. .. z his v. ,ti 'Nhigh ,Mi si-V31 Mr. Edwards Retires After Years of Service Mr. Jonathan W. Edwards, Siperindendent of Portland Public Schools since 1953, is retiring this year after a distinguished career in education. Mr. Edwards had fine preparation for his years of service. Graduated from Whitman College in 1917 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, he secured his first position as a teacher of history and an athletic coach at Lincoln High School in 1924. By 1927 he had attained the position of head of the History Department at Grant High School. During this time he continued his education, receiving his Master of Arts Degree in 1932 from the University of Oregon. In 1936 he became the Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He held this position until 1944 when he was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Schools. It was in August, 1953 that he was elected Superintendent of Schools. Whitman College made him an honorary Doctor of Education the next year. Mr. Edwards has done much for the Portland Public School system. His retirement comes as a great loss Miss Labor Leaves C1eveland's Administrative Department For many years, Miss Labor has been guiding Cleveland's schol- astic endeavors as Curriculum Vice-Principal. Few realize or appreciate what a complicated job this is and what responsibility it includes. Miss Labor has been the controlling factor behind the ability of Cleveland's curriculum to prepare students for the problems they will face in later life. It is designed to aid the students who are planning towork after high school as well as those who are college botmd. Miss Labor's efforts to improve the educational opportunities available to Cleveland students have made her an indispensable part of the Administrative Department. Her retirement is a great 105-S: it will be very difficult to find another. 10 which will not soon be replaced. -,. .4 '-
