Our first grade teacher, Mrs. Stein- hauer resigned after the first semes- ter. Mrs. Vincent Parker filled in the vacancy until Mrs. Fries was hired to finish the year. Paul Dicks was awarded the good Cit- izenship Award from the Iowa Bar Association.He is the third student from our school to receive this award, it was previously awarded to Mary Kobs in 1954 and Alma Haddock in 1953. Richard Schwanke, Monte Brinker, Paul Dicks,Phyllis Lohse, and Mary Schwarz went to the surrounding towns to sell advertisements for the annual. Warren Connor, who plays the oboe,and Joe Hess, who plays the baritone, are new members who were added to the band. Karen Smith and Phyllis Lohse helped .Mrs. Vandeventer with the accompani- ment work this year. Richard Schwanke was chosen by the basketball boys to receive the four year letter as captain of the squad, and Phyllis Lohse for girls basket- ball squad, and Monte Brinker for oaseball. They are 3 Jack Conner, a Freshmen from Movilleg Don Matney, a Sophomore from Sioux City Central, and Warren Conner, a Junior from Moville. On May 4,the students were entertain- ed by a circus consisting of a horse shoe exhibition, tumbling, motorcycle trick riding, and various dog acts. During the year we had assembly pro- grams every Friday morning. The pro- grams were alternated among the class- es. The presidents, of each class, with the help of Mrs. Vandeventer planned the programs.

The various classes have entertained the high school with parties during the year. The Sophomores sponsored a Freshmen Initiation Party at Whiting on Sept- ember 5. Before leaving for the roll- er rink, we had a weiner roast in the school yard. On October 22 the Seniors entertained with an evening of games and square dancing. The Juniors sponsored a square dance on December 2. The Sophomores sponsored the last school party on March 29. We went to Whiting for an evening of roller skating. Seniors from 17 schools came to Climb- ing Hill on April 4, to take part in Senior Career Day. The address was given by Dr. Ray Bryan, from Iowa State College at Ames. H The State Music Contest was held at Correctionville, April 14 and 15. Karen Smith, a Junior, won a I rating with her saxophone solos,WLe Secret', and 'La Caressn. On April 25, the band gave its first exhibition as a marching band. The band, led by La Donna Lee, marched down main street and back to the schoolhouse. We felt proud of our start as a marching band. Fifteen high school g1rls,accompan1ed by Mr. Reynolds,M1ss Meyer,Miss Down- ing, and Mr. Ronfeldt, went to Des Moines to the Girls State Basketball Tournament. The games were held in the new auditorium. We stayed over- night at the Kirkwood Hotel, and returned home on Sunday. Mgw ,,a,,,,- The Boys Quartette, composed of Don Fredinburg,Earl Haddock,Charles Hess, and Monte Brinker received a II rating at the State Music Contest, They sang 'My Lord what a Morning' and 'Ride In the Chariotn. A Student Council, composed of the Senior Class Officers, and two other elected Seniors, was started at the beginning of the school year. Train- ing rule violators and other problems that came up concerning the students were presented to the group for discussion, and the penalty or solu- tion to the problem resulted. During the second semester of this year, as s result of talks by the Iowa Safety Council, our high school organized a Teen-age Driver's Club.
