As far back as 1858, the high school YMCA was the forerunner of the HI-Y and TRI-HI-Y Clubs in America,. The organiza- tion of clubs of high school girls in the YMCA began during and immediately fol- lowing World War 1, in several sections of the country under various names. In 1944, TRI-HI-Y Clubs were of- ficially recognized by the National Com- mittee on Work With High School Youth, and since that time have been an integral part of the National HI-Y Fellowship. The purpose of the TRI-HI-Y is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. The platform is: Clean Speech, Clean Sports- manship, Clean Scholarship, and Clean Living. The pin is a small triangle with “TRI-HI-Y” in the corners and a torch inscribed in a circle in the center. The triangle represents the entire personality --mind, spirit, and body. The circle in- dicates the completeness of Christian life; the torch, the mission expressed in the club purpose. They were undefeated and unscored on in eight games. They were the only team in the history of the conference to go unscored on in all of its conference games. The team started the year with eight returning lettermen. Coach Jim Laughlin returning after a years absence, worked the boys very hard and got them into good shape for the first game with the Central Falcons. Clifton Forge rolled over the Falcons 42-0 for an impressive victory. Richard Smith made the opening touch- down followed by TDs by Gorman, Wood, Truitt, and Duane Shelton scoring two. In the second game of the season, the Mountaineers smothered a heavy Harrisonburg squad 25-0. Smith passed to Sonny Broughman for the first score. Bayne, Shelton, and Smith made the other TDs. The hard charging line of Clifton Forge held the Blue Streaks to a total of 64 yards. The Waynesboro Little Giants were soundly trounced 37-0 by the Mountaineers. In a very muddy contest, the defense again shined and held Waynesboro to 48 yards rushing, while Shelton, B. Bayne, Truitt, Smith, and Gorman scored. The confident Mountaineers again won as they thumped Valley High 37-0. In a very hard fought game. The offence, though heavily penalized, gained 296 yards with scores by Smith (2), Broughman, Shelton, B. Bayne, and Gorman. Natural Bridge cancelled their game with the Mountaineers after several postponments. Duane Shelton, scoring 3 times, started as the Staunton Leemen were swamped 40-0. Truitt made 2 TDs and Gorman 1 . The defense was again outstanding. Undefeated Buena Vista met the Mountaineers and lost 52-0 for Clifton ' s sixth straight win. Shelton scored 3 TDs with Smith and Adcock getting 2 apiece. Once again Clifton Forge kept its record clean as it defeated Lexington 26-0. Shelton, B. Bayne, and Smith scored. The Mountaineers overran Montivideo 40-0. Shelton, B. Bayne, Smith, E. Bayne, and Clemmons scored. The defense was outstanding and held the Maroons to 76 yards. In their final game of the season, the Mountaineers lost to the Covington Cougars 34-18. With Duane Shelton and Elwood Bayne injured most of the game, the team seemed to fall apart. Shelton scored the first TD. Bill Gorman, taking Shelton ' s place played a great game. Guard Bill Moss, Tackle Elwood Bayne, and Fullback Duane Shelton made the all-conference first team, with Eddie Truitt landing on the third team and Eddie Meadows on the second. According to the district rules there can only be eight cheerleaders during football season and six during basketball. When there can only be six the cheerleaders rotate. These girls try out in front of the faculty and then in front of the student body, who vote on them. Besides attending all the football and basketball games the cheerleaders do much more. For a number of years now they have been completely in charge of Homecoming. For the first time this year the cheerleaders decorated for the Football Banquet. Cheerleaders for the 1954-55 season are: Seniors: Ruth Hawkins (Head Cheer- leader ) and Debbie Thompson Juniors: Kaki Payne (Assistant Head Cheerleader) and Donna Kaelin Sophomores: Anne Via and Dottie Morris Freshmen: Sarah Rumpf and Carolyn Picklesimer 46 RUTH HAWKINS HEAD CHEERLEADER 47 STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT; Bernie Bayne, Richard Smith, Donald Leitch, Duane Shelton, Roger Long, Tommy Clemmons, Eddie Meadows, Sonny Broughman, Bruce Clarkson, Tommy Lowry. KNEELING: Coach Red Dobbins. The C.F.H.S. Mountaineers did very well in basketball this year. For the third straight time they have gone to the tournament. They won 15 and lost 6 for the season. The first game was with Covington. We were victor- ious even though we had little practice. The score was 64- 35. The next game was with the alumni. This game they lost, 70-45. They then played Buena Vista beating them 63-50. In the Waynesboro game, Richard Smith led the team with 34 points. This broke the record of the school, set by Morgan Owen last year. They easily won this game, 70-30. They lost their next game 58-62 to Buchanan, but came back to beat Wilson 68-37. From here on for awhile they were up and down. They lost to Lexington, beat Staunton, Central and Buchanan; lost to E.C. Glass. They then beat Na- tural Bridge 73-53 and Buena Vista 83-41, and lost to Wilson Memorial 46-49 in the last part of the game. At Natural Bridge the Mountaineers won 67-43, Clif- ton Forge now on a five game winning streak, beat Staunton, Lexington, Central, Waynesboro, and Covington. The Mountaineers ending up 2nd in the district, drew Lexington in the tourn- ament. They won 52-39 with Richard Smith playing one of his best games of the year. They lost their next game with Warren County 51-71. The Mountaineers played in a consolation game with Broadway losing 54-70. Tommy Clemmons did a good job in the Lexington game by holding down Chit- turn, Lexington’s threat. In the Central game. Central tried to hold down the score by freezing the ball. The Covington game was close all the way. This was the most exciting game of the whole season. Property of Alleghany hlighlands Genealogical Society SENIOR POEM Various hardships, trials, and joys. Place us where we are today; But halt not here, nor falter. For our span’s too short to stay. We’re leaving now, you’re going too; To be captured in memory’s sweet store; The dances, the classes, and all our friends, And more, yes, a thousand times more. Let us reflect our humble thanks. To those who have seen us through. We’ll always do our very best. And we’ll always remember you. So when we finish life’s hard school. And our tests are scored one by one; May we hear the greatest Master say, “Well done, my child, well done.’’ By: Marvin Scott Class Flower: RED CARNATION Class Color: RED AND WHITE 53 SeHIOR DIRECTOR LAWRENCE ADCOCK Mouse Beta Club 3,4; Hi-Y 4; Football 3,4; K.
