JOE WOOD Tri-Captain EDDIE VAN LEAR Tri-Captain LEIGHTON ABBOTT Tri-Captain The Mountaineers began their season with smashing defeats of both Central High (26-0) and Buchanan (32-0). Bruce Clarkson provided a thrilling feat on the first play of the year by galloping 54 yards for a touchdown, the first time he had ever carried the pigskin in competition. Bill Gorman made a spectacular scoring return of the first kickoff at Buchanan. The Mountaineers again showed their strength by subduing the Little Giants of Waynesboro 21-6. In the second half the CFHS line, sparked by Chalmer Walton held like a stonewall for minus yardage. On a rain soaked field of mud, the Mountaineers suffered their first defeat, 20-12, in 16 conference games. Bruce Clarkson again led the offense by scoring both touchdowns. Fumbles provided the second seasonal defeat by giving Stanton a 20-7 win. The Mountaineers recouped their forces and a brillant line composed of Roy Putham, Tim McCoy, Jimmie Houff, Eddie Van Lear, Dickie White, Chalmer Walton, Leighton Abbott, and Richard Butler hald Buena Vista 6-6 until the last minute when Joe Wood passed to Bill Gorman for the winning TD. Against the prospective Conference Champs of Lexington, the entire squad played their best rounded game and held the Scarlet Hurricanes to a Homecoming 6-6 tie, a thriller all the way. In the traditional rival game of the year against Group I Covington Cougars, lack of depth made the margin of difference, and Clifton bowed 26-19, in spite of the aerials of Joe Wood to Donald Leitch. Leitch led the team by scoring two touchdowns. The C.F.H.S. line truly deserved its nickname of The Ironmen as seven regulars had to furnish the man power for the eight game schedule. Bruce Clarkson was named first string All Conference Halfback and Tri-Captains Joe Wood, Leighton Abbott, and Eddie Van Lear won second team berths. Tim McCoy received District honorable mention and Roy Putnam had the distinction of receiving honorable mention in All-State competition. COACHES James Laughlin and Howard Johnson
