The Staff presents with pleasure this 1954 edi- tion of the Old Mill. Many hours have gone into its making in order to preserve the many laughable and cherished memories that might otherwise have been forgotten. lf in turning its pages, you recall some of the happiest hours, best loved scenes, and valued friends of the past year, and if the pictures we have chosen make your memories of high school days more vivid throughout the passing years, then our purpose in publishing this annual has been fulfilled. Editor all ,Quads Ca.-au 'f was Fi Q, gi ROGER OLIVER was I. B. KUEHL AUBREY ROBERTS 95l'9UfVl tliijilw Because of their ability and coaching skill which carried our Clifton High football team to heights never before reached in the history of the school, we, the staff, respectfully dedicate this 1954 edition of the Old Mill to J. The Cubs went through the regular season tuidefeated and unued, winning nine games, six of which were district contests. In the state playoffs, the Cubs advanced to the semi-finals before bowing out. Through the first three weeks of play, the Cubs led the state in points scored per game. In the fourth game of the year, the high-flying Cubs broke the longest wirming streak in Texas high school circles by rolling over the might Valley Mills Eagles. The rest of the season was devoted to district play, and saw the Cubs romp over every dis- trict rival in a very convincing fashion. In the state play-offs, the Cubs went farther than any other team in C.H. S. history, before being beaten in the semi-finals by Ranger, who went on to wln the state title. When the All-District teams were selected by the coaches, Clifton placed five boys on the first team and two on the second team. Bobby Conrad, the Cub's brilliant quarter- back, was the only player to be chosen unanimously. Other Cubs on the first team were Tek Outlaw and Harry Cash in the backfield, and John Beaver and Jerry Cash in the line. John Jones and James Humphries, both linemen, were on the second team. Conrad was named the best back and most valuable player in the district and Beaver was named the best lineman. Bobby Conrad, the best football player and all-around athlete ever to come out of Clifton High School, was one of the top scorers in Central Texas with 207 points, and was chosen on the Class A All-State team by the Texas Sports Writers Association and numerous others. He is the only C. H. S. player ever to win All-State honors. John Beaver, the Cubs' great tackle and leader, was given honorable mention on the All-State team. Conrad and Beaver were also elected co-captains of the Cubs. The first game of the year saw the Cubs defeat Cranfills Gap by a 59 to 6 score. The next week the Cubs journeyed to Meridian and came home with a whopping 46 to 0 victory. In their first disuict game, the Cubs whipped Mansfield 45 to 0. The next game was. as many sportswriters said, 'The game of the age in Bosque County, for this was the one in which the Cubs met their arch rivals, the Valley Mills Eagles, winners of 38 straight games and confident of winning number 39 against the Cubs. The Cubs were just as confident of winning this one. When the day had come and gone, and the dust had all cleared away, the Cubs had given the Eagles a sound 32 to 0 trouncing. Thus ended the great winning streak of the once-mighty Eagles and their eight year reign as victors over the Cubs. The next five weeks saw the Cubs meet and defeat their remaining district foes. The Cubs took the first one from Granbury by a 14 to 0 count. Then came victories over Alvarado and Itasca by scores of 27 to 0 and 13 to 6. The next week the Cubs dedicated the new scoreboard by racking up an 81 to 0 win over Burleson. The Cubs took the last game of the regular season from Glen Rose 54 to 0. In the state playoffs, the Cubs first defeated Richardson '7 to 0 in the Bi-District game. Then came the 28 to 27 win over Paducah in the Regional contest, which was a thriller down to the last minute. The next week the Cubs defeated Whitewright 13 to 6 in the mud, for the Quarter- finals title. Then came the Semi-finals game with the Ranger Bulldogs. The Cubs led through the first half, but saw the lead vanish in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs finally won, 21 to 6. Thus ended the most successful season ever enjoyed by any C.H. S. football team. It was one of thrills, spills, chills, with joy and sorrow as well, but one which will long , 1 conradbe remembered in the minds of all C. H. The Juniors of '54 chose the Mardi Gras as the theme and went all out on decorations. It was one of the best banquets and prorns that C. H. S. has ever seen. Again, we the Seniors of '54 thank the Juniors and their sponsors for a wonderful time. The Baptist Church gave the Seniors a Circus Big Top Supper on April 23. April 11, Clifton High School presented to the public an Easter Cantata. The Seniors were honored with a party at Reddy's Retreat, given by the Hansen's and Ringness's. May--Q1 May 20 the Seniors were given a banquet by their mothers. The Rainbow theme was carried out. On May 13 the Seniors presented the Senior play, 'Stag Line. During May the Seniors had a Work Week to raise money for our Senior Uip. We had lots of fun, working and made money besides. On May 18 the Seniors observed Kid Day. We ate lunch at Meridian Creek and then came back to school to put on a program for everyone. On Sunday, May 23, the Senior Class of 1954 had its Baccalau- reate program. Reverend E. G. Tomkinson delivered the sermon, Bui1ding A Life. Wednesday Evening, May twenty-sixth the long awaited moment came .... Our Graduation. The address of the evening was given by Dr. Leonard A, Duce, Assistant Dean of Baylor University. Minah Hansen and Valorie Goodall were presented trophies for being Valedictorian and Salutatorian. At our last assembly the most outstanding students were announced. They were: Freshmen- -John Parks and Martha Colwick: Sophomores--Judy Appleby, John Gilliam, and Bob Lane: Juniors--Linda Jackson and Gid Smith: and Seniors--Minah Hansen and John Beaver. Thus ended the school year for everyone but the Seniors. We left May 28 for New Orleans, La. and returned on June lst. We had a marvelous time on our trip with many thanks to Miss Bettis and Mr. Appleby. fThree cheers for the bus ldriverl. So ends another school year for some, but for the seniors it 's so long to C,l-I, S. and four of the most wonderful years of our lives, some we'll never forget as full of fun. We'll never forget our classmates and friends at C.l-LS, To the teachers we owe a special thanks for their guidance through four of the most important years of our lives. To the ones left at C.H. S. we leave these few words--'Make these years at C.l-l. S. the best, and we hope you'll only have as much fun as we. We R E X T U R N E R Mr. C.
