I FOREWORD Time deters our pmands us all! It is she who unwittingly fulfills or Is whether they he large or small. Ruthlessly sfcg goes on; hesitating for no being; and letting nothing sway her tfrp constant nrlw If i tUl happy hours of hard w$xk and absorbing pastimes pass remain only in one’s memory. Alas, time can dim even memory unless there is a memento to preserve the deeds and accomplishment s of past days and keep them fresh in our memories. Hence it is our hope that within these pa s the reader will find time bound in familiar faces, events, and i imes. Thus times do shift-each thing his turn does hold; new things succeed, as former things grow old. 2 OUR TIME LS ALL-DAY, TODAY ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION H. C. McCuliar, President; O. B. A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE, AND A TIME TO SPEAK — 7 — SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Perhaps few in the graduating class of 1955 remember the kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Ruth Reeves, who first met us as we entered the Clifton Schools in September of 1942. The grade teachers who guided the class of ’55 throughout grammar school grades are as follows: lst-Miss Gwendolyn Cupps, Miss Helen Sieber; 2nd-Miss Helen Sieber, Mrs. Amy Cislaghi, Miss Elizabeth Shannon; 3rd-Mrs. Cota Crozier, Miss Nancy Norton, Miss Helen Carter; 4th-Miss Esther Gile, Mrs. Louise Null, Mr. Albert Alvarado; 5th grade-Mrs. Mary PoulaLion, Mrs. Carl Kinsey; 6th grade-Mrs. Isobel Maslar, Mr. Michael Metyk; 7tb-Miss Eugenia Tadlock and Mr. Stirlen Hedger. Through the portals of CHS came, in 1949, seventy-four frightened eighth graders. As one combined class we elected class officers for the first time. That year our most important event was graduation. May 24, 1950. Our sponsors were Mrs. Joyce Sims and Miss Carol Lauer. As freshmen, we began the year with great enthusiasm. On the second Friday of school, we were initiated and were guests at the Freshman Welcome Dance. We, in turn, gave the Freshman Return Dance. Class officers that year were Irene Torres, president; Shirley Preston, vice-president; Olivia Chavez, secretary; and Manuel Hernandez, treas. Our sophomore class officers were Mary Guevara, president; Mary Helen Ochoa, vice-president; Dan Cislaghi, secretary; and Manuel Hernandez, treasurer. Under these officers’ guidance we sponsored the freshman initiation and Freshman Welcome Dance. In January of our junior year, we ordered our class rings and soon after began preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom held in May. The Prom theme was Hawaii.” Some of us also were in the junior-senior play, Here Comes Charlie.” That year’s class officers were Mary Lou Jaquez, president; Don Ross, vice-president; Corinne Baca, secretary; and Mary Helen Ochoa, treasurer. During our senior year the class participated extensively in all activities from September to May Graduation. Elected as officers were Herman Sanchez, president; Eddie Castaneda, vice-president; Mary Lou Jaquez, secretary; and Reynie Norte, treasurer. On October 31, we attended Senior Day at the University of Arizona. Eight of us participated in the junior-senior play, The Inner Willy.” In January we ordered our graduation cards and announcements; in April we held the junior-senior banquet using April In Paris” as our theme. Finally came the climax to thirteen years of hard work and play. Baccalaureate exercises were held on May 22; with commencement on May 27, thirty-three new personalities began their journey in life. Ready to help at any time during the past four years were Mrs. Joyce Sims and Mr. Victor Meneley, our class sponsors. Our first exciting moment was the ordering of our class rings early in October. Next we sponsored the annual pep-rally and sold refreshments for the Clifton-Superior football game to boost the funds in our treasury. The highlight of the year came with the Junior-Senior Prom held on April 16 1955. The class participated actively in many of the high school activities including the yearbook, school pa per and band. Freshman Initiation Day, a very important event to these fledglings, took place on September 10. The cheerfulness of the year was marred by the sudden death of a fellow classmate, Johnny Garza. His friendship will remain a treasured memory to the class of 1958. Mrs. Stella Cosper and Mr. George Childs, our class sponsors, have been most helpful in guiding these new members of the Clifton High School student body. — 28 — STUDENT SNAPS 2 ) — After lunch reunion Good oP friends Friends ?! C.H.S. council members and sponsors attended the district meeting held by the Eastern Arizona Association of Student Councils. The student s took part in the different discussion groups and learned many useful ideas concerning the functions of student government. Another project of the year was the Student Council Store located in the principal’s old office. The members of the Student Council took turns selling pencils, paper, and other school necessities to students. COUNCIL MEMBERS Left to right. The eighteen members belonging to this club are book or magazine librarians. The book librarians follow rules in the care of all books checked in and out. The magazine librarians check magazines and newspapers during the last part of the study hall periods. During November the Club presented a Thanksgiving assembly. Members of different school organizations gave reasons why they were thtnkful. The club members did a choral reading from Stephen Vincent Benet. One of their most enjoyable events was the Christmas Tea Party held for the faculty. At this party, the faculty and members exchanged gifts, sang, ate, and participated in a Christmas program. Each year the Book Boosters hold picnics during the fall and spring. — 49 CLIFTON HIGH SCHOOL BAND The 60-piece Trojan marching band, under the direction of Mr. H. W. Sherod, has found the year 1954-55 a most successful one. How proud the band members felt as they performed in their new band uniforms throughout On October 31, 1954 the band attended Band Day at the University of Arizona and participated in a marching show, receiving a rating of excellent for its performance. Before more than 1800 senior high school students, the members of our band performed with 32 other bands during the half-time of a University of Arizona football game. Although the Trojans lost their first three games, they came back to win their last six games of the season. The team placed three men on all-conference first string: Earl (Randy) Randolph, Raul Naf-arrate, and Eddie Castaneda. Hipolito Barriga, Junior Lopez, and Reynie Norte made the second string, all-conference. Earl Randolph also made the Tucson Daily all-state first team and made the Arizona Republic second team. VOLLEYBALL CHS’ Volleyball team won their first game in three years during the 1954 season. They won a total of three games during the season showing marked improvement over previous years. Uith a sixteen game winning streak, the Trojans lost their only game of the season to Eloy by a score of 66-70. The Trojans finished the season with an impressive record of 18 wins and 1 defeat. Meeting Eloy again in the district tournament finals, the Trojans revenged their earlier defeat by trapping the Dust Devils 63 to 40. Two of our boys made the All-tournament team: Randy made the first team and Raul Nafarrate made the second team. Raul, chosen the most valuable player of the tournament, received a beautiful trophy. Coach Taylor’s boys then went to the state tournament in Flagstaff where they fought their way to the top as Class B” State Champions. Meeting Eloy again in the finals, the Trojans defeated the Dust Devils by a score of 57 to 47. The Trojans placed two boys on the All-State first team—Raul Nafarrate and Earl Randolph. The Trojan basketball team was later presented with a banquet given by the Clifton Boosters. A ’’key to the city” was presented to this winning team upon their arrival to Clifton.
