“
Look around. . . See, hear, taste, feel, • smell. . . Your senses can record all of it. Let them. What do they find here? Here in our community nestled securely in nature? The peace of the woods, wildlife, clear streams, tranquil greenness, white snow, clear air, free of offending odor and dust, flowers. . . how fortunate we are to live here, safe from real pollution. But now move out further. . . See just a little more. What is recorded now? A junkyard or two. . . or three, dumps filled with wasted fruits and gems of the earth, litter, exhaust from cars, smoke, a gully slowly eroding, losing fertile soil, a little scum on the water? grimy dust in the air? and odors, my God, what smells so? and say, it's getting a little crowded in schools and churches, isn't it? It's all here. We are not safe from the corruption of nature or overcrowding. Only our day of reckoning is postponed for a decade, maybe two. In the beauty of nature, talk of pollution sounds a somber tone. And so it is. The process from ecology to ecologi- cal crisis, from environment to environmental danger is a tragic process which one can ignore, but whose results are blindingly evident. It is up to us, the individuals, to stop the process before it eventually stops us. We can stop it. . . we must stop it. . . Will we? A CAUTION TO EVERBODY Consider the auk; Becoming extinct because he forget how to fly, and could only walk. Consider man, who may well become extinct Because he forget how to walk and learned to fly before he thinked. ()(fden The 1972 Mountain Echo Staff ded- icates this book, the record of this year's acheivements, to one of our favorites on the coaching staff. He came to us in 1965 as a graduate of Oneonta, and got his Master's De- gree in guidance in the summer of 1970. A large part of his work is with the primary grades where he is well liked, but his major concern is with developing all students into well-rounded adults. The shining star in his life is wrestling. He be- gan in 1965 to build his champions. Every day after school during the sea- son, you will find him in the all pur- pose room, working out with, and encouraging his wrestlers. Ata brief glance he might seem inconspicious but to those who know him he is an important factor in their lives. It is he whom you will find offering to chaperone dances, and he is the one who first insisted on spectator buses for wrestling. For all the hours of devotion to the development of boys into men, we dedicate the 1972 Mountain Echo to Joe Russo. 6 DANIEL J. McGUIRE, Supervising Principal HAROLD J. BERO, KENNETH H.
