Administration DR. C. E. CLEVENGER The Hickory unit of Clevenger College was founded in April, 1943 by C. E. Clevenger with an enrollment of 7 students. By April 1944 the enrollment had grown to 70 students and had moved from the old First National Bank Building on Union Square to the third floor of the Hollar Building. During the years of 1944 and 1945 the school was headed by Mr. W. W. Howell. On January 1, 1946, Mr. Clevenger returned from war services to find an enrollment of only 19. With one teacher and nineteen students Mr. Clevenger undertook the difficult task of re¬ building the institution. Soon the school was approved for the training of veterans under theG. I. Bill of Rights. Enrollment gradually increased, new equipment was purchased and more teachers added to the staff. By early 1948 students were be¬ ing turned away for lack of space. The present quarters were secured during the summer of 1951. At present there are more than 300 students with a teaching staff of 18. The North Wilkesboro unit had its beginning in October 1947 as an outgrowth of a Dale Carnegie Class in Public Speaking, held at the Carolina Restaurant in North Wilkesboro. With the cooperation of the North Wilkesboro Chamber of Commerce, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and many other fine citizens of the Wilkesboros, the college formally opened its doors to 52 students and a staff of three teachers on January 5, 1948. The enrollment now stands at more than 100 with a staff of 5. A unit of Clevenger College began in Lenoir in September 1955 with an enroll- ment of 75. Quarters were located on the corner of Mulberry Street and College Avenue, near downtown Lenoir. Avery rapid growth under the supervision of Mrs. Ralph Ostrom has resulted in a present enrollment of some 200 students with 9 staff members. The latest addition to the Clevenger unit was Marion, beginning in June 1956 with some 50 students. This well equipped school located in the business section of Marion has made wonderful progress. The enrollment has morethan doubledand now has a staff of 4. Mr. Roy Kel¬ ly has been the dean since its inception.
