the faculty. Students are encour- aged to share their ideas and opinions with one another and the faculty member.
