They have helped us lay the groundwork for our way of living, and their dili- gent training will remain with us through our whole lives. Therefore, in deep and sin- cere appreciation, we, the class of june, 1948, dedicate this yearbook to our parents. xxtrl X 'if THE CLIFTGN BOARD OF EDUCATION Sculul lvl! lo rigllvl are Paul C-rctchyn, Ncal Kuypcrs, XY'illiam Misslnacli, David Van Dillon, president, Fred Friend, school counsel, Mrs. Sarah C. GFORGE J. SMITH bupermtendent of Schools T 0 tba Qnzbrf of Clyflon High School: It is our performance of the hundreds of commonplace tasks of our everyday life that in reality determines the measure of our success. It is our willingness to do little things in a great way that raises us out of the class of mediocrity. And further, it is not the critic that deserves the commendation of the work-a-day world but rather the doer-the one who at least strives valiantlyg who knows the great enthusiasmsg who, in the end, if he wins, knows the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, as President Theodore Roosevelt put it, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never he with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat. My very best wishes for your future success, Sincerely, Superintendent lumcar N. Axlmmzsox wrviwr of SMUIIJ1 ' ,1 mu I I ILXRIJI IJ I. These glorious experiences we review with thankful satisfac- tion for they drew us closer to- gether and helped to unfold our talents and express our imagina- tive abilities. S-.Z ss ! ii CLASS Loo One bright September morning in IQ44, we set sail in a small dory named The Annex, a good little ship destined to carry us to the great liner C.H.S. ln those days the Sea of Knowledge was seldom choppy. By far the most exciting event aboard ship during the first phase of our voyage was the election of a captain. We shall never forget the gay posters that filled the companionways. After a vigorous campaign, which was the first of many our class experienced, Dick Rento emerged as our pilot and Fred Barney, first mate. With the arrival of june we inet the great liner and sailed into our sophomore year which we spent quietly just content to mix with the other higher oficers and crew members. .IUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS 'tfl lt fulfil: Ernie Buongiorno, Treasurer, joseph XXf'olak, Vice- lits dent llave Nelson, President, and Dorothy jacuhetz, Secretary. lt was in our junior year that we or- ganized as a class and elected the fol- lowing officers: Dave Nelson, Captain, joe Wolak, First Mate, Ernie Buon- giorno, Purser, and Dot jacubetz, Keeper of the Log. The football season during our junior voyage was one to be remembered. Un- beaten all season, we were invited to play Granby High School at Norfolk, Virginia. Loaded into buses, trains, and cars, hundreds of Cliftonites left for Norfolk. Even though we lost the game, we had barrels of fun! ln january, 1947, working with the 3-2 class, we presented our junior Prom, Winter Fantasy. While Marie Ermenville and Bob Boettcher reigned as Queen and King, the lads and lassics in their fanciest dress uniforms, danced to the lilting tunes of Allison Barton and her orchestra. Another social event during our third year was our Class Night. This was an uncharted spot on the junior voyage, but we plunged into the preparation with our usual class spirit. Several vocal selections by Marie Ermenville and Barbara Keyl, a square dance, and musi- cal games made lively entertainment and, besides having fun, the crew was drawn more closely together. ln june we decided to elect our Senior officers. This threw the crew into an- other frenzy of activity. Novel posters again appeared in the companionways. One loyal supporter wore a bow tie that lit up showing the name of a candidate, boosters of another candidate wore little Mr. Adams congratulates King Bolv Dancing to the strains of and Queen .Xlarie at .lunior l'roin Freddie Andrews' Five tags advertising their support. After the lively contest was over, our new Captain, Dick Rento, took over the helm assisted hy Dot Vlacuhetz, First Mate, Angela Culli, Keeper of the Log, and Andy Sventy, Purser. XX7hen we returned from our summer shore leave as senior officers, the main concern of the 4-l crew was the selec- tion of the editors of The Log. Of the many students who chose to write their reasons for wanting to he editor or as- sistant, Miss Nemeth and Mr. Halpern selected Catherine Mortgu and -loe