OUR PLANET - Halley’s Comet made its long-awaited return to our solar system in the fall of 1985 after having last appeared in the year 1910. Known as a short-period comet. Halley appears every 75 to 76 years. The famous comet was named after the noted astronomer Edmund Halley who used principals developed by his friend Isaac Newton to calculate its route and schedule. A virtual army of over 900 astronomers from through-out the world eagerly awaited Halley’s return. Using data and equipment unavailable during the comet’s last visit, they hoped to test and correct theories on the role comets have had on the origin of the cosmos. Five unmanned space-craft were scheduled to meet Halley during its closest approach to Earth. CLIFTON MORENCI - A ruling by the National Labor Relations Board on Feb. 19. 1986 upheld the results of an October 1984 election in which non-union Phelps Dodge workers voted to decertify cooper unions which had represented workers at the Morenci mining facility. The NLRB decision brought a legal end to the 32-month-old strike. CAPE CANAVERAL FLA. -Seven members of the space shuttle Challenger lost their lives early on the morning of Tuesday.
