During this time we have striven to build the kind of school which Dr. Scott envisioned. Through our curriculum, staj, and student body those qualities which mature the mind, strengthen the work of the group, and contribute to the welfare of the community have been emphasized. With the hope that the future will be as full of achievements as the past, the Tartan staj of 1957 presents this book to you as a lasting record of four memorable years. ,vs .4 5 1 .2 ' A52 x grit' Q . .6 -...- - . -.. we fx iw .. - - ,- Qu.- iii! .. , -4 1541 .. ... .. uw...- s-in . 4 ,f. .ss LE if -1. There were no energetic juniors and wise seniors to help carry the load. It was truly remarkable how well the students in the lower classes attacked and solved problems per- tinent to a new school. They wanted to know if we were going to have corridor patrols, a student court, school plays or class plays, and how soon there would be athletic teams. From these co-operative endeavors and various concerns there began to emerge in rough outline some of the things for which, I am sure, all howl a joy to see the students improving in manage themselves, in assuming re- ways, in learning how to and to arrive at conclusions based presenting ideas effectively to others, to know that there can be no freedom democratic ideals without a due re- te d for law and order. sq, ally, while proud of accomplishments achieved, Scott High, we know, will face the years with a firm will and a burning push on to still greater goals. Perhaps the best meet was against East Side, when the Scott cindermen almost shut the East Siders out. Scott was well represented at the State Meet at Rutgers with fifteen entrants. But a muddy track hampered the Scotties so much that Jonas Swenson was the only one to place, scoring a fifth in the Mile. GIRLS' SPORTS 1956-1957 SCo'rr CAN WELL BE PROUD of the fine reputation its girls' athletic program has earned throughout the years. Intensive planning by Mrs. Doll and enthusiastic participation by students have made this program outstand- ing. Dolly has set a high standard in sportsmanship and spirit. Her vitality and superb leadership will be sorely missed when she leaves us this year, but her girls will never forget her inspiring philosophy of sports- manship and citizenship. Although most of girls' sports are played after school, activity in the physical education department never ceases. lt is the responsibility of the Girls' Athletic Board, which consists of two members elected from each class, to plan this extensive program, including such events as the Modern Dance Tea and the Annual Awards Party. The predominant fall sport is hockey. A large representation from all classes turns out on brisk afternoons to vie with the football team for practice space, however, this handicap does not prevent the girls from com- peting both among themselves and with other school teams. Winter brings out volleyball and basketball enthusiasts. These competitive sports are refereed by mem- bers of the Olficiating Group, which meets weekly to learn the rules and regulations of the various sports. During the spring, softball and tennis are offered, with matches held at nearby Soveral Field. Throughout the year Modern Dance is also popular. Swimming held at the Orange Y.M.C.A., was recently glamorized by the addition of a water ballet group for advanced swimmers. Instruction is given in the fall and spring in swimming, diving, and lifesaving for all girls who are interested. A proposed gymnasium and athletic field should prove an added incentive for expanding the already rich sports activity schedule GIRLS' ATHLETIC BOARD Rou 2 Barbara Hubert Gail Haupt Betsy Goodrrdge LuAnn Smith Susan Shipman Betsy Underhill 0 Left to right, row 1: Eleanor DeRose, Marian lvfatheke, Carol Hood, Lois Iallusso, Martha Willdnson, Della Hartenstein Page Seventy five MODERN DANCE EVERY GIRL IS ELIGIBLE to belong to a modern dance club. Instruction is offered for beginners, terminating in auditions, with placement in various groups depending on the skill and effort of the individual. To attain Orchesis is the highest honor, for members of this group give dance demonstrations, create and develop origi- nal dances, and act as hostesses to observers. The five after-school dance groups practice diligently throughout the year and combine with the gym classes to present an annual spring concert. This concert gives the girls an opportunity to express. themselves through dance, as well as help with staging, choreography, and publicity, all of which make for a successful, well- attended concert-a tribute to the tireless direction of Mrs. Doll.
