Recollections crowd in' of fun-filled, care-free hours spent with our acquaintances, of long, tedious, but mean- ingful hours spent in study and in classrooms, and finally of those most impressive moments spent marching to the tune of Pomp and Circumstancef' The freshmen of i953 walked through the first door of high school when they entered the doors of the High School Annex. Here was spent a year filled with anxiety and apprehension. Many obstacles were to be overcome -growing up, new acquaintances, new subiects, and a variety of special events. We felt like mass safe-crackers at times as we enthusi- astically opened our new-fangled combination locks to get the books that gave us our first smattering of for- eign languages, algebra, typing, and science. And who can forget the talent show, that tiip to the ballet in New York, the Annex's girls' victory over the Senior High soft- ball team, and Jackie Moyer's being named the Posture Queen ? The next doors we approached, those of that mighty fortress of learning, the Senior High School, welcomed us as sophomores. Perhaps the welcome was a little strange at times as we sought non-existant elevators to which seniors had sold us passes, or as we wandered dazedly through a maze of stairways, halls, and rooms. Neverthe- less, we began to have a realization of class solidarity as Miss Doris Connelly, Miss Gladys Akillian, Mr. Francis Hopkins, Mr. Charles Jackson, and Miss Mary Richardson were appointed our class sponsors. After a vigorous campaign, we elected Bill Baumann as presi- dent, Al Giannone, vice-president, Harriet Jezierski, sec- retary, and Mike Albanese, treasurer. lt was with a sense of belonging that we walked up the front steps and opened the doors to still another year at Clifton High School. Despite somewhat crowded condi- tions-and music-filled lunch periods-we managed to make more friends and learn our lessons too. We remember that snowy week-end when we partici- pated in the first Educational Jubilee at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, Then, suddenly, everyone was on his very best behavior and looking his neatest, as C.H.S. wel- comed the Evaluation Committee. How pleased we were to learn that the school was given an excellent rating, and that students, teachers, and officials were highly praised for their efforts. fveryonos flnni ing the Barnyard Bounce. Behind the elegant doors of the Wayne Country Club, amid the rustle ot frilly gowns and the black tuxedoes, many of us danced to the music of Jimmy Grimes and his orchestra at the Junior Prom, Serenade in Blue. The mad, crazy, fabulous Flapper Fling, with a Roaring Twenties floor show presented by talented members of the Junior class, was an overwhelming success. For many iunior girls the thrill of being chosen to serve in the Guard of Honor on Commencement Night was one of the most looked-for happenings of the entire year. Finally, as the DeLiters' rhythmic music made the Senior Commencement Dance a memorable event, we realized that in another year another iunior class would sponsor a Commencement Dance for us, the graduating class of l957. As we, the Seniors, stepped through the portals of C.H.S. to begin our last year, we realized that our time to stay was short. Yet this time has been crowded with many memories. i Arranging authentic decorations forthe Barnyard Bounce. We shall always picture Bill Bauman, our president, holding open the door to the senior representative meet- ing for Jim Ventantonioy vice-president, Harriet Jezierski, secretary, and Marcia Menegus, treasurer. At the Football Victory Dances, our Valley Conference Championship football players demonstrated that their dancing ability was on a par with their footwork on the football field. We found jail or marriage at the Barnyard Bounce, the only way to catch one's breath, during a strenuous eve- ning of Salute your partner and Do-si-do. Dining and dancing to the music of Bob Manzo Combo made the Senior Banquet, held at the Alexander Hamilton Hotel in February, an evening to remember. We missed our principal, Dr. Hanna, but a telegram, read to us by Mr. Jugel, assured us she was on the road to recovery from her recent operation. In May, dancing to fox-trots and cha-cha-chas, under the domed ceiling of the Essex House ballroom marked the last formal event, the Senior Prom, that our graduating class would sponsor. At the traditional Commencement Dance, presented by the Junior class in June, we said fare- well to our classmates and hailed those who would take our places as seniors in the fall. Proudly wearing caps and gowns, we walked through the door of Clifton High School for the last time. Before the watchful eyes of parents, teachers, and friends, we entered the stadium to complete the course we had begun four years ago. We know that we can no longer enter the doors of C.H.S. in the same way that we did in the past. The doors have closed firmly, to be re-opened to others, crowding close behind and eager to take our places. Yet, memories, realizations, knowledge, friendships gained during four wonderful years, can never be shut away from us. This part of Clifton High School is forever ours. lf' Kwan .GV Q. . .. . 