Shall stand! And faces I shall never see, And lives that I can never guess, Shall be faithful or false because of me, Shall curse the world or bless. Think! I! So frail and weak and small, This deathless power am given That by word or deed a host may fall Or a legion be raised to Heaven. Anonymous Rendal W. Ham T905 1960 Rendal VV. l-lam, head ol the science department, lives in the minds ol his students. Through his integrity, ability, and sense ot duty, he won the admiration ot all. The greatest possible monument to his memory is yet to come, lor it will be in the achievements ot his former students. Therefore, with profound sincerity and respect, the senior class ot T960 wishes to dedicate this issue of the Columns to the memory of Rendal VV, I-lam. NN K gf QW. EDUCATION IN ACTION Clifton High School otters its students a wide variety of courses. The general, secretarial, business, and college preparatory programs are planned to aid the student and to prepare him for the future. A large faculty and numerous subjects enable the stu- dent to be quite selective in choosing his classes. Any problems which arise regarding these choices or other matters during the school year are handled by the guidance staft. Their helpful advice is available to students and parents alike. A C.H.S. day opens with the Flag Salute, this one is led by Coach Grecco. L 4 ,spsvnr-L l I If .Iohn is five years older than Mary and Henry is two years older than - -, ponders Carol Braverman. Although a large enrollment poses many educational problems, Clifton High School is ever cognizant of the requirements of the student body, One recent response to present-day needs may be seen in the initiation of honors courses in English, history, mathematics, and science, Spe- cial attention to health care, courses in creative writing and driver education, the addition of Russian to the for- eign language department, all show the keen desire of the administration to meet the challenge of changing times, An efficient proctor supervises corridor traffic. leg Polyak 'S busy on lhe day 'he Hlgh Way -Ssi -Q ssjss 2 X Y NSN! -M ff' . New groups are constantly being formed with the approval of the Student Council. In any school, scholarship is of prime importance, and the large membership of the National Honor Society shows that Clifton students understand this. Service organizations, such as the A.V.A., the proctors, class representatives, the Student Council, give much time and effort to helping in the smooth operation of the school. Publi- cations such as the High-Way and the Columns record school activities. There are language clubs, hobby groups, subject matter and career activities to appeal to every interest. The Mustang Band, Orchestra, and the many choral groups provide on outlet for musical talent. An active parent-teacher-student organization assures good relations between home and school. lt is apparent that school clubs give opportunities for self- expression to those whose interests reach beyond the class- room. Many students have chosen careers by using school activ- ities as a yardstick to measure their interests and abilities. la'-9 E uf' it ' '43 ,, if HIGH-WAY pl. STUDENT COUNCIL Perhaps the most prominent organization in Clifton High School is the Student Council, headed this year by Peter Kuiken, with Tony Pierce, Vice-president, Joyce Elbeck, Treasurer, Caro- lyn Cannata, Recording Secretary, and Priscilla Zanetti, Cor- responding Secretary, Students who had registered previously were eligible to cast ballots in the Student Council elections. This system is to encourage an electorate which considers voting a privilege. The primary purpose of the Student Council is to promote a close relationship between students and faculty. Several school improvements and solutions to many student problems have come from the suggestion box in Room ll2. Student Council Otticers confer. Priscilla Zanetti, Corresponding secretary, Tony Pierce, Vice-president, Joyce Elbeclr, Treas- urer, Peter Kuiken, President, Carolyn Can- nata, Recording Secretary. The Council also sponsors bus transportation to away games, dances, bonfires, and assemblies throughout the year. A handbook issued each September acquaints new students with the workings ofthe school. A highlight this year was the student-faculty production of Arsenic and Old lace. The enthusiasm of the Student Council Sponsors, Mrs. Marilyn Van Hassel and Miss Ruth Van Dillen, and the active support of the entire student body, are important contributing factors to its success. The Student Council fills an important position as general co-ordinator of most extra-curricular activities. fx :N ex . g L fr, ' Y f X, f aux 'Vigil -, N mmf! This organization encourages parents to give understanding and support to their children in school work and extra-curricular activities. The faculty also try to foster cooperation between home and school for the mutual understanding of the students' hopes and ambitions. An opportunity for students to discuss matters concerning the school with their parents and teachers is also offered to students. l.l.S,H. Many activities such as Parents Nights and Service Night are sponsored iointly by the P.T.S.A. and the Guidance Department. An addition to P.T.S.A. activities this year is a Newsletter Extra, which is to be mailed to members and all parents annual- ly. The Mustang Marching Band directed by Saul Kay, assisted by James Moscati, consists of 80 bandsmen, l6 maiorettes, 6 color guards, 2 banner carriers, a drum maiorette, and 20 alternates. During the year, this marching contingent participates in many community activities such as parades and Midget League programs. At football games, the band keeps school spirit high by pre-game and half-time performances. ln May, the entire group visits the nation's capi- tal, Washington, D. C. This fine marching band has received recog- nition and honors from many groups and organ- izations. This year Mercury Recording Com- pany selected the Mustang Band to appear on the cover of one of its forthcoming band rec- U- ii MUSIC ord albums. Also, the