M ! n X x fi - Dick Owen y V -A ' 1 4.244-K' FREEDOM Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of listening to three men discuss our National and Foreign Policy, In this conversation I heard one man heavily criticize President Roosevelt. Eventually this same man brought the conversa- tion to our own community. His philosophy and speech did not change. He went so far as to mention names and openly criticize our communi- ty and its officials. Although his points were not agreed upon by the others, neverthe- less they were stated. HE WAS HIGHLY INSULTED BECAUSE WE DID NOT AGREE WITH HIM. I could not help but wonder while our friend was talking what would have happened him if in the presence of three witnesses he had similarly attacked Stalin, Hitler, or Mussolini Would he not have been instantly imprisoned, lf not hot at sunrise? I congratulated the gentleman that he lived in a country and community where he could freely and safely express his opinion of men in high offlce without fear of dire consequences, but I felt he should be the last one to wish to instill in others the right which he himself enjoyed sa ' Q , I 1 P g. A diploma will be thrust into our hands, and a me sage anchored to our hearts Thus gwe greet the dawn of a new life, a post schooling life where we are classified as men and women and treated accordingly, And that is the Gate that is Tonight' But what will follow in this new life? Who knews0 Who can say? Who can predict what the fu ture holds in store for us? That future 1S our trea ure chest, and it is not through prediction but only through exploring that we gain wisdom and un derstanding, pleasure and experience And so the answer to the question is silence We want no prognosticatien we want to live each day as it breaks and fades for it shall never break again Each day is one more grain of sand falling into Eternity, spelling out Life across the abyss of darkness Yesterday shall not return Pictures and diaries serve only to bring back memories more clear l but they too fade and die It has passed into 0 ivion forever, and all such efforts at regaining it are futile, And so it is with tonight. This ninth day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and forty one is slated to appear only ence upon the calendar And so it hall, and then, when it too has slipped away, there is no way of recalling it That is why we live for today. That is why I say we shall pas this way only once, Any good deed that we can do, therefore, any kind word that we can say, let us do it new, for we shall not pass this way again, Se with this thought in mind I welcome you here tonight, To you who have been to many graduations, including those of your own, this is nothing new, But to us it is. To us it is an era of awakening. And it gladdens our hearts and souls and bodies that by your attendance you have shown your interest in us who are living for tonight, fighting for every mo- ment that keeps us here, while the blood of life threbs through our veins, - Dick Owen qyf , , 'YY , I 1, 1 H 14, A ' Jr ss L.. Z CLASS HISTORY To all you gathered together here, in our honor, we find it only fitting and proper to recite to you the past history and the present status of this, the Senior Class of 1941. As freshmen we were composed of fourteen members, and it was said that we were the freshest Freshmen Class in the history of dear old C. H. S. We had something to live up to, and we did. That year we were on the receiv- ing end of every prank played and were accused of all the evil done. We laughed at our reputation for being bad, We knew it was our extreme vitali ty for which we have always been noted In our sophomore year we were re duced to ten members Also we assumed a more dignifled behavior We still led the school by our pep and zeal e were proud to have two of our members, Bill Davis and Sam Lang, on the foot ball team, and just as proud to have several sophomole girls on the first team in basketball Also that year three of our girls were elected maids for the May Day festival. The boys' counter attack to this bit of publicity was made by placing a sophomore boy, Dick Owen, on the annual staff as sports editor' Our Junior year started out with list of lorries much longer than the list of courses we were taking, We were till active in all line of activ ities, sports, program , detention hall and last, and sometimes least, studies . . And now came the time to erase the largest worry from our list, We were going to give the Seniors a banquet. We had a nautical theme and altogether a very gay affair. We ate, we sang, we laughedg we looked beautiful and we were merry. After the banquet there was the Junior-Senior dance: net re- sults were sore feet, torn clothing, sleepy eyes and a big cleaning job. After all this had been accomplish- ed, we felt ready, yes, my dear friends actually ready to be called Senlors of Clewlston High School Our most impor tant struggle thi year has been to maintain a certain amount of dignity Sam Lang was elected captain of the football team and Dlck Owen, editor of the Annual Queen Margaret and King Sam relgned on hay Day On our picnlc, as you probably saw by the papers, we took Miami by storm' Perhaps the most exciting event of the year was the banquet and dance the Junior gave us It was really a delightful event And so, dear friends, you find us tonight after we have passed our last examination, fought our last battle, anxiously awaiting our diplomas We ve mixed work and play, but our time is H , and we leave this, our history of t e Class of '41 Julia Ann Oglesby 'Y 1931! xv' if ,Q ' ' Q . 0 ' ., S 3 ' ' 5 ' ' L f ' ' 0 , 1 r Q , Z I : . For many years we have looked forward to the time when we would be Juniors in high school. During the first few weeks of school we elected class officers as follows: President, Junior Waters, Vice President, Beulah Guthrie, Secretary and Treasurer, Edna Leiter. Later we decided that the news of this Junior class should be known, so Louise Roath was elected News Repor- ter. We were anxious for the Junior-Senior Ban- quet and Dance--not thinking of the work there was to it. Ne began the first month of school to plan and work toward the Banquet by increasing our cla s trea ury Our flrst activlty of the year wa a dance which added H1lttlGu to our treasury, When the American Leglon held 1ts annual Carnlval, the Juniors were Plghf there with a hamburger joint Since this did not net us enough, we put on a Square Dance, and after pulling together ln mak ing the plan , it went over with a band' Then came the two main events the Junior Senior Banquet and Dance, We hustled arou d and made the tickets for the dance a month ahead of time The banquet, which carried out the Dutch theme, was held at the Clewiston Inn on May 25, 1941, at 8 o'clock Afterwards the Dance started and our antlcipatlon was a realization We really had a great year Charles and Louise S S , . .