5 .-.ww S' .,,Q..-A 1 N g 'i'i BW-re. T ii The Honor Guard receive their wands from Mrs. Angus. Those interested in gaining experience in manning motion picture and slide proiectors may ioin the Audio-Visual Aids Club. Then there are such clubs as Future Secretaries, Future Teachers, and Future Nurses in which members can learn about these profes- sions. While for future housewives, there is the Home Economics Club. Other girls, more socially minded perhaps, may loin the Tri-Y group. The Language Department sponsors various clubs to further interest in speech and customs of many countries. For aspiring young actors and actresses there is a Footlights Club. The Debating Club holds sessions once a month and each year sends selected members to New York University to debate with other high school students. Some pupils join the History Club for further study of world events. No math problem is too deep for the Knights of Pythagoras to attack. Amateur radio operators too have their organization. Junior Achievement provides an excellent opportunity for practical business experience. Choral and instrumental organizations are available for those interested in music. Proctors and Corridor Guides help to control traffic in the halls. School interest and activities are well publicized in the handbook, the yearbook, the newspaper, and the literary magazine. The Parent-Teacher-Student Association provides a meeting ground for the three groups, all concerned with the general welfare of the school. Not the least of Clifton High School's organizations is the Student Council, consisting of representatives from each home room. The Student Council charters all clubs, supervises the publication of the handbook, and assists in planning assemblies. lt also concerns itself with student problems and provides a strong liaison between pupils and administration. .,..-4 Q1 ' :W- 'Q '45 P P '3 'F -....e, ,,,, A lJ ' ' fl '-ffffk' 4! These groups perform at many assemblies during the year and also participate in a number of outside activities as well. The tTrst big event of the year comes in December when the Christmas Concert is held. This year an especially splendid pertormance was given under the direction of Mrs. l-lelen Koepke and Mr. Norman Mason- son, both at the regular assembly for students and in the evening for parents and triends. The evening performance was highlighted with the solo appearance of Gloria Malitsch, and also the singing ot the Senior Quartet and Sextet. Another achievement was realized when the Advanced Girls Glee Club gave a concert at the Passaic-Clifton National Bank in Passaic. Gloria lvlalitsch was chosen a member ofthe All- State Chorus, and she was also chosen with eleven others to sing in the Ninth Operatic Festival Concert sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera Guild. ' wwwf, .. -vxggv 1 lfL'ZZ6i in ll 9 on D ...g,wn 5 ,i fl fs L The year lust passed saw the completion of the Clifton High School Murals. Four years ago a selected group of students embarked upon an exciting task under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Gardner, Clifton High School's art teacher. The task proved to be difficult and at times even exasperating, but the satisfaction at its completion was glorious. The scenes of the murals tell the story of CIifton's part in the history of America from early days to the present time, The story begins with the days when the fTrst Dutch settlers came to strike a bargain with the Lenni Lenape Indians. There are scenes depicting the streets and the people of the old Acquackanonk Township, as Clifton was once called. There are scenes of booting on the Passaic River. Also there are scenes of our once-famous Clifton Track where exciting horse-races were held. Our school parking lot and Memorial Park also have now taken the place of this track. ln the last group of the murals are scenes representing the period after World War l to the present time. The