We, the aforementioned group, took the outstretched hand and entered into a new kind of life as high school students. We learned to love that old building, whose auditorium had a floor that creaked incessantly, whose surrounding yard was not quite large enough to accommodate us en masse. Few of us stopped to think that the entire high school had once been housed in one corner of this building, now bursting at the seams with freshmen alone. As mature high school students, we had new problems to faceg Algebra, Latin, and General Science were only a few. Our effect on the Annex may not have been singularly outstanding, but high school had a profound effect upon us. T HEN the Big High! Those first days were sheer agony for most, trying to go up the down stairs just a few times left us too exhausted to argue about the summons we received. To help us poor sophomores, the obliging seniors for a nominal fee sold us passes to non-existent elevators. The wonders of biology soon began to unfold, and to our amazement, no one fainted while dissecting his hrst well-preserved frog. The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar brought culture to our plebian world. We learned that assembly periods sometimes meant aptitude tests and visits to our counselors. These were the trials and tribulations of sophomores. Our effect upon the high school as second year students may not have been world-shaking, but being sophomores had a profound effect upon us. Page 66 lass iisitoir N ! A 'Isl 'T,n:n BEFORE we knew it, our junior year had arrived. Of course more subjects were then open to us: electrifying physics and American history with its generous supply of departmentals. Our class was organized under the sponsorship of Mrs. Terry Hanner, Miss Gloria Weiss, and Mr. Charles Gersie. After a vigorous campaign, we elected Don Fazio as President, George Roessler, as Vice-president, Judie De Luca as Secretary, and Dot Harding as Treasurer. One diploma apiece is quite enough. The first social event of the year was the junior prom. The mysterious letters A.S.F.I.F. posted around the school had us all wondering, until its meaning was disclosed as Attend Stat- light Fiesta in February. Don Seabeck and Nancy Holt were our King and Queen, with Bob Seijas and Joyce Galletta as Prince and Princess. After taking the Practice College Board Exams, many of us felt sure that we would never reach college. But June rolled around again, and for many girls a highlight of their junior year 'vas being an honor guard at graduation. Our effect upon the high school as third year students was rather noticeable, and being juniors had a profound effect upon us. FINALLY we were Seniors. As new needs arise, new clubs appear. Since September new organizations which have received official recognition include the Student Officers Senate, the Junior Red Cross, the Corridor Guides, Future Secretaries of America, and Future Nurses of America. Older groups have continued to he active and have had their membership strengthened. As our school continues to grow, undoubtedly new interests will ap' pear and the roll of organizations will in- crease to meet the requirements of a truly democratic American high school. Since the first days of the Passaic Valley Conference in 1936, the Clifton football team has gained seven cham- pionships, in the years of '44, '46, '47, '49, '51, '52, and '53, Without doubt Clifton is one of the foremost foot- ball powers in the area, even in an off-year, no team can take Clifton lightly. The 1955 football team had an overall record of five wins and four defeats, to gain second place in the P.V.C. with a 4-1 record. The Mustang eleven gained wins over Central, 32-0, Snyder of Jersey City finitial contestl, 27-12, Paterson Eastside, 28-13, East Rutherford, 20-14, and Garfield, 28-0. Of the four losses, three were non- conference contests, and the remaining was a 7-0 loss to Passaic. Many players helped to make this an exciting football year for their school. The sophomores included Larry Kolk, George Telesh, and Pete Lehr. Among the juniors can be numbered next year's captains, Nick Russo and Neil Maat, Paul Pulchino, Bob Smith, Dick Moran, Richie Passafiume, Leroy Collins, Dave Bosson, Roger Fardin, Bill Farkas, Jack Kievit, Paul Stevens, and Pete La Corte. The seniors who have played four years of football at Clifton are the co-captains, John Fayko and Steve Paduhovich, Bob Seijas, Don Fazio, Rich De Ghetto, and joe Cannariato. Joe Tkatch, Joe Cannata, and Bob Hagen also performed well. The coaching staff, headed by Coach Joe Grecco, came through with an outstanding job in molding the team into a smoothly operating unit. Much credit must be given to Assistant Head Coach Bill VanderCloster, who also doubled as the End Coach, Line Coach Emil Chaky, and Backfield Coach Walt Semon. An innovation in 1955 was the formation of a Cap- tain's Committee to help make things run smoothly among the coaches, teachers, and players. One job of this committee was to help carry out the idea started by the school newspaper, The High-Way, of giving awards to deserving players at the end of the season. This year's awards went to halfback Don Fazio, Most Outstanding Back, Co-captain and tackle John Fayko, Most Out- standing Lineman, Co-captain and tackle Steve Padu- hovich, Team Sparkplug, sophomore fullback George Telesh. Most Improved Player, and quarterback Bob Seijas, the Student Football Award. The possibilities of this committee are numerous and should enable football to contribute more than ever to the life of the school. Slart of the pack. tinue to be the team to beatf' Cross Country 'Q C1ifton's 1955 Cross Country season was one of the best ever, as our record of Cinder supremacy was again upheld by the Grimesmen. Coach Jimmy Grimes kept the boys moving, cutting time day after day. Thus, the Mustang Cross Country machine ran at 100W efficiency at all times, giving best results with maximum work. Two