This, accompanied by the numerous injuries which plagued our players, kept Clifton from winning the district championship. The Cubs opened the '55 season with a 33-'7 victory over the Connally Ca- dets. Their next game showed improvement by winning 39-0 over the Merid- ian Yellow Jackets. In our annual clash with Valley Mills, the Cubs powerhoused over the Eagles 13-6. This is the Cubs' third consecutive year to win over the Eagles. One of Clifton's hardest games was against the West Trojans, a an AA school. The Cubs gave by far one of their most outstanding performances, coming from behind in the last minutes to win by 13-12. The following week we played our second game with an AA team, the Hills- boro Eagles. Clifton scored first, but didn't have the power to withstand Hills- boro's heavy line, losing 19-14. In the first district game, the Cubs rolled over the Glen Rose Tigers 20-6. During the fleeting minutes with Granbury, Clifton came from behind to tie the Pirates 14-14. The Cubs lost their first district game in four years, bowing to the Itasca Wampus Cats 19-0, because of numerous injuries. We went on to triumph over the Alvarado Indians by a 26-6 margin and the Mansfield Tigers by a 42-0 landslide. This year Clifton placed one player on the All-District first team, which was P. D. Wallace. On the second team was Gene Ashcraft, Lloyd Aulie, Gary Cody, Bob Lane, and Kenneth'Larson. Those receiving honorable mention were Roland Anderson, John Phil Gilliam and James Otis Womack. P. D. Wallace received another honor by being named fullback on the second team of the A11-State Team selected by the Texas Sports Writers Association. The '55 grid season came to an end at the annual Awards Banquet, at which time the team and coaches were honored, and the co-captains, Bob Lane and P. D. Wallace, were named.