paintings show the best talent of Clifton's art students. A great deal of credit is due those who spent countless hours on this proiect. ln the near future the murals will be placed on permanent display onthe walls of the cafeteria. King Footballl That's what they seemed to call it here in Clif- ton this year. The Mustangs went all out this fall, starting on September 3, when the team left C.H.S. for the Silver Lake training camp. The team was prepared to start football work- outs on the sandy field near the lake, however, everyone returned home almost immediately for polio shots, since one of the players had been exposed to the disease. Nevertheless, the team was determined to be in shape for the start ofthe season. On the second day back, the Mustang eleven scrimmaged with,Hackensack High, and Coach Joe Grecco could see that he had a team determined to fight and win, So the men worked arduously to whip their so- called weak defense into shape. This weakness, according tothe sports writers, was going to plague the Clifton team all season. But Coach Grecco and his staFf had other ideas. Coach Vander Closter had a man-size iob in getting the defensive and offensive ends into the best possible condition. He did a fine job with Neil Moat, Leroy lTigerl Collins, Pete Lehr, and Gerry Manning. Coaches Emil Chaky and John Pelach took care of the guards and tackles. Enough can not be said about their hard efforts to produce linemen from the material available. A look at our defensive record can iustify the work of these coaches, l i l i .-se 27 l u-'Q 131. If x .LM One reason for Clifton's having such a favorable record this year can be found in the work of coaches Walter Sea- man and John Corrubio, who kept the speedy backs in shape, ln the first tive games the Mustang defense held opponents scoreless. For the entire year Clifton scored 308 points to 5l by their opponents. The Mustangs wound up the season with an eight and one record, losing only to Montclair. Furthermore six of the All-conference team were Clifton players. They were Roger Fardin, quarterback, Bob Smith, center, Leroy Collins, end, Nick Russo, guard, George Telesh, fullback, and Dave Bosson, tackle. Neil Maat, Paul Pulichino, Bill Farkas, and Dick Moran gained the second team or honorable mention. George Telesh and Dave Bosson made Associated Press All-state, Roger Fardin and Dave Bosson made the Newark News and Star-Ledger All-state teams. Also Roger and Dave were elected to the National High School All-America Foot- ball Team, picked by Wigwam Wise Men Association and Scholastic Magazine. But this alone can't be a measure of the great success the Mustangs encountered this year. lt took the sweat and grind of every man on the squad to uphold the spirit and record of the Fighting Mustangs of Clifton High School. Graduation had taken many stars of previous seasons, but everyone was certain that Co-captains Jerry Tito and Larry Rice, as well as Harold Racheslcy and Al Swan would turn in creditable performances. As the season progressed, the harriers gained experience, but they couldn't muster enough power to fake the Passaic Valley Conference title. l-lowever, the year brought many surprises in such runners as Frank Mogavero, Richie Pazin, Craig Chamberlain, and Charlie Pierson. Larry Rice and Jerry Tito were usually well up front at the finish of every meet, These two also placed in the hrst ten at the Valley Conference meet. With so many underclassmen on the squad, Clifton can have high hopes that the experience gained in this year will produce a winning team in l957. S X -s X Do I have any volunteers? Endurance lestl -1 iaanlvw Track Led by two very capable trackmen, George Roessler and Tom Tivey, the Clifton track team turned in a fine record. The season began as well as any season could begin with a win over Nutley in which Co-captain Roessler competed despite an iniured ankle. The Pope Pius meet, which came next, supplied its share of thrills. Eastside was the target of the third win, thus offering memories of the previous year's loss. Victories over Garfield, East Rutherford, and Passaic kept the record unblemished. But a mighty Fairlawn could not be denied, although the Mustangs turned in a fine performance. Then Lyndhurst, a newcomer to the Valley Conference, set the Mustangs back, with the mile relay as the deciding factor. Ridgewood was the next opponent. Once again our cinder- men met defeat. l-lowever, they did quite well so far as team comparisons went. Thus ended the regular season. The Valley Conference meet was one of the most