CHS is proud of the two beautiful trophies that our football team added to our school. CONGRATULATIONS CUBSI CLIFTON 12-CRANFILLS GAP 0 The determined Clifton Cubs opened the season with a victory over their old rivals, the Gap Lions. Both teams played goodrfootball even though it was their first game of the year, Parks carried the ball over for the first touchdown early in the game and Henkel- man repeated it in the second quarter. CLIFTON '7-MERIDIAN 6 The Cubs took their second win over Meridian in a very close and hard-fought battle. Our only touchdown came on a pass from Parks to Conrad, Parks kicked the extra point that decided the game. Although Meridian seriously threatened the Cubs, it was not until the middle of the fourth quarter that the Jackets made their six points. The light, but determined, Clifton, line, really made quite a showing against the heavier Yellowjackets. CLIFTON 15-MANSFIELD '7 The Cubs put on a spirited display against Mansfield to take their first conference title. Mansfield proved to be a strong team, but the Clifton Cubs came through to defeat the heavier Tigers in a very exciting football game. The Cubs came out of the rather bruised and skinned, but victorious. Rex Turner received a serious knee injury that kept him out of play for the remainder of the regular scheduled season. CLIFTON 27 -GRANBURY 0 The second conference title was won on the Granbury field with Clifton defeating the Pirates by a score of 27 to 0. Bob Lane opened things up for the Cubs with his 70-yard run to nine yard line, From then on, Clifton took the ballgame. CLIFTON 48-ALVARADO 0 Conrad played outstanding football for the Cubs against the Alvarado Indians on our home field. It was an offensive ball game for Clifton, and the Cub backfield, led by Bobby Conrad, did a top-notch job. Alvarado's fumbles were a deciding factor in the outcome of the game. The Cub defense bottled up the Indians, who were never able to cross the Cub 40 yard line. The Cubs really played a flashy brand of football. CLIFTON 14-ITASCA 7 What some folks claim to be Clifton's best game was the battle against the Itasca Wam- pus Cats. A pass from Conrad caught by Parks in the end-zone gave the Cubs their first touchdown, Itasca came back to even things up early in the second quarter. However, that didn't stop Clifton, and before the half ended, Conrad had pushed over for another touchdown. The half-time score stood 14 to '7 in favor of the Cubs. Neither team scored in the second half, but it was jam-packed with one thrill after another. The Cub line was really put to the test when Itasca advanced to the Cub two yard line. But the wall heldg in fact, Itaxca found itself back on the eleven where an attempted fourth down pass was caught jointly by Clifton's Conrad and Itasca's back. The game was really a thriller. Henkelman, Beaver, and Humphries played one of their best games of the year for the Cubs. CLIFTON 20-MIDLOTHIAN 0 The Cubs cinched their district crown by defeating the Midlothian Panthers 20 to 0, P,D. Wallace scored the first touchdown for Clifton, followed by Conrad who returned a Midlothian punt for about 65 yards and a touchdown. The last score came on a pass play with Henkelman scoring for the Cubs. CLIFTON 34-GLEN ROSE 0 The Cubs ran wild over Glen Rose to close up their District ll-A conference. Harry Cash scored first for Clifton to start things rolling. The whole Cub Team really played an out- standing football game and each Cub player deserves a lot of credit and congratulations! 19 E--2 I ,xx xlwlav-ff-f .gs ai ,'-Mfxxfilhua-yfi ' :Q I I N t I ff u- CLIFTON 13-VALLEY MILLS 26 The Cubs suffered their only defeat at the hands of the VM Eagles, the longest-standing and most hated rival. The Cubs entered the game with a terrific weight disadvantage, but they put up a good fight, The game never really ended because Clifton's end Fred Henkelman received a serious head injury and was carried from the field in an ambu- lance before time was up, Play was not resumed and the Eagles took the victory. Clifton fams and CHS will never forget it. CLIFTON 25-LANCASTER 13 The Cubs won their Bi-Disuict Championship in a freezing rain in Cleburne over the heavier favored Lancaster Tigers. Even with puddles of water standing on the playing field, and the weather below freezing, the Cubs came through in the last minutes of play to take the Crown. Lancaster scored first but the Cubs soon tried it up with Parks scoring on an end around, Conrad carried it over the second time but Lancaster came back with a pass from Parks and in the remaining seconds of the game, Conrad intercepted a Lan- caster pass and returned it to the thirteen yard line. Cash and Wallace made the necessary first down and Conrad carried over for the last score. CLIFTON '7-CROWELL 47 The Crowell Wildcats turned on the Cubs to win the Regional championship at Vernon. Although the Cubs put up a real fight, the powerful Wildcats overtook them, Bob Lane scored our only touchdown with Parks converting. The Clifton fans were proud of the Cubs and stated that the Crowell team was by far the best team that the Cubs had en- countered all year. fl e lx gd..
