Class Mist or y We have been here at Climax High for four years trudging along, acquiring the fundamentals of education and the art of living with ourselves and with one another. It hasn’t been bad because we have had happy and gay times together. We have obeyed with meekness and humility the rules and regulations of our school. All worthwhile things are gained by a price. We have paid that price as we have written our history through the years. We entered the eighth grade with twenty-eight on roll. Mr. George Gibbs was our sponsor and Mr. Fred Reynolds was principal. In February, W. G. Finney enrolled in our class. Our class officers were: President — Melvin Blair, Vice-President — Jean Craddock, Secretary-Treasurer — Sylvia Terrill, and Reporter — Jimmy Rasberry. This was a year of getting ad- justed because we were the first eighth grade at Climax. The event we enjoyed most this year was our picnic. We got a half day holiday for this. In the ninth grade, Mrs. Elsie Blair was our sponsor and Mr. Reynolds was still our principal. We elected the following officers: President — Betty Jane Riddle, Vice-President — Randall Moore, Secretary-Treasurer — James Rogers Adkins, and Reporter — Carroll McCrickard. During the year, we gained Oralle Adkins and Douglas Pennington. We lost Morris Kendrick, Jimmy Rasberry, Bobby Adkins, Janice Chism, Sylvia Terrill, Geraldine Kendrick, and Sallie Belle Towler. Sallie came back before the year was over. This year, the clubs were open to us. We joined the Student Council, F.F.A., F.H.A., and the Beta Club. This was the first Student Council in Climax High. Many of us made the basketball teams. Again this year we took off a half day from school for our picnic. When we entered the tenth grade, several members of our class had dropped out. These were Douglas Pennington, Oralle Adkins, James Fer- guson, Julian Ferguson, Garnett Osborne, Ruby Wallace, and Frances Shel- ton. We gained Betty Sue Hodges. Mrs. Blair was our sponsor and Mr. Reynolds our principal. Our officers were: President — Shirley Shelton, Vice-President — W. G. Finney, Secretary-Treasurer — Tommy Law, Reporter —Louise Crews. This year our boys won the Group III County Basketball Championship. The F.H.A. gave the champions a banquet. We gave the seniors a banquet at the Danville Country Club. Our class had a picnic after school and went to the movie. We had cheerleaders for the first time this year. In the eleventh grade, we had Mrs. Blair as sponsor and Mr. Reynolds as principal. We lost Gladys Adkins and gained Dolores Martin and Nelson Gibson. The main event of this year was getting our class rings. Our class had a party at school. Our officers for this year were: President — Sallie Towler, Vice-President — Melvin Blair, Secretary-Treasurer — Barbara Has- kins, and Reporter — Tommy Law. Finally, we were seniors. The road that had seemed so endless was now coming to an end. We lost two members of our class, Sallie Towler and Shirley Shelton. Mrs. Blair was our sponsor. We had a new principal, Mr. W. W. Halligan, Jr. Our officers were: President — Patsy Ann Watson, Vice-President — Betty Jane Riddle, Secretary-Treasurer — Melvin Blair, and Reporter — Dolores Martin. We were all very excited about our invitations, caps, and gowns. Our biggest events were our annual, junior-senior ban- quet, and senior play. We chose as our motto: “Life Is A Picture, Paint It Well.” Our colors were blue and white and our flower, red rose. We shall always cherish the memories of the days we spent at Climax. Class Prophecy On the evening of June 11, 1964, my mind was in a daze remembering June 11, 1954, when I had received my high school diploma. My mind had left Beverly Hills, California, where I was Esther Williams’ secretary, to Climax, Virginia, and those dear old classmates. I knew I must stop dream- ing and get into the house and get dressed to attend the premiere with Esther of her new movie, “Queen of the waters.” As we greeted friends, I still remained in my daze of remembering “school days at Climax. “ The usher led us to our seats as I was dreaming the role each of my classmates was playing in life. Then my ears heard familiar voices and on the screen my eyes saw; Patsy Ann Watson has resigned her position as secretary to become a happy housewife. Randall Moore has settled down with a family and has a steady job. Barbara Haskins is working as a telephone operator and still looking for a man. W. G. Finney, through with college, is preaching the Bible. Ten years have passed and Tommy Law is still knocking clods and fussing about tobacco. Melvin Blair is flying a jet plane over Flip and his dairy farm. James Rogers Adkins is flying a jet plane in the U. S. Air Force. Betty Sue Hodges broke the record by being the first girl to enter Washington and Lee University Law School. After several years of success- ful practice of law she was elected Governor of Virginia. She is expected to appoint former classmates to high positions in the state. Betty Jane Riddle is married and trying to keep up with all the society clubs in the community. Doris Barbour is trying to keep Junior from crying while her husband is preaching. Dolores Martin is still single and working every day at her position as secretary at Washington, D. C. Nelson Gibson is running a dairy farm in the winter and playing short- stop for the Cleveland Indians in the summer. Iris Mahan is a nurse at an Army Hospital, and doing one certain captain some good. Louise Crews has stopped nursing at Walter Reed Hospital to set up housekeeping near Climax. Carroll McCrickard has been driving a school bus to Climax for the last ten years. He no longer has to skip school to take the bus to the shop. Jean Craddock is one of the head Democrats in Virginia and is teaching political history at Washington and Lee University. She is beginning to shape up her campaign for the U. S. Senate race in July. C. D. Cook is running against her on the Republican ticket. Jane Watson is Esther Williams’ secretary and living in lovely Beverly Hills, California. Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1954, in seventeen individual and distinct parts, being of sound mind and in a charitable mood, do make and publish this last will and testament — We will and bequeath to the following individuals: First, James Rogers Adkins wills his fine hillbilly voice to Julian Fer- gerson so he can take his place in Glee Club next year. Doris Barbour wills her seat in Mrs. George Blair’s room to Lolene McCrickard. Melvin Blair wills his position of center forward in basketball and center field in baseball to Abe Osborne. Norma Jean Craddock wills her studious ways to Betty Lou Hammock. Louise Crews wills Alton DeBoe her love for Glee Club. W. G. Finney wills his last year at Climax to Harley Edwards. Nelson Gibson wills his good disposition to Carl Thornton. Barbara Haskins wills her love for basketball to Lorene Chism. Betty Sue Hodges wills her ability to misbehave on the bus to Shelby Jefferson. Tommy Law wills his position as guard on the basketball team and second base position on the baseball team to Glenn Shelton. Iris Mahan wills her love for History to Sterling Camden. Dolores Martin wills her friendly ways to Shirley Kendrick. Carroll McCrickard wills his ability to work in the shop to Ralph Frazier. Randall Moore wills his “pitening arm” to Thomas Yeatts. Betty Jane Riddle wills her position in basketball to Thelma Cassidy. Jane Watson wills her ability to get along with everyone to Nancy Allen. Patsy Ann Watson wills Nancy Lee Watson her love for Climax. In witness whereof, we, the Senior Class of 1954, approve of these be- quests and do set our seal and hands to this official document on the twelfth day of June.
