Smart On January 14, 1905 a child was born that was destined to have an incalculable effect on his neighbors in the Walled Laked area and in the whole State of Michigan. I am writing about Nlr. Clifford H. Smart, of course. Mr. Smart spent much of his energies in the formative years of the Walled Lake school district giving direction and purpose to the education of this communities' young. Along the way during these years he formed many friendships that will never be forgotten. He worked at the task at hand, but always allotted time for his family and their needs. After he had accomplished what he wanted to in the area of local educational growth he moved on to the State Capitol to further utilize his talents in the House of Representatives. In recent years he was the Minority Leader of the House, an honor he richly deserved. This past December 28, 1977 lVlr. Smart died in Florida where he was residing after his retire- ment from the House of Representatives. He is gone, but there is really no way to meas- ure the good this one man has done for us who have been fortunate enoughlto have benefited from his presence. I believe three words best describe lVlr. Thanks to the special help of the Student Council, the Odyssey staff put together a book that we are proud to bring to you. This book represents a lot of hard work both in time and energy spent making it. But to continually try to make improvements and at the same time keep the price reasonable is difficult. This is where the Student Council helped out: making funds available so that the cost of the Odyssey can stay low enough for everyone to enjoy. A very big and abrupt change took place in this year's Student Council, transforming itself into a new role of dignity and honor. The Council finally became what Mr. Schulkins, their tireless advisor, had always hoped it would become, a service organization. This means simply that not only did they set up the usual social activities like the dances, but they began actively involved in helping other groups in need fulfill their dreams. This yearbook could not have been enlarged or improved upon without the generous contribution made by the Student Council. The Council also helped the cheerleading squads earn money for one of their projects. Another group that received help was the Alternative House, a drug abuse center that used Student Council earned money to help young people get educated and counseled about themselves and drug use. Then there are the annual events sponsored by the Council: the Can Drive, food for people in need, and the Music Scholarship Fund that sends deserving students to music camp. So as you can see the CHS Student Council has come a long way from dances and bake sales to that of real community service. We at Smart are proud of our rep- resentatives who have found as much satisfaction in serving others as themselves. Clifford H. Smart' Sfudem' Council 1 l . The offense moved smoothly and rolled over many opponents. The defense was tough and hit very hard. But the heart of this year's team was team spirit. Every member of our team hustled and worked together. The team work was outstanding! Mr, Dean and Mr. Kopp would like to thank every Troian player for working so hard this sea- son. In our eyes these young men and their dedication truly make C. H. Smart No. 1! The Muir offense is forced to punt. l n Muir is stopped short by quick Trojan defense. Surrounded by defenders Jim Cooper gets the shot away. A losing attitude hurt Mr. B's Trojan unit early in the season, but as the team grew through their experiences this feeling was turned around. Always keeping up a strong man-to-man defensive effort the Trojans dropped many games by the margin of only 2 or 3 baskets. As they improved their shooting selection the breaks started coming their way. By the end of the season they were playing team basket- ball, the key to their late surge of wins. Mr. Binoniemi found the squad easy to coach and in every respect fine young men. He is confident that the Class of 82 will be strong in basketball in the up coming years. The game that has excited more people around the world than any other has finally made a strong bid in metro Michi- gan. With the Detroit Express, the new Silverdome based soccer team and the many leagues springing up all over, nobody could be happier about it than the Troians ot C.H.S. Why? Because the Trojans know the excitement of the end to end non-stop action, the thrilling one on one matehups, the passes, the kicks, the headers, the saves- 'and the goals, and always, always the teamwork. Both teams had fine seasons as the records show, but more important than winning was the desire just to play. They loved soccer. By seasons end every member on both teams had made a contribution to their team. Achievement and progress are key elements within a school that build pride and character. I knew the very day I arrived at C.I-I. Smart that there was outstanding potential within the stu- dent body. During the 197778 school year I have been impressed with the achievements of the sports teams, the well classroom projects that have been displayed around the the school social activities which have been attended and at which the behavior and cooperation has been excellent, main- taining a clean cafeteria and showing respect for one another's right to a relaxed, controlled and enjoyable lunch period, The musical talents of the students were always evident as I visited the chorus and band rooms. O .I ,.N Q I could go on and fill pages with the achievements and accom- plishments of our school, but the finest achievement I would like to compliment the students on is their friendliness. Friendliness is a quality that is sometimes forgotten in our society, but at C. H. Smart Junior High it is alive and well and practiced everyday. T' l U I ll. Kathy Hansen works on the winning yearbook cover. John Codere and Devany Donigan - good friends. This year we had some very good work to choose from for the yearbook cover, There were six finalists including Kathy Hansen, Rick Russell, Dori Weber, Mary Nelson, Jesica See, and Cindy Turnbull making the decision very difficult. We would like to thank all of the students who worked on the cover designsg you all did a really fine job. We would also like to give special thanks to Mrs. Wilcox and Mrs, Wassermann for their help on the cover. THE BIG EVENT The '77-78 year was a year of spectacular events. Star Wars became the biggest box office movie of all times. Starring the droids R202 and C-3PO. Jaws ate up the box office to be the second leading money maker in movie history. Alex Haley searched for his ancestors and Roots became the TV documentary of the year. Starring Levar Burton. Some of the favorite TV shows of the U.S. were: Three's Com- pany, Family, Soap and Eight Is Enough. Skateboards were the biggest thing next to Farrah Fawcet pos- ters. Farrah, one of CharIie's biggest angels, left the set in the middle of '77 and another angel, Cheryl Ladd, took her place. ln the music business Fleetwood Mac captured the ears of mil- lions with their new album Rumours. Then the Bee Gees with their hit from the movie Saturday Night Fever. Finally the little brother of the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, hit America with his single Love is Thicker Than Water. In the sports world some heroes were Roger Dodger Stau- bach and the Rookie of the Year Tony Dorsett who led the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl over Denver's Orange Crush. Reggie Jackson's three homeruns gave the New York Yankees top honors in the World Series. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame were rated 331 in college football after a victory over the Texas Longhorns. Seattle Slue won the triple crown in horse racing. Pele retired this year, and was the best soccer player ofthe century. There were records broken and new fabulous stars but there were tragedies too. The death of the King of Rock Elvis Pres' ley came suddenly and was followed by a boom of his records. There was also the deaths of: Hubert Humphrey - Bing Crosby -- Charlie Chaplin - Groucho Marx - the Three Stooges' Moe Howard - Joan Crawford and many more we'll all remem- ber, There were so many things that we could go on but we're sure that the ones we didn't put here will be remembered as much as the ones that were. Jim Cooper sets up a great play for Scott McKenzie. V' Q 2. 1 A71 J! f ' ..