and one half miles seemed a long way when our boys first began practicing, but, when the season opened, they had never looked better. When the season ended, our record showed wins over Ram- sey, Eastside, Passaic, and Hackensack, losses to Bloomheld, Nutley, and Eastern Academy. The Eastern Academy meet was a heartbreaker, since we lost by one point. George Roessler took the lead in the performance field, finishing first in every meet except two. George, rated one of the cop cross-country men in this area, was quite an asset to the .Mustang cause. :Bi The 1955 Passaic Valley Conference meet was held at East- ' side. With George Roessler taking the lead, followed by his won by a decisive margin: Clifton 32, Eastside 41, Passaic 54 ,Ll comrades, Tom Tivey, A1 Swan, and jerry Tito, the Mustangs Compared to the fifty years of Clifton 1'1igh's existence Cross Country is in its infancy. As recently as 1950, our teams were very small. Then big guns started booming, as we won our hrst conference in 1952. Since then we have won consistently This fabulous record stands as proof of Coach jimmy Grimes's versatile ability. Track During the fifty years that Clifton High School has been in existence, it has had its share of athletic honor. The contribution of track, first introduced as a competitive sport in 1921, cannot be belittled. In the Passaic Valley Conference, our record has been average with seven wins since 1936. However this record does not include the many times when only a point or two sepa- rated the scores. Clifton's 1955 season, though not too successful as statistics go, was a building year, featuring many promising young as- pirants such as George Roessler, a spectacular half-miler, who was a certain pointer at every meet. Another was Paul Puli- chino, both a splendid 120-yard low hurdler and a 100-yard dash man. Still another excellent performer was Barry Mayer, who in the last event of the Nutley meet thrilled the rooters by racing across the tape to tie the score, 43-43. Coach jimmy Grimes worked the boys hard, teaching them , speed and endurance as well as courage and fair play. These necessary components of the game brought frequent victory and made losses easier to bear. Our record stood at wins over Pope Pius and Fair Lawn, ties with Nutley and Lyndhurst, and losses to Ridgewood, East- side, Passaic, and Garfield. The climax of the season came with the Valley Conference Meet at Clifton. Although Clifton captured only third place, our team's efforts were undoubtedly the best of the year. The speed of George Roessler, who won the half-mile, of Donald Seabeck, who came in second in the mile, and of Paul Pulichino who finished second in the 100-yard dash made a thrilling climax to close the season. .X XX Brain Trust Page I05 If' all 1 Q '11 ' I 1 'g r'- - ' tm.-at J.. .-:, '- . 4,,,.,'.,,-. ,Q 51 -f 5-'ff ' 7' en L.3:,.':-'gy' 'fi - 1 'rf 'Ziff J . 1' 3 f 5 3 B 3-' .15 91' s f f ' i . c fg y T I I 1 aaa. BACK Row: Jack Kievit, Bruce Carlson, Adrian Minardi, Mike Novack, Pete Lehr. Baseball Baseball in Clifton began in 1909 and has func- tioned vigorously ever since. Through the years there have been many outstanding teams such as the teams on which the two Bednarcik brothers, now our coaches, played, and the championship teams of '45, '46, '47, '52, and '53. Of course we are hoping to add to this list in 1956. Before the 1955 season began, Coach Eddie Bed- narcik predicted that his team would give some clubs plenty of trouble, and that they did. In many cases the team lost heart-breakers by only one run. Errors, poor base-running, but mostly tough breaks which marred the season, all took their toll. Even under these difhculties the team came through with the drive and enthusiasm which has come to be a Clifton trade- mark. Led by catcher Charlie Volpe, and Butch Ama- dio, second baseman, this team was one of the most highly spirited in the league. Without this spirit the one-run losses could have been devastating to the tea.m's morale. . Clifton held wins over Kearny and Montclair, split with Garheld, Central, and East Rutherford, and lost to Nutley once, Passaic and Eastside twice. Although Clifton was not predicted to be strong at the pitcher's position, Berr and big Carl Carlson showed themselves very capable. During the season Adrian Minardi, a Heet-footed hrst baseman, Roger Fardin, a third baseman, Pete Tyhala, an outfielder, Richie Hanle, the center fielder, Bob Morelli and Pete La Corte, who altemated at the shortstop position, all looked good. 1955 was a hard-luck year, but it was also a year for rebuilding the squad into one that should be the finest in the PVC. With at least three Sophomores and four Juniors returning to varsity competition in 1956, we feel sure that we can say with Brooklyn Dodger conhdence- Wait till next year. This group has many enthusiastic members who meet on Mondays at the Garden Palace, each one hoping that some day he will bowl that perfect game. Miss Gladys Akil- lian and Miss Lydia Wray act as sponsors of the organization. One highlight of the bowling season is the yearly Christmas tournament held during the holiday week. This year's winner in the boys' singles was joe Vapnar. In the girls' singles Phyllis Volos won. In the boys' doubles Joe Vapnar and Richard Rehenslci came out ahead, while Barbara Kopec and George Erhardt were victors in the mixed doubles. Trophies were awarded to the winners. The Bowling Club is a member of the American Bowling Congress which has tens of thousands of clubs in the United States and Canada under its jurisdiction. The rules of the game in all its varieties are published by this Congress. Scores of the winners of the local Christmas tournament are entered in the annual competition sponsored by the A.B.C. Hopes are high that some Clifton bowler will place in the judg- ing for national honors. Q , ..-:-. Q,-,r-J! , F.. E-1 Q' X meg X ,f',,-Z Z X H-I Q W fb 'A fu I Q' 2' 9. N s S. 2-.
