(xLx ' k A (- ce_ In this, the fifth edition of The Eagle, we hove at- tempted to compilea book mainly upon the interests and activities of the students themselves. The main purpose of school, scholarship, is some- times forgotten; this book, in its own small way, gives special recognition to those students who have not for- gotten . E A G Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1955, dedicate with sincere esteem The Eagle of 1955 to Mrs. Mae Reynolds, whose unselfish and loyal devo- tion to the interest of the students, has contributed materially to the happy spirit that distinguishes our school. Mrs. Reynolds has taught for thirty-six years, twenty-seven of which have been at this school. She has started about one thousand students on their rcxid to education during her years at Climax. When former students of Climax think back on their happy school days, their first thoughtsare of here and her kindly patience and help- fulness to all. MR, WILLIAM WALTER HALLIGAN, JR. HISTORY OF CLASS OF 1955 We were freshmen, and a little hesitant to begin the long climb; the stairs to our goal seemed to tower far above us. This was our Stairway to the Stars. There were many friendly hands to help us; our principals, our faculty, parents, and friends encouraged us to set out. Before long we were used to the steepness of the stairs and were stopping off at landings for extra-curricular activities. Miss Phylis Layne was our sponsor; Glenn Shelton, president; Carl Thornton, vice-president; Sterling Camden, secretary; and Averette Osborne, treasurer. We had eighteen members on roll. With each step, we were gaining new friendships, knowledge, and assurance for the next four years. More self-confident and more knowing, we stepped into our sophomore year. Sterling Camden went to New York, but Alton DeBoe joined us to make us a class of eighteen. We elected Betty Lou Hammock, president; Shelby Jefferson, vice-president; Nancy Allen, secretary; Nancy Lee Watson treasurer . We seemed to fly up the stairs to our junior year, only pausing to look backward a moment at the progress we had made, before resuming our ascent. Our officers were Glenn Shelton, president; Carl Thornton , V i c e - p r e s i d e n t; Betty Lou Hammock, secretary; Shelby Jefferson, treasurer; Nancy Allen, reporter. Mrs. Larry Giles was sponsor until Christmas then Mrs. Guy Yeatts took over. We lost the following members of the junior class: Harley Edwards, James Ferguson, Shirley Kendrick, Lolene Mc- Crickard, Nell Watson and Thomas Yeatts. Sterling Camden came back to join us. Our memorable ex- periences as juniors were: Junior-Senior Banquet at the Country Club and our Swimming party at Betty Lou ' s. As we became Seniors we were impressed by the view of the final step toward our star. We considered the stairs we had traversed, and we thought soberly of the changes that had taken place in those timid freshmen. In the joys and disappointments of our high school life, in the firm friend- ships which bound us together, and in the wonderful memories that were ours, we had found a degree of iiiaturity. Our senior year was a busy one, with the selection of invitations, fitting of caps and gowns, senior play, junior-senior banquet, and finally graduation. On the last step, now, we turn our faces upward to the stars for which we have climbed. These stars will be ours as we enter colleges or vocations of our choice. Having climbed our Stairway to the Stars for four years, we pay sincere tribute to those who have helped us along the way to those persons and to those events of Climax that have inspired us toward our intergration of knowledge, character, charm, and integrity. Our sponsor, and officers that served so faithfully in this last year were president, Alton DeBoe; vice-president, Shelby Jefferson; sec- retary, Nancy Allen; Treasurer, Sterling Camden; reporter, Lorene Chism, and sponsor Mrs. Guy Yeatts. We chose as our motto, Today we launch, where shall we anchor? Our flower was the yellow rose, and our colors were yellow and green. BETTY LOU HAMMOCK SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1955, in thirteen individual and distinct parts, being of sound mind and in charitable mood, do make and publish this last will and testament We will and bequeath to the following individuals: First I, Nancy Allen, will to Peggy Barber my love for commercial work. No scene could have been lovelier tohuman eyes than the rolling acres of colorful azalea bushes. Drinking in the beauty of the flowers I realized graduation would soon be here and I still had the class prophecy to write. Having not the faintest idea what to write I dreamily touched a cluster of the fragrcnt