me lC6lfl0l1 HIS volume of the Tartan the class book of the frrst senior class graduated from Clifford I Scott High School rs affectionately dedicated to Dr Clifford lohn Scott Superintendent of the East Orange Public Schools 19211936 as a testimonial of appreciation to a great teacher a friend of youth a sincere believer rn the efficacy of education rn removing the curse of ignorance ana one who helped make possible thrs high school completed and named rn hrs honor after hrs death rn 1936 Dr Scott was born rn Conneautvrlle Pennsylvania on May 14 1880 He attended Allegheny College graduatrng with honors rn 1903 He subsequently served as Super rntendent of Schools at Heynoldsvrlle and Uniontown Pennsylvania and Wil mrngton Delaware which latter positron he held for seven years rmrnedr ately prior to coming to East Orange While rn Delaware he was appointed a member of the State Board of Education serving as its President for three years He was also a Trustee of Delaware Unrversrty and a member of the Board of Managers of the State lndustrral School ln recognition of hrs fine contribution to education rn Delaware he was given the degree of Doctor of Pedagogy by Delaware University ln 1921 he was called to East Orange as efforts unsparrngly to the progressive improvement of the crty s school system its curriculum its health and related actrvrtres and the inauguration of the present Junior high school program During 1928 29 he assisted in the New lersey Educational Survey Commission being one of three members of the Survey Staff appointed to study New lersey schools Associated with numer ous educational organizations and movements he exercrsed a far reaching and stimulating influence rn state and national educational activities Hrs Christian character broad culture sympathetrc understanding of youth hrs trong personality wide experience and efficiency rn his chosen field of work and hrs uniform courtesy and kindly sprrrt made Dr Scott an outstand ng citizen and an unparalleled leader rn hrs community and rn hrs chosen profession The East Orange Public School System and thrs city are better and frner because ot hrs many contributions to them ln the hearts of all who came wrthrn the sphere of hrs influence there remarns for hrm a deep and enduring affection CHARLES A HEISS Superintendent of Schools and, during the fifteen years following, devoted his
