Shocked and angered by the tragic kill¬ ing of four Kent State students by Ohio National Guardsmen on May 4, many students went on strike. As a result, many colleges were forced to close. Cleveland State University, however, man¬ aged to keep its doors open due in great measure to the untiring efforts of President Harold Enarson. He will be admired and remembered by CSU students as a man possessing a great deal of sympathy, un¬ derstanding, and leadership in time of crisis. 18 I Board of Trustees J. J. Nance Chairman C. L. Colonna shows fancy-footwork against Michigan State. 3. Two-time All-Ohio and All Midwest forward Vito Colonna takes a pass from Mattei against St. Louis. 4. Colonna shows he doesn ' t give a ... for the whole state of Michi¬ gan. He fakes Tonto out here. 185 1. Hotzy deflects the shot over the cross bar against St. Louis. Unfortunately, he couldn ' t clear them all over and the Vikings lost a heartbreaker, 2-1, in the NCAA Midwest Finals. St. Louis went on to win the NCAA Championship. At the left of Hotzy is Rosati, while at the right are fullback Rony Joel, fullback Tiho Teisl and Colonna. 2. Son of a gun, we did it. The Vikings Fullback line (Rosati, Szeker, Joel and Teisl) plus Mattei congratulate each other on their 3-0 victory over Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. 2 186 mmmarn Basketball FRONT ROW, left to right: Joe Greene, Dave Gidich, Jerry Pavlas, Mike Campbell, Mike Guilfoyle and Kevin Lineberger. Lee placed fifth in the nation. 1. Pete Ivkovic sits out and thus earns a one point es¬ cape in the 118 1b. bout against Akron. A former high school state champion from Eastlake North, Pete fin¬ ished 6-1-1 in his freshman year despite knee prob¬ lems. 2. Ivkovic uses the wheelbarrow on his adversary from Wayne State. Pete eventually pinned him. 3. Senior Co-captain Mark Lapsevich ' s face shows grimace as he attempts to set up his 1 50 lb. opponent from Wayne State for a pin. It was Mark ' s final match. CSU ' s winningest wrestler won easily, 9-0. 4. Marwan Hishmeh (158 lbs.) puts his Camel Clutch ' on a Wayne State wrestler, thus accumulat¬ ing riding time. Marwan was the fourth wrestler Cleveland State used at the injury riddled 1 58 lb. class and did a good job. A fast moving wrestler with great countermoves, Marwan finished the season with a 2-2-1 mark. 5. Referee Tony Natale gives Co-Captain Dwain Ki- bler two points for a predicament against Ball State in the 126 lb. match. Dwain pinned him a few seconds later. Despite the fact that he suffered badly injured ribs all season, Dwain won seven of his eight matches that he was able to participate in. He is one of the best in the country at getting to his base. 1 4 192 193 194 1. Heavyweight Paul Azzariti crashes all 285 lbs. into his opponent from Wayne State. 2. Referee Chuck Burger indicates the fact that Paul must push Wayne State heavyweight ' s shoulder one more inch in order to get the pin. Azzariti didn ' t pin him in this series, but hip-tossed him a few seconds later (after Wayne ' s heavy¬ weight escaped) for his five point win. 4. Ashland ' s 190 lb. wrestler rides senior Ernie Klechka. Ernie closed out his four year tenure at Cleveland State by shutting out his last three op¬ ponents. 5. 134 lb. sensation Frank Yoo works his version of the cradle on his opponent from Wayne State. A sophomore, Frank won 10 of his 11 matches and has a two year record of 18-1. Frank is an ex¬ cellent leg wrestler. 6. Lapsevich has his opponent up in the air won¬ dering what Mark is going to do with him. Mark made the decision for him. He used the legal ver¬ sion of the body slam for two points. Cleveland State ' s wrestling team, which was na¬ tionally ranked, won nine matches against two losses. Coached by Dick Bonacci, the Bombers ' ' finished with their worst record in five years, but this team was potentially the best CSU has ever had. 6 Fencing Cleveland State ' s fencing team finished with a record of 3-9, and it was a rebuilding year for Coach John Szent Kira- lyi. Nonetheless, the team had three outstanding perform¬ ers. In the epee, Al Centa had a fine 23-13 record. In the foil, Bob Nagorney impressed with a 24-12 mark. In the sabre, Dan McCormick had a good year with 23-13. 1. Left to right, the fencing team was comprised by Mark Schultz, Dan McCormick, Richard Kassouf, Jerry Smith, Coach John Szent Kiralyi, Andy Brouse, Bob Nagorney, Gary Krall and Al Centa. 2. Freshman Andy Brouse in action with the epee. Brouse had a record of nine wins against twenty losses but gained badly needed experience. 