CARMEN BAILON SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Graduation day had finally arrived for the class of ’52. Time now to look back over the past four years—four years of fun and friendship, but most important, four years of learning. To think that it all began when 66 bewildered and frightened freshmen entered the halls of C.H.S. After the dreaded initiation, a class picnic, and the freshman return dance, the class officers of that year—Manuel Perea, president; Henry Tavison, vice-president; Cecilia Chavez, secretary; and Fred Montez, treasurer—closed an exciting grade. In no time at all, our sophomore year had ended. We had sponsored the freshman initiation and freshman welcome dance. Our class, the first sophomore class to sell at a football game, won recognition in the Trojan staff’s “Big Show”. The year, closed by the class picnic, was managed and led by the following officers— Charles Spezia, president; Melsina Scott, vice-president; Cecilia Chavez, secretary; and Richard McCusker, treasurer. Recognized as taking a prominent part in school affairs, our junior year was highlighted by the Senior Ball, the class picnic, and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Adolfo Perez—presi- dent, Richard McCusker-vice-president, Melsina Scott-secretary, and Johnny Rutherford—treasurer were class officers for that year. As seniors we graduated with a record of tremendous accomp lishment. Besides the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, the Senior Ball, and selling at games, the highlights of the year mainly centered around Senior Day at Tucson, and, of course, “ditch day” held on May 9th. Sponsors: Mrs. Luevanos and Mr. Loughran. Upper left: Shirley Roberts, Helen Na- farrate, Mel Scott, Sis Gilliland, Cecilia Lopez, Pat Roybal, and Lupe Murillo as “champs” after the surprise winning of the district trophy at Duncan. Right: Mel Scott as winner of the school oratorical contest on the Constitution of the United States. Class officers: Josephine Manuz, Gilbert Baron, Betty Carolyn Walker, and Vera Saenz. Leaders of tomorrow: SENIORS OF '53 Another year has come and gone. The junior class—headed by Vera Saenz, president; Jos phine Manuz, vice-president; Betty Carolyn Walker, secretary; and Gilbert Baron, treasurer-has taken another step higher, not only in school activities and functions, but also toward their graduation day. Sponsors of the annual junior-senior prom, they have proudly taken their place as tomorrow’s seniors, leaders of the school. Class sponsors: Mrs. Cosper and Mr. Elliott. The class gave the school’s student body two pep assemblies and represented itself in several C.H.S. organizations. A picnic, early in the fall, and the graduation, held May 22 in the audi- torium, were the notable events of the year. Class officers, elected in the first semester were Ernie Montez—president, Ken- neth Mullins—vice-president, and Minnie Rivas—secretary-treasurer. Nature, the divine design, and ma- jestic beauty of those gallant mountains are put on the market by the Greenlee (xmnty Chamber of Commerce, and sold to that very important source of county profit, tourist trade . This year the C.H.S. Band, under the direction of Mr. Elliott, gave a concert in December for the purpose of helping finance their trip to the Salad Bowl, and gave a pre-festival concert in April. They played at special city gatherings and at school pep assemblies. That patriotic music 'heard at the football games was our proud band—giving inspiration and zest not only to the crowd but also to our team. Members attended several clinics and this year made a number of out-of-town trips to hear and see classical music performances. First row. left to right: Irene 'I orres. Olivia Chavez. Gridiron Starting Lineup The 1951-52 football season began with a team of eight men who lettered the year before. These eight men were the foundation of the squad that coaches McGuire and McAlpine spent the season trying to develop. Showing fre- quent individual brilliance, the team emerged champions in the district basketball meet to become the first district champs of basketball from C.H.S. On February 27, 28, 29, and March 1, the annual class “B” high school tournament was held at Flagstaff. There the Trojans lost their first-round game to a “scrappy” Winslow team. The following day they bounced back with a win over Scottsdale, only to be eliminated bv the Douglas Bulldog team, a team which had been previously defeated by C.H.S. As C.H.S. princess on this exciting day, she' rode in the down-town parade and proudly represented Clifton High and Clifton at the climax of the day’s activities—the Salad Bowl Game. Page 73 THE SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS All three cheerleaders—Carolyn Gilliland, Mclsina Scott, and Betty Boling (shown above in that order)—were seniors this year. New at this important task they were largely responsible for any marked increase in school spirit during the past year. They usually accompanied the team on out-of-town trips, and were loyal to all sports groups. The most popular of all C.H.S. yells is the old favorite. ‘'Te am , where one group, yelling MT-E tries to out-yell the other group, yelling “A-M . The yell ends with both groups yell- ing: Team, Team, Team! Alice de Leon, Epimenia Verdugo, Johnny Rutherford. Charles Spezia, and Bennie Dunsworth during the performance of the Christmas story, “Silent Night”. i C H. S. On the Air This year the dramatics class under Mr. Meneley’s guidance presented several comedies, mysteries, and dramatic performances over radio station K.C.L.T. as part of their activities for the school year. Even music and sound effects were handled by the members of the class. 4 Valuable and practical ex- perience was gained in fun. GIRLS' LEAGUE The Girls’ Leauge objective is to increase the participation of senior high school girls in ac- tivities. and to teach them to enjoy school opportunities offered in leisure hours. The League concluded a successful year which was highlighted by the annual Girls League Ball, held on Decemljer I, 1951. in the high school auditorium to the theme: Room Full of Roses”. Cecilia Gomez led the League as president. Vera Saenz was vice-president. Mars Ellen Forres was secretary, and Rel ecca Rivas was treasurer. Sponsors for the year were Mrs. Stella Gosper and Miss Minnie Meyer. THE STUDENT COUNCIL The Associated Student Council of Clifton High School was one of the most active organiza- tions in the school. Organized for the purpose of maintaining the principles of government in C.H.S. in matters pertaining to students, it also upholds school spirit and promotes a better attitude of co-operation among school organizations. Almost all of the accomplishments of the Council will greatly benefit C.H.S. now and in the future. The Council set up a student-activity ticket, after much statistical work, and com- piled a hand-book, especially valuable to new school members. Council representatives and officers attended the district student council meets in Safford and Morenci. Miss Minnie Meyer was their sponsor.
