Text from Pages 1 - 62 of the 1964 volume:

Dear Mr. Marshall For many years you were around these ivy halls of ours, lending aid to poor, friendless, or under-privi- leged students. It made no difference to you if their name happened to be Rockefeller, Ford, or Brown. You always turned an interested ear, or gave out some fatherly advice. It seems that you could issue an ultimatum and it was followed to the Nth degree, quickly and graciously! We miss you now because you have spent so many days and hours with us — from the time of the little white schoolhouse to the era of our big sophisticated one. May your days of retirement be happy and satisfying, as you look about the community and see many leaders, who were molded by your influence. Even today we are sure they look up with the same degree of respect that they had thirty years ago. You have been a good and kind teacher, and all of us who have been privileged to associate with you, whisper a very sad “Farewell.” Students and Faculty Dedication E ver ready and willing to do her part, U sually flits around with a dash and dart. G ives time generously to the Blue and Gold— E ventually it’s a masterpiece to behold! N ever refuses to help when she can, I f it happens to be a student of fellow-man. A sincere worker in both church and school, ’C uz she lives and believes in the Golden Rule. L auded by her students in the Commercial field. I nterested in what their efforts might yield. M ay we dedicate to you this annual yearbook— IE xpect you will be anxious to have a look.) N ever forget that we are very happy to S alute a teacher who has been “true-blue.” 0 ccasionally reflect as the years come and go, N ow — please accept our 1964 Mountain Echo! Congratulations to the Senior Class of 1964, and the members of the staff on the “Mountain Echo” and their advisor, Mr. Stangle. We are grateful to all of those who have given their efforts to provide us with this yearbook. In this day of everyone telling what went wrong with our public schools, let’s forget the fault and do something about the problem. We must see that our schools do everything possible to get every student to do his best. Parents must help to get their sons or daughters to work harder than ever before. They must insist that their boy or girl take the “tough courses” if he or she has the ability. They must see that home- work is done—even if it interferes with T.V. programs and other activities. We must insist on “respect for authority” both at “home” and in “school.” We must also develop “respect for learning.” We here at school are ready to double our efforts and put forth the best that is in us. We know that we can count on the students and parents putting forth their best—so that it no longer will be a case of everyone “trying to get by.” 4 STANDING: F. Griffen, N. Jarvis, R. Clark, G. Each student has the opportunity to have annual dental examinations, whereby, if any dental defects are discovered, parents are notified. CAROL GRIFFEN, Speech Correctionist Speech correction is concerned with those children who have difficulty with verbal com- munication. The program is centered around students in the early primary grades. Prob- lems range from seriously delayed speech to mild articulation disorders. MAUDE C. DeVOL, School Nurse Teacher The nurse is also attendance supervisor so that all absences are investigated and excuses signed here. Each child is screened annually; that is weighed, measured and eyes and ears tested. The ears are tested with the Audio- meter as shown. Minor first aid care is given and anything of a serious nature is referred to the school or family physician. 7 SEATED: R. Gebo, J. Sykes, B. Stevens, F. Wendt, M. Miller, B. McMullen, P. Beckman. Take it easy, Barb, those front flops are wild. WILLIAM SIMMONS leaves his wild days in Wanakena and his American History worksheets to JoAnn King. Remember, JoAnn, unfinished worksheets and then detention. DONALD SMALL leaves his wonderful, and Quiet History Class with Mr. Colton to Steward McCullouch. Stock up on paper wads and rubber bands, you will need them. HERBERT SNIDER leaves his ability to drive carefully and slowly to Harold DeLair. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, Harold. BARBARA STEVENS leaves her ability to talk in Health Class to Estella Peabody. I hope you have as much luck as I did. GARY STOWELL wills ability to fight his way out of the locker bay at dismissal to Glenna Tubbs. Remember, Glen- na, have Patience! JUDY SYDES leaves her secretarial talents to Linda Hittle. They will come in handy someday—I hope. LARRY THIVIERGE leaves his abilities to put a car together to Beth Campbell. Maybe now, Beth, you will be able to build your own car. BONNIE THORNTON leaves all the ranger school boys to Frances Peterson. Take real good care of them, Frances—they need it. SHEILA TROMBLEY leaves all the boys in Oswegatchie, but one, to Barbara Mallette. There should be enough for you without one. FAYE WENDT gladly leaves her ability to worry about her friends to Mary Ellen Bassette. I hope you don’t get gray hair like I did. SHEILA WHITMORE leaves her inability to make up her mind to Alice Robertson. At least people never know what you are going to do next. 18 FIRST ROW: A. Robertson, R. Baker, J. Golden, L. Titus, B. Varsity Basketball 57 Skiing is the most popular winter sport in the Clifton-Fine area for both young and old. The local Lions club provides us with our own ski slope and tows. The local ex- plorer scouts operate the “ski shack” and serve good things to eat. This winter we welcome all the stu- dents from Potsdam State Teachers College who used our facilities. Skiing The 1964 Mountain Echo Yearbook staff wishes to express their gratitude to Gerald Sheldon, our yearbook photographer, for all the extra hours and hard work that went into the very fine pictures. 58 We, the class of 1964, would like to express our sincere thanks to our school staff, including cafeteria help, custodi- ans, and bus drivers.