196 Cross Country Indoor Track Cleveland State ' s fine cross country team, which won eight out of ten meets and placed 1 7th in the nationals, consisted of: KNEEL¬ ING, left to right: John Warcholic, Bob Pavlas, Pat Greener, Jerry Phillips, Frank Sereika, Brady Dean, Felix Rendina, Frank LaMarca and Jim Stewart. Senior sprint star Dashing Dave Lee cakewalks to a lengthy victory as part of the Cleveland State relay team against Wayne State and Ohio Northern. Lee has run the 100 yd. dash in :09.6. ' 200 Swimming A Cleveland State s swimming team had only a 1-12 won-loss record due primarily to the fact that there was no depth on the team. Many of the swimmers had to participate in three ' events, and swimming in two is taxing enough on one s strength. 1. Members of the swimming team of 1970 were: FRONT ROW, left to right: Ed Kraus, Eric Russu, Steve Bogas and Don Remle. Slugging sophomore third baseman Ron Kencson was yet another of the many Viking .300 hitters. Kencson hit one homer and drove in nine runs. 4. Don Yates swinging away at a bad ball against Youngstown. Players claim he can kill a bad pitch, but has trouble with balls right over the plate. 5. Left handed relief ace Carl Hoerig led the staff with a 1.61 ERA, winning five games as opposed to only one loss. Hoerig fanned 32 in 39 innings, while allowing only seven walks. He was a freshman. 6. Junior catcher Ed Kostyack gets set to catch pitcher Yates ' curve ball. Kostyack hit .313 with two homers and 11 rbi ' s. 205 The golf team was an outstanding collection of freshmen and seniors who compiled a 21 -5 won loss record, the best ever for Cleveland State. For their efforts, the team was invited to the NCAA championships. 1, 2. Freshman Joe Haase displays his picture pretty swing with an iron. Joe had an average per round of 78.2. 3. Freshman John Zolnay putts well enough to have recorded a 70 for one round last season, which was a Cleveland State rec¬ ord. 4. Freshman Randy Melocik was another of the many talented golfers. Melocik averaged 78.5 strokes per round in his initial season. 5. Freshman Chris Leyshock prepares to hit a wedge out of a sand trap. Leyshpck showed prqmise with a 79.0 average. 6. Senior Mike Lubin hits a 3-wood off the fairway. A truly out¬ standing putter, Mike had an average of 78.0 per round. Pictured in the FRONT ROW, left to right, are Coach Joe Stipcic, Bruce Colosimo, Joe Hlosek, Co-Captain Tom MacKar, Co¬ captain Ted Sowa and Laszlo Paroczy. Pictured in the SECOND ROW, left to right, are John Buehner, Fred Weiss, Louie Bernhardt, Ed Cmarik, and Giles Falinski. Pictured in the BACK ROW are Ihor Kowalysko, Tom Tylicki and John Dobritch. Junior varsity sports have been added to the basketball, wrestling and baseball teams for the upcoming seasons. The junior varsity basketball team will be comprised of freshmen only. In past seasons the freshmen have been allowed to play on the varsity, but since most college powers do not allow freshmen to play on the varsity, Cleveland State, aiming for big time basketball ranking, will do likewise. Although the wrestling team had enough wrestlers to comprise a junior varsity team last season, only Buffalo State, of all the other opponents, had a junior varsity team. However, the JV wrestlers will wrestle four teams for certain next season (Cuyahoga Community College home and away, Boise Junior College in Pennsylvania, and Buffalo State), and perhaps two others. Baseball likewise has a surplus of talent and will continue a junior varsity program started last season, but hopefully on a larger scale. 208 Tennis ' .J a ’ ' ' ■ ' v - 1 ' JaS f: ' 4m Ipip m • , t£y-T ■, 1 , ■ , yar ■ t The tennis team, coached by Bill Clarke, completed the 1970 season with five wins as opposed to nine losses, but at least three of these losses were by one point. 1 . Ginty Auginas, a senior from Cathedral Latin but a rookie on the tennis team, loses his hat in an effort to re¬ turn a shot with a backhand stroke. Auginas compiled three wins against seven losses in singles action. 2. Junior tennis star Doug Neu shows good form in back- handing the ball. Neu was 8-6 in singles action, and teamed up with senior John Hirsh for a 1 0-3 record in dou¬ bles play, good enough to get an NCAA invitation. 3. Chuck Habjan, freshman from St. Joseph, had a respect¬ able 6-8 mark in the singles. 4. Junior Don Cairns, playing in his first season for CSU, smashes his serve. Cairns won two and lost five of his singles matches. Other team members: Senior John Hirsh, junior Rick Klein, sophomore Jim Nagy and freshman Bob Banville.
