In past years, the seniors have always dedicated the year- book to one member of the faculty, whom they felt had helped them more than anyone else. This year the seniors have decid- ed to dedicate the yearbook to all of those who have helped to mold us into whom we are now. The faculty. For about the last thirteen years we have attended school; each year meeting new teachers. Probably very few of us ever took the time to tell any of those teachers, “Thank-you for all your time and energy.” So now as seniors, we can look back and see that they deserve some kind of recognition for their help in making us whom we are today. Very soon we will be going off on our own. So now we look back at all our teachers did for us. School teachers were the ones who taught us how to count to one hundred. Teachers were the ones who taught us to say the alphabet and what sounds the letters make. They taught us how to put our letters together to form words. On and on through the years, the words became sentences, sentences became paragraphs, and the paragraphs became essays. All the way up into high school, teachers were teaching us the basics we would need to know for our future. Pretty soon it will be time for us to say, “Good-bye ” to Clifton-Fine and all those associated with it. We have made friends and we promise to come back and visit, but nothing will ever mean more to us then your help, understanding and the sharing of your knowledge. We want to say, “Thank-you for all the little things you did.” Maybe you stayed after school to help that one student who didn’t understand. Maybe there was a time when you stopped what you were doing to help out one of your students. Or we could say “Thank you” to those who were our class advisors, or who were a coach for a sport. We could also thank the teachers that helped us in sixth grade when our camping trip was can- celled becaused of lack of funds. Whatever it was you did, we do apprecate it, and in case we never got to say it before, we have said it now, and will say it again: “THANK YOU!” Top left: Bruce Folsom; center: David Soesan, Kerstin Schillings Bottom left: Adam Bullock; center: Craig Woods, Mrs. Vater, and Carlos Sanches; right: James Laurin Adam Bullock; right: Donald Snider SENIORS Mark Rixon Adam Bullock Catherine Bush Peggy Bush Row 1: Barbara Shene, Craig Woods, president; Row 2: Craig Towne, Leslie Thivierge. At one time or another, most of us have had to deal with the loss of a loved one. In August of 1980, we lost a classmate, Melissa Bickford. She was our frriend and we miss her. She is in our minds and will always be remembered. Also, in April of 1984, we lost another very close friend, Scott Bullock. He was the type of person whom everyone enjoyed being with. A sophomore is in- volved in many more activites, whether it be sports, music, or raising money for the senior trip. A sophomore, who is gradually maturing and climbing the lad- der to Graduation day, must also be thinking about the future and what his place is in it. He must decide about what college and what type of career he wants to spend his life doing. The sopho- mores also have their fun. They go to all of the dances and get together with friends after school and on weekends. As a class they grow closer together until they go out on their own, out into the “real” world. I have seven classes a day out of eight periods. On top of our regular classes, we have to take health and French, which make my schedule as full as it can get. I know anyone in ninth grade would tell me I don’t have much work, but for the time being, it’s enough...Ryan Snider. JUNIOR Umi Seventh grade is work! “You want to know what seventh grade is like to me, here you go” (Stephanie Tebo). Many think it’s different. More than that: “It’s an extreme change from elementary school” (Shannon So- lon). The changes are interesting; they get challenged and the students are very busy. They get a lot more work and most kids think, “It’s hard, but easy” (Kelly Smith). Being is seventh grade “is a whole lot of fun” (Shelly Christian) and “It’s like going crazy” (Daniel Johnson). “Seventh grade is like a job where you get something done, but you always have something to do” (Pam Wright). After all, most students like seventh grade. It’s interest- ing and they have fun. Sixth graders: be excited for next year. It’s a great year. I I like fifth grade a lot, not just because of the work, but because of the teachers and the activities, such as our trip to Bear Mountain a few days ago...Nicole Cook In fifth grade, you get to get your own locker, and you get to take showers after gym. In Mrs. LaRocque’s room we have fun games and she has animals, too. In Mr. Collins’ room we Book-it. I like to read books some of the time, so I like it...Kathy Hubbard Fifth grade is different from all the other grades. Not only by different teachers, but by different ways of doing things. In fifth grade, you feel more responsible for yourself. You also take on new challenges...Robin Hance I like fifth grade because it’s fun and it’s hard. But it always can’t be fun. There are times when you have to get serious about things. The best thing I like about fifth grade is that there is time when you can fool around and, on the other hand, there is time when you can’t. So for all you fourth graders, don’t think fifth grade’s hard. It’s pretty fun if you do your work...Brandi MacCue FIFTH GRADE I like fifth grade be- cause you do fun things like draw, watch movies, play in the little gym, go outside after lunch, and go on trips. But the thing that’s most important is work. I like work, too. I like math, science and so- cial studies. In science we