IS oven worse, i think, Through hop-scotch games and giggling nights To feel the shame I feet right now And make-believe and campfire lights for not having said, “You’re my friend’’, To Christmas caroles sung merrily or “!tike you , or “I love you’’, We laughed together; sure we’d always be. And not learn from it. But you and your family moved away And before I got a chance to say How much our memories really meant, We’d both grown too sophisticated for such sentiment. Then, it happened. And all the tears and shock And useless questions and talk Of “How?” and “Why? are bloodless cries inside an empty wind that merely dies, As all we must. And it is too late to say anything.
