Go back with me now and let us reminisce awhile. Remember those first horrible days when we went to the wrong rooms, opened the doors, and were met by the laughs of those awesome upperclassmen. Soon, however, we caught on and also caught the school spirit that would make the coming years mean so much to us. For our leaders that year, we chose: Charles Magee, president; Loretta Kern, vice president; Dolores Lawler, secretary, and George Estes, treasurer. Our faltering footsteps were led that year by our home room teachers as our sponsors. We made our debut into social affairs at Clifton Forge High School at the Halloween dance given us by the Seniors. We also gave an assembly program as our initiation. It was a scream. Well, we thought so anyway. With a feeling of pity for those poor lost Freshmen wandering around the school, we confidently entered our Sophomore year with Dolores Lawler, president; Billy Bath, vice president; George Estes, secretary, and Jack Winfrey, treasurer. Miss Mary Clancy served as our sponsor. That year, you remember, we didn’t do much to claim attention. We were too new to be into everything and too old for every day to be a novelty. Remember how our Junior year seemed a battle for ole Mr. Dollar? With Harry Woods, president; Libby Lawrence, vice president; Billy Bath, secretary; Barbara White- side, treasurer, and Miss Clancy, sponsor, we finally succeeded in financing a Junior-Senior Prom to be proud of. The armory was decorated in the Senior colors, pink and white. At the entrance and around the orchestra, were silver horseshoes for good luck. Remember how hard it was for us to believe that at last we were Seniors? It was a proud moment when, at the first assembly, the whole school stood up for us to march in. We settled into the routine with Billy Bath as our president; Connie Lyons, vice president; Libby Lawrence, secretary, and Danny Diamondidis, treasurer. Miss Van Horn has been our sponsor. Some things that we’ll always remember about our Senior year are: The football games and dances; the Hi-Y dance; the donkey basketball games; the Senior Play, and the wonder- ful Prom given us by the Juniors. Although we are sorry to leave, we know that the traditions of our school and her hopes for the future will be well taken care of by those coming after us. Our challenge as we go out to find our place, might be summed up in these words: “Let us then be up and doing , With a heart for any fate. Still achieving , still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. The Mountaineers won three and lost six games during the year. The boys fought hard in every game and never stopped trying, but the fact that they were outweighed in every game and that they lacked capable reserves could not be denied. The Mountaineers opened the season by defeating Central 18-6. Mason scored twice and Westerman once in this contest. The heavy Greenbrier team smothered the green and gold-clad Clifton squad 36-13 in the second game of the year. Next, the Blue Streaks, of Harrisonburg, led by Sipe, a great all-around back, took Clifton Forge 28-6. The Mountaineers captured their second victory of the ’48 season by turning back Buena Vista 14-0 with Liptrap and Mason scoring. Then came, perhaps, the worst game of the season for the Clifton boys when Valley High upset Clifton Forge 13-0. Overconfidence was, undoubtably, the main cause of this loss. This game, however, didn’t keep the team down. They played a hard, well-fought game with Winchester, the champion of the conference, finally losing 26-0. They then, took a close, exciting game from Staunton, 6-2 with Mason scoring the winning touchdown on a 30-yard jaunt. Then came the game of the year for Mountaineer fans, the annual Clifton Forge- Covington game. The first half of the game was grueling and rough with some outstanding line play on both teams. But, with the score standing 7-0 at the start of the second half, the Cougars broke loose and scored three times against the tired and outmanned Clifton Forge squad to win 26-0. The final game of the year with Lexington can be summed up in two words, “Pooley” Hubert. This boy, unquestionably one of the best high school passers in the state, wrecked the Mountaineers 43-6. He gave a tremendous passing exhibition, throwing five touchdown passes, besides scoring once himself. Congratulations should go to the team for its play and to the coaches, Crawford and Stevens, for their leadership during the season. Jjo Ok. The progress of both is dependent on capability, effort and the extent to which mankind is served. It was less than 40 years ago that the firs rayon plant was built in the United States. Today, the manufacture of rayon is a major industry, employing many thousands of per- sons and making a notable contribution to- ward a more pleasant and comfortable life for all of us. When rayon was introduced to the field of textiles, it was used primarily in the manu- facture of knitted garments for women. Today, rayon is used in virtually all types of wearing apparel, many household furnishings, and in tires, industrial drive belts and conveyors. More uses for this remarkable man-made fibre will be unfolded in the future. For the young citizens of our country, the future holds great promise. The high school graduates who have just marked the end of one and the beginning of a second important milestone in their lives can make of the future whatever their abilities and efforts will per- mit. Just as much as in the past, the horizons today are unlimited for the youth of a free land. To the members of the Senior Class, on this occasion of their graduation, we extend our very best wishes and congratulations.