exciting and evenly matched in years. Lyndhurst nosed out Clifton by only a few points to take the championship. The Mustang spirit remained high throughout the season. Paul Pulichino accounted for at least T5 points a meet. Bob Seiias piled up points with his wins in the high iump and seconds in the hurdles. Co-captain George Roessler and Tom Tivey, the half-mile man, seemed to take turns coming in first. They also showed their versatility by their successes in the relay. Other valuable men, like Larry Rice, John Super, Frank Coda, l-larold Rachesky, George Demchak, Don Paruta, and Bob Goodkin helped to make the T956 team one to be remembered. K., ,V 7, , 1,iw,2,.,u,. Baseball Roger Fardin, Clifton third sacker walked, Rich l-lanle was hit by a pitched ball and Adrian Minardi beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Myron Zalom walked to force in Fardin, and the score was now 2-l in favor of Garfield. Norman Fray sacrificed l-lanle home, and Al VVernau's infield single broke the game up as Clifton came out on top 3-Q. This is the kind of ball Clifton played all season. The pre-season pre- diction placed the Clifton nine somewhere in the conference cellar, but the boys applied clutch pitching and good sound batting to gain the loop lead at the end of the season. The roster, which conquered all conference foes at least once and usually twice, ran somewhat like this. Playing second base and leading off was Moose Bosson, Roger Fardin, All-Conference pitcher, was used on the hot corner when he was off the mound, and he batted a sound second, batting third was co-captain Rich Hanle who was also an All- Conference outhelder. in the cleanup spot came All-Conference co-cap- tain Adrian Minardi, whose speed enabled him to play a fine first base. ln the fifth slot was hard-hitting Myron Zalom who played left field, swing- ing the timber sixth was shortstop Al Reisch, seventh was catching star Norman Fray, who was a fine ball-handler as well as a good man with the bat. Batting eighth was right fielder Al Wernau, whose smooth eye could adapt to almost any pitcher he faced. Rounding out the order was All-Conference pitcher Tony Reiter whose fast ball whiffed many a batter. One man missing from this lineup is Earl Sacks who came on late in the season. l-le accomplished feats never before known at C.f-l.S. For example, in one game he hit two successive homeruns, with his teammates not far behind. With similar performances by his teammates, there was little won- der that the conference record at the end of the season was seven wins and one loss. First row, left to right: P. Basketball Clifton l-ligh's T957 cagers started oft at a hot pace, handing defeats to seven foes before being upset by Passaic. As the season progressed the team received a few more setbacks but never let down until that final buzzer sounded. Led by Co-captains Mike Novack and Roger Fardin, Clifton defeated all out-of-conference clubs except Bayonne. Although the boys lost the conference title, they were always a threat to any team they met. Other members of the first team, besides Mike and Roger, were Tony Reiter, John Benko, and Bob Knight. One reason for the Clifton team's having such a suc- cessful season was that they had a strong bench. With boys such as Buzz Yuhas, John Angelo, .lack l-lazinski, and Marsh Potterton, Coach Bednarcik had no ditihculty in replacing any one of his first five. Team morale was also kept high by a faithful and enthusiastic rooting section. After dropping the Jamboree to Lyndhurst, the Clifton five entered the State Tournament. Playing as if inspired, the boys swamped Union l-lill, ln the second tilt, held at Teaneck, the Mustangs took on Dickinson. lt was a slow game with Clifton staying four or five points ahead. Then, in the final minutes of the last quarter, Dickinson took the lead by three points. Clifton scored on a long one-hander by Zeke Knight Next a drive by Roger Fardin put Clifton in the lead again, Time was passing, with fifteen seconds to go, Dickinson scored an a set shot. With nine seconds left, lack l-lazinski stole the ball, Page l28 rushed it down court, and passed off to Roger, who looked in vain for a drive, Finally he faked and threw a bounce pass to Zeke, who let oft with a one-hander from twenty-five feet which dropped through the hoop like the ball on the Times Building on New Year's Eve. That shot sewed up the second tournament game. ln the third game, Clifton was knocked off by Bayonne. Thus ended the most exciting and rewarding season that Clifton has known in a number of years.