Wcilak as editor-in-chief and associate editor, respectively. Our 4-I dance, Autumn Serenade, on Thanksgiving Eve, in honor of our victorious foothall team, drew an enor- mous crowd and did justice to the color- ful decorations Cathy Wtmlf and Dolores Maksimoski and their committee planned and arranged. An unexpected pleasure during this term was the performance of the na- tionally famous handleader-pianist ,lack So you want to lead a hand? Bare shoulders and white jackets set the mood for the eve- ning, another highlight of our life ahoard ship. lfxams followed in quick succession, the Commencement Dance and Class Day added to the excitement and gaiety, and then the hig night arrived! The strains of the familiar pomp and Circumstancen put a spring in our steps hut a lump in our throats. Proudly we ascended the platform, received our diplomas, and hlended our voices, which never sounded hetter as we gave our all for one last time. FOOTB LL The season of 1947 produced one of the Hnest foot- ball teams ever to perform under the maroon and grey banner of Clifton High School. Compiling a record of eight victories against one defeat, the Mustangs cap- tured the Passaic Valley Conference, and on a larger front, they gained possession of the Group Four, Sec- tion l crown. Although they faced one of the toughest schedules ever encountered by a Clifton team, the gridiron war- riors out-fought, out-ran, and out-scored their heavier opponents time after time. Teams such as Passaic, Perth Amboy, Dickinson, East Rutherford, and Car- tield fell beneath the power of the Mustang machine. Only an exceptionally strong Montclair eleven was able to defeat the Maroon and Grey. Many of the boys on the squad were members of our class, and the future football players of Clifton High School might do nothing better than to follow the fine examples these fellows have set. Bobby Boettcher leaves behind him one of the finest records ever achieved by a Mustang football player. Along with him go johnny Van Blarcom and Frank Pechal. These two well-liked, hard-playing backs leave not only good records, but also hordes of friends. To those of us who watched this team grow under the able guidance of Coach joe Crecco and assistants look Porter and Bill Lennon, this past season will always be a pleasant memory of our high school journey. xx f SSS ,sm Q Q NGK' x R -X 9535 Af x E Q sf 0 Q n, . .,, ' 1:04-R,:wr 4 ,,.... .4-A S f A' -Q f ' 4 2 Q .J Q -f , ', li I KS 2 1 ID ,--' v. After a long and hard winter, well over one hundred baseball hopefuls turned out for the initial practice session. Although many boys did not make the grade, we were fortunate in having many veterans return to the baseball diamond. As a result, Coach Eddie Bednarcik had the framework to build another team that brought home the bacon for C.H.S. Captain Bob Macaluso was the big boy with the wood and sent many balls flying over the left field wall. His performance in center field was much im- proved over former years. Also potent with the bat was jules D'Agostino, hard-hitting shortstop. Our mound staff of Lou Andreotta and Ernie Buon- giorno did yeoman work in keeping our team in the thick of the fight for the Passaic Valley Conference Championship. These boys came through when the going got tough. Of no less importance to the stability of the team was our corps of catchers, namely: Basil Surgent, jack Evers, and Bob Costantin. Harry Scofield, jack Sammarco, George Pasterchik, and Zeke Ullrich alternated in the infield positions. These men were responsible for the double plays that pulled the team out of many tight spots. Butchi' Kehoe and Al Russo received the nod from the coach for the outfield positions. To the baseball team we say Well Done and with it our hope that future teams will do as well. mx, ' 33? Coach ,lames Grimes molded a line squad of lield and track men and they did their part to carry high the maroon and grey banner. Our class is proud of its fellow classmates Bill jacobson, brilliant middle distance runner and broad iump artist, Albert Frauenknecht, middle distance man, and Steve Yurga and Richard Gincel, long distance runners. Many promising underclassmen showed outstanding abilities in the various events of this athletic activity. More seasons of competitive action will help these boys to overcome their lack of experience. However, we are sure that the future augurs well for track teams because of the interest and drive shown by the boys this season.