do lots of activities with mealworms. We put them through mazes and things. Kindergarteners must learn the basics; to share, to make friends, to read, and to write. For Kinder- garteners this is a new ex- perience. Being away from home and adjusting to school life is a major change for them. But these Kindergarteners have a tough climb ahead of them to be a part of this ever-changing world. They will have tougher standards to live up to as they get older than did past students. Congratula- tions, Kindergarteners, for completing the first step of that steep set of stairs. Honorable Mention: Brian Eddy, Craig Towne. Andrea Palm and Kerstin Schillings This years’ Boys Varsity Soccer Team started a very succesful sea- son with a home game against Harrisville, which they won with a score of 4-2. They were undefeated until they played against Lisbon. The boys lost this game 1-2. But this strong team, consisting of ten seniors, nine juniors, three sopho- mores and one freshman, started their winning streak again after this game. They lost their only other game near the end of the season to Edwards-Knox. The team finished their season with their two play-off games. The first against Chateaugay and their final loss to Edwards-Knox, 5-1! The team not only shared many vic- tories together, there were also lit- tle things that kept them together! Made and missed penalty kicks, bus-rides after away games, an after all good tournament and a Portugese-order at McDonalds! This years Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team had good players, the right spirit, a good coach and they worked and stayed together as a team. That was what made them a CHAMPION team! CONGRAT- ULATIONS! Above, left: Harold Meek; right: James Piiparinen; center left: Ken Hitchman; right: T.J. Sellers, Ken Hitchman; Bottom right; Coach Reil. The Boys Modified Team had a succesful season this year with only two losses. There were only four freshmen on the team with smallest in the goal. With the freshmen leading, the 8th graders with one year of experience, and the 7th graders helping, the team was complete. They had a really good season! So, instead of running down a list of Mrs. Vater’s best qualities, which I think she would disdain, I will simply relate to you the conversation I had with her on her last day at Clifton-Fine. It was late one evening after school and I was jogging by the library when I spotted her walking towards her room with a bag full of papers strapped over one shoulder. After I decided to talk to her, I had to keep jogging to catch up since she was walking so briskly. I knew bet- ter than to ask her how she felt, since she would dismiss the question with a clear “phooey” and change the subject. There was always something more important to talk about with her: Whiz Quiz, or literature or her beloved “Far Side” cartoons. As she sat behind her desk arranging papers, I realized her sense of order and no-nonsense manner contrasted sharply with her ridiculous and joyful sense of humor. Finally I left her to her work, and she gave me a smile and a wave good-bye and was back to her papers before I had even left the room. It was to be her last lesson, the last time she talked with a student from behind that desk. Over her years of teaching at C-F, she had sat there and tried to enlighten and amuse thousands of students with an honest and unwavering confidence which few possess. Still, in trying to write an honest memorial, it is not my place to praise Lillian Vater, but to miss her. Good-bye, Mrs. Vater. Being a captive work force enabled the staff to produce this yearbook for you at an earlier time and to earn the extra money needed to pay for it so your cost remained reasonable. In addition, 1988 finds some features new to a C-F yearbook: first, some color pages, and second, a fall supplement which enables us to get this done early and yet provide coverage through spring sports, the prom and graduation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who were instrumental in our perceived success and to note some exceptional staffers: Carlos for his long hours in the darkroom when we were desperate, Flipper for his concentration, Patty, Kelly and Stef for their hours at the keyboard after school, Mark and Scott for their artistry, Nene’s fundraising, Craig’s financial wizardry, Chris’ solving the computer, Alvin’s T.C.B. and Rachel’s dozens of different contributions. Beyond these, Hope, John, Andrea, Leslie, Amanda, Holly, Peggy, Kerstin, Sean and Mike. This is your book. Students dressed up in something as ridiculous as this can’t go through the day without interrupting a class at least once. Slave Day is a day when the Juniors make money for their class and have a really good time being embarrassed. They all have their names up in the lobby for about four days where anyone can bid on them. Whoever has the highest bid by Thursday buys the slave. On Friday morning, the owner can dress him or her up and make the victim carry his or her books, perform silly stunts like pushing a penny down the hall with his nose, and just have a good time. They visited the city of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. There, they visited several memorable sites. The Casa Loma is a 98 room medieval-style castle in the heart of Toronto. The castle was built between 1911 and 1914 by Sir Henry Pellatt. The CN Tower is the world’s tallest free-standing structure at 1,815 feet and five inches. Yet another point was Canada’s Wonderland, one of Canada’s largest theme parks. On the trip back home, the class visited Niagra Falls, Canada. Everyone enjoyed the trip, even the chaperones: Mr. and Mrs. Tate.