blossoms. The blossoms began to speak saying, Trouble thyself no longer for we will carry you into a land where you will be hailed as a noble prophetess and will be given the power to foretell all things concerning your classmates. It was so misty in this strange land to which I had been carried, I couldn ' t see, but I could hear the magic notes of Moonlight Sonata that filled the air. Beethoven ' s message to his immortal lover was drowned by a voice in Washington. Suddenly all the mist cleared and 1 could see Alton DeBoe on the floor of the Senate. It ' s Hawaii and it ' s Nancy Allen singing Aloha . Nancy is teaching commercial and having herself a marvelous time with all the handsome men that come to the islands vacationing, includ- ing Charleton Heston. The notes of music were broken by the sound of a razor. Ralph Frazier is in the barber business and becoming very prosperous. I heard the squeaking oftires asa car stops in the driveway; It ' s Quitman Arthur hurrying home from work to see his wife, the former Miss Thelma Cassidy. Softly the organ is playing Lohengrin for Betty Lou Hammock to march down the aisle in her gown of white mousseline de soire, to marry the man she dreamed she would. Carl Thornton is giving a speech to the Climax Ruritans, of which he is president; Carl has a farm , but no wife . The good looking blonde hostess stepping off United Airlines and going to a blue Ford is Lorene Chism. Buford is still waiting while Lorene has a crush on the pilot. Averette Osborne is still playing hillbilly music and has a Saturday night barn dance. The beautiful place is Sweetbriar College where Glenn Shelton is teaching dancing to the soc iety snobs . It ' s Westover Field; the man on the microphone is saying, Eastern Airlines in and out every five minutes. The tall handsome pilot getting into his plane and taking off on the runway is Sterling Camden . Julian Ferguson is a stock car racer and wins every time. Nancy Lee Watson is a nurse in Paris, the city of love. She is having her youthful fling in the city, though she gets letters every day to return to this side of the Atlantic. Aided by the moonlight I could look upon the deck of a ship, where a lovely lady in a cham- pagne gown was dancing with a handsome man. The lady is Shelby Jefferson who is the ship ' s nurse; yes, it ' s the ship ' s doctor, whom Shelby will marry when they dock at New York. The notes of Moonlight Sonata awaked me and to my surprise I wasstill in Wilmington and the music was floating through the air from the club. AciUutie4 There are many ways in which young people may be educated to become good citizens. Our school may be the smallest in the county but Climax students have done well in county, district, and state competition; which shows that Climax students are good and the school is strong. Miss Betty Riddle, of the class of 1954, received first place in the state of Virginia Wildlife Essay Contest. Betty received a $50 check, a 200 year old Aztec Indian bracelet and atrip to Richmond for her and her mother. Betty is shown receiving her prize from Governor Stanley. Horace Towler won a $75 savings bond for second place in the Danville Junior Tobacco Show and Sales Con- test. He also won third prize in the State Junior Tobacco Show and Sales Contest. He was presented his prizes by Mr. J.F. Blair, countyagent. Carl Thornton accomplishments have been so many that we can hardly list them all here. Under the guidance of Mr. Dunnavant, he has been a leader in the F.F.A. activities. He receiveda medal forCounty Public Speaking Contest for 1955. He served as Presidentand Vice-President of the Pittsylvania County Federation of the F.F.A. and represented the county at the National F.F.A. Con- vention in Kansas City. Shelby Jean Jefferson was elected from Climax as secretary to the Beta Club County Federation and reporter to the FHA District Federation. lilllLJU ■ 1 1 ■ ' t ' 1 ITT Seated: Dale Mahan, Alice Faye Bennett, Gordon Ray Blair, Becky Anderson, Reporter; Betty Lou Hammock, Shelby Jefferson, President; Alice Faye McGhee, Dee Anna Cundiff, Sec retary -Treasurer; Danese Wood. After Cl max 69 Renan 80 Christmas the trouble started when Lorene had a knee injury which Cl max 83 Spring Garden 96 kept her out of our two hardest games. Soon as Lorene got well. Dee Cl max 62 Chatham 50 Anna Cundiff and Jo Ann Jefferson got yellow jaundice and couldn ' t Cl max 56 Brosville 64 play for the rest of the season. Cl max 56 Cal lands 68 But the game of the year was on Feb. 5th, against Spring Garden. Cl max 41 Renan 51 There were only four of our first string playing, but Climax still won Cl max 58 Spring Garden 57 over the second place team of the county.