Band Masters' National Conference has selected the Clifton band to appear in its yearbook, First Chair of America, an honor given to only 200 school bands in the United States. After the football season, the band, playing as the Mustang Symphonic Band, participates in several concerts and also in the Spring Jam- boree. Another music group, the Clifton High School Orchestra, consists of nearly 50 members. Under the direction of Mr. Kay, the orchestra plays at several concerts during the year. This year, l8 bandsmen were chosen mem- bers of Region l, All-State Band. Eight members of the orchestra were named tc the All-State Orchestra. This number is indeed outstanding. They have done much to make our assemblies more interesting, and they have also given special pro- grams and concerts. A highlight of the season comes at Yule time with the production of the annual Christmas Concert. They also perform at the Thanksgiving and Easter assemblies. All groups combine to make the Spring Con- cert the highlight of the year. Graduation and Class Day exercises would not be complete without the musical offer- ings of the chorus. These seemed to be the questions asked by Clifton's opponents when Wayne Demikoti let go with his reverses and double reverses this season. Proving lo be one of the finest teams ever assembled at Clifton High, the Mustangs gained for their school the title of i959 New Jersey State Champion High School Football Team, displaying a superb record of nine wins and no defeats. The Mustangs with an impenetrable offensive team won their first two games against Central and Passaic without any diffi- culty. Still proving strong, the Mustangs defeated Bloomfield, Lyndhurst, and Eastside. Triumphs over East Rutherford and Nutley followed. Most gratifying of all was the victory over Montclair for the third successive year. ln this game, superb playing was the keynote. The Clifton eleven crossed the goal ' A mcg? 'tregg,gqsjg:l-.ffswzl yr!! line time and time again to achieve an all-time high score against Montclair. The traditional Thanksgiving Day game against Gar- field brought our undefeated season to a proud close. It would be exceedingly difficult to single out the most spec- tacular play or to give praise to a single player. The Mustangs practiced as a group, worked as a group, played as a group, and won as a group. Honorable mention is in order for Wayne Demikoff, Robert Papa, Donald Grilli, and Douglas Weicze- kowski all of whom have been elected to the i959 All State football team. The students of Clifton High School have good reason to be proud of their fighting Mustangs, the New Jersey State Cham- plans. .f. ,Cf 5... ff l76 ON THE - GRIDIRON N... um.. DIAMOND DUST Coach Ed Sanicki's Mustang nine had a good season with a record of thirteen wins in twenty games. The maior problem of pitching was remedied by the devel- opment of Thurman Skip Van Riper, Wayne Demikoff, and Vince Lupinacci. The Mustangs also benefited from the power hitting of Gerry Manning, Don Reuther, and Wayne Demikoff. The season started well, as the team won their first four games. Two of these were shutouts against Kearny and Eastside. Highlights during the season were thrilling one-run victories over Garfield, 6-5, and Passaic, 4-3. ln these and other games, the team worked as a well-molded unit. John Ferguson, Cliff Ruth, Harry DeMuth, Frank leach, and John Scancarella all played well. The Mustangs finished their season in the Greater Newark Tournament, losing to Bayonne I7-l2, after having beaten Montclair in an exciting game, 5-4. C I N D E R Fx..-. . , PATH S , 'lifts A The year 1959 produced one of the best track teams in re- 4 ' cent years at Clifton High. The Mustang cindermen coached by Jimmy Grimes, and led by Grant Erbach, George Soder, Jerry Ranges, and Bob Rabkin, posted a fine record of seven wins against two defeats, finishing second only to Paterson Eastside in the Passaic Valley Conference. The team opened the season by winning six of seven running events in posting a victory over Nutley. A triumph over Pope Pius followed. The Mustangs then suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Fair Lawn. Inspired, however, by Grant Erbach's brilliant performances in the one-hundred and two-hundred-twenty yard dashes, the team racked up easy vic- tories over Lyndhurst, Passaic, and Rutherford. A loss to a strong Eastside team was matched by the defeat of Central by the unbelievable score of 83-3. A victory over Garfield brought the season to a successful conclusion. With this spirited cry the Clifton High School Varsity Cheerleaders proudly marched onto the football field to open the l959-l 960 sports schedule. Mortimer, the team mascot, faithfully pranced alongside the girls at all the games. The rainy season that followed did not dampen his enthusiasm -or the cheerleaders' liveliness. jAlthough after the games the girls did have to cope with straight hair as well as sore muscles, stiff necks, and aching feet.j However, new uniforms and cor- sages at the Thanksgiving Day game helped to boost the squad's morale, while Mortimer literally kicked up his hoofs as he watched our victorious team come out of this final game as State Champions! With the beginning of basketball season, the Varsity cheer- leaders continued their fine work. Moreover, the Junior Varsity cheerleaders were now ready, after months of practice, to begin cheering at the preliminary matches. Both squads kept rehearsing old and new cheers under the guidance of the sponsors, Miss June Brickman and Miss Joyce Arlook. The captain of this year's squad, Ruth Ashmanskas, feels one of the major qualifications of a cheerleader is to have a big mouth. But the judges in the final try-outs last spring also watched carefully for the proper hand motions, jumps, grace- fulness, and pleasant appearance. Months of diligent practicing, the tense, nerve-wracking final moments of the try-outs, all seemed to be cast into the background as each member of the squad realized she had achieved her goal-the honor of being a Clifton High School Varsity Cheerleader!
