The club is affiliated with the Young Men's Christian Association. The club platform is: Clean Speech, Clean Sportsmanship, Clean Scholarship, and Clean Living. The purpose is to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school, and com- munity higher standards of Christian character. In December they had their annual Christ- HI-Y idis, Freddie Liptrap, C. A. Burton, Joe Rose, Wayne Estes, Billy Campbell, Pat Dunnigan, Tommy Rutherford, Raymond Claterbaugh, Raymond Clarkson, Bob Warren, Allen Sales, Roy Putnam, Richard Johnson, Jimmy Pullen, Kenny Scott, Brandon Shelton, David Webster, John Holland, Phil Roberts, Bobby Smith, Tom Wood. BETA CLUB The CFHS Beta Club is affiliated with the National Organization, and along with many other Beta Clubs from coast to coast, recognizes student scholastic achievement and good character and citizenship Only Juniors and Seniors who have a 90010 average are eligible for membership. After obtaining mem- bership a B average must be maintained to remain in the club. New members are elected by the club, approved by the faculty, and tapped at a very impressive candlelight ceremony at a school assembly. A large delegation attended the State Convention at Hotel Roanoke, after making money by a suc- cessful pop bottle drive tohelp pay expenses. The Alleghanian is the yearbook of C.F.H.S. and the staff is a member of the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. It is a pictorial review of the students, clubs, athletics, and activities. It is published in August so as to include baseball, the prom, and graduation. The staff consists of fourteen students, half of them on the business staff and the others on the editorial staff. Three members represented the staff at the S.I.P.A. Convention in Lexington, Va. this year. The paper is published at the cost of 3.50 a school year by a staff of selected students. The Mountaineer usually is four pages in size with a variety of articles to read. JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE The J.C.L., junior associate of the American Classical League, attempts to do for our school what the senior branch does for the nation, that is to pass on the torch of classical civilization to the modern world. Each year the J.C.L. publishes the newspaper, In Memorium Vergi1i, and also observes Latin Week in April The Latin classes annually have charge of an assembly program. Also this year they had a Latin banquet. Eight students went to Harrisonburg in April and participated in a Latin Scholastic Contest. The J.C.L. has 115 members, 49 being new members. The FHA is both a national and state organization. The C.F.l-LS. chapter is affiliated with the state organi- zation. The club consists of girls who have had or are taking home economics. The meetings are held twice a month after school. In keeping with one of its state wide goals they had an assembly on Civil Defense. The club also plans to complete a wardrobe for a needy five-year-old child. The FHA at Christmas had a mitten tree and the mittens were sent to CARE. The FHA held their annual Mother-Daughter Banquet in April. The State FHA -FFA camp held at Smithfield, Virginia each year was at- tended by several members. Our float won second place in the Homecoming Parade and members assisted in the Polio Drive. Our Christmas meeting gave us an opportunity to invite last year's graduates back to hear their view of the Hard Cruel World, Bake sales and lemonade sales provided financial aid and enabled us to attend the regional meeting at Madison College and also the State Convention in Roanoke. The Mounties ended the '57 season with a 1-7-l record, The one win came over the Buchanan Blue Devils and a tie with the V.S,D.B. Red Raiders. The seven losses were to six district teams with the other loss to the Covington Cougars. The battle for the Little Brown Jug turned out to be one ofthe Mounties best played games as they bowed 19-6. Only four seniors were on the team and they were all on the line. The whole starting backfield plus the substitutes will be back next year. Roy Putnam was the Mountaineer captain for 1957. Roy Putnam Coach Bill Mullins The Clifton Forge Mountaineers completed one of their most successful seasons in years at C.F.H.S. The Mounties compiled a 15-5 won-lost record and finished fourth in the District 5 standings. The Green and Gold quintet defeated each team in the District at least once and they were the only team to beat the front-running Waynesboro Little Giants twice. In the District 5 Tournament the Mountaineers were defeated by Lee High of Staunton. The record compiled this year is identical to the one by the 1955 squad that ended in second place in the Dis- trict, Roy Putnam was the Mountaineer Basketball Captain and Bill Mullins coached the team this year. s.
