It was Fred B. Greear and Kenneth Asbury who made the first trip to Charlottesville to sell the University of Virginia on the idea of establishing the college. It is certain that any picture of Clinch Valley College in its earliest days must carry in its foreground the image of Colgate W. Darden, Jr., President of the University of Virginia, who had full knowledge of the needs of the state and a special feeling for the people of the 'Great Southwest'. . 1 ,gf gg-v'14' M5Yj.- .,1 V X I 1 Ms ,L ff-22.1 14-.f:f,,.-,'-ea aw A .ffgil mi?-H1 like l9'Lif?:fPZg, . fr Y 'x 'rte- lW ??f f, ' ' -' . . 4 '1,Qr-.r.v-1131! fat .fy . 1 Mu . .sfQQf'if.lQ!!2,i 1 4's.:'?23r fi 1, 7 '-:Q 'Q L - 4 5 A iff, ia. . ,ei . en. - wi ftgfefi f, :Q 'Wav-' .let -'- ll fri f- if F-- A' H- 4 an i - '-vfssv .ear rwfffi f. 4 QI ' 'f'f 7 i ' l '- -l' ' tjgx-Aa-5'fIV vu fi 1 -- L. -2 X , 7ZjS1...4'-- 2 J, ,:'f5:1 .'::'- '1' E-L' -- s '- f sf .t-.-, erm. .- H , ,-123. -, 1' .' -- 1 D 3 ir- - ii.-Qi-je-le? i.f,15r5TS.i2-it-5'5e'ii4 f:Efs' Pi' '-. After some legal maneuvers the county donated the poor farm to be used as a campus. The farm contained two native sandstone buildings and about 200 acres of land. The larger of the buildings housed a group of wayward women . In July of 1954 the last occupants of the poor farm were transferred to other facilities. This made way for the aca- demic campus of Clinch Valley. A miracle was accom- plished from that July day to September 15th when regis- tration and classes began. S., df' 4 Tr- wl N 5' l -v-, 49 . Our foundations are grounded in the traditions and reputation of the University of Virginia. However, Clinch Valley College is unique and innovative in its own right. For example, Clinch Valley was established as Virginia's first community collegen almost ten years before, the inauguration of the state's present system. It was also the first state college in Virginia without a policy of racial exclusion and was the first to recruit actively among all races. 'J wi' L' . .XX -r f , f . ' ff-.1+.,' l..., Aside from those colleges which were founded as Black institutions, Clinch Valley was the first state college to be established in Virginia with a co-educational student body. It was one of the first state institutions to admit students on the basis of over-all merit, promise, attitude, and need, a humanis- tic view which has just recently been accepted by older and more presitigious colleges. It was also among the first to have student representatives on standing committees and to open faculty meetings to student attendance. ir- -W f T57f1'...3'iJf'gf'i ' 1 1 r 'K N l . ,JU 'QV ps, .t 'lik 'LH it lf- ' ' YI li '--2.11-,FFT-' ,,,. , ' ' ,,,g,.,,..,.s...,-n---1 x Clinch Valley College was founded with these innovative ideas as part of its constitution. Creativity is an important part of a contemporary education. The faculty-student ratio and the environment of Clinch Valley contributes to the growth and creativity of the students. Clinch Valley has a faculty-student ratio that compares favorably with most other colleges. Students need not contend with large classes where they become lost in a mass of other students. The classes are small enough to allow discussions among the students and with the faculty. Students are encour- aged to share their ideas and opinions with one another and the faculty member. This freedom enhances creativity and aca- demic competition. AD VAN CES IN CREA TI VI TK l '43 i Us gi X rv! -FP v Y ,. Debbie I-Iammock's rendition of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer was a big success, as was the sing-a-long, and, of course, the Wassail. 108 The choir serves as an asset not only to the college, but to the community as well. Mr. Donathan conducted the community choir at the 1978 Commencement and again at the choir's performance of Handel's Messiah at the Norton Methodist Church in December. . Led by Michael Donathan, the college choir performed a number of concerts during 1978, including a Spring concert in Pound, Va., a Founder's Day concert at the college, and a Mother's Day concert at Clinch Valley Manor. In 1973, McCraray Hall became a co-ed dorm with the addition of a new wing. To help make campus life a little easier for the residents, McCraray Hall has two TV rooms, a game room, kitchen area, laundry room, and a study room. The dormitory houses approximately 215 students. One of the unfortunate events that the residents of McCraray will remember was the fire that oc- curred on Friday, October 27th. The fire, its origin uncertain, completely destroyed one room and caused damage to surrounding areas of the men's wing. l - xg FT3f5 ',T l'5'3'17 TEV, 'I T' 3'f'.'f' 'la E EWNQL cu-uv 9 H.:-n ' - QS C 1 2 ,,,,...--, an . It served this purpose for almost thirty years until Clinch Valley College was founded in 1954. Randolph Hall was ori- ginally used as a faculty office building and lounge. In the early sixties, with the expansion of the campus, it was used solely as a dormitory for women. It houses thirty-five women students. 188 'P.-- T l- ,Mi 1 N S X Ziff ff ff ' CR OCKE TT HALL Crockett Hall, named in honor of Samuel Crockett, a founder of Clinch Valley College, was used as the main building when Clinch Valley opened in 1954. As the college has expanded, Crockett has become the men's dorm. Built in the l920's, Crockett was most recently renovated during the summer of 1977. Currently housing thirty-five men, it is the only campus housing facility to host twenty-four hour open dorm. K I -.fi .,.
