Daily improvement made the 1957-58 basket- ball season one to remember. The team breezed through 12 games with only one upset. Callands, the opponent, took this one in a three minute overtime. At the end of the season they were tied with Call- ands for first place. In the playoff the girls became triumphant and as a result were awarded the Dis t r i ct Q, Group III Championship, This was anhonor but the team knew there was a tough struggle ahead. In the first bout of the tournament Chatham offered a real fight, however, the squad sank another victory. This meant they would meet Callands, their toughest opponent, again . Due to the clear thinking and cool playing the team was again victorious. Yes, the squad was now Group III Champions, The fir st real trophy the girls had ever won is a beauty to say the least! Up to this point there had not been aheartbreaker, It was yet to come, The Group III Champions were scheduled to battle the Group II Champions for the County Championship. Jeannette Oakes, QManagerj, Adeline Blair, Donna Lee Blair, Je anne tte West, Peggy Morton, Dale Mahan, Becky Anderson, Miss Mary Ellen Hilton, QCoachj, BASKETBALL the girls fought to the finish. The final outcome was-to-be -in favor of the opponent. That terminated a spectacular season. Strong defensive play made the team what it was, These memories shall remain with the loyal fans and spirited squad, Yes, they have many things to remember. Becky Anderson and Jeannette West received All-Star Team Selection, Jeannette also had the honor of being third high scorer of the county. Miss Hylton, the C oach, was the real spark for the team, Her leadership, understanding, and wit pulled the squad through many tight games. The sportsmanship of the squad was excellent. Above all the team and their fans showed the best sportsmanship possible when they won or were defeated.
