Not Pictured: Hiroshi Katayama, Ann Kloosterman CHRISTMAS PARTY The Special Class for Non-English Speaking Students began in Couch School. From there it was moved to Lincoln High School and after several years, to Cleveland. This year, the class has representatives from ten countries: japan, China, Syria, Denmark, Ger- many, Yugoslavia, Italy, Greece, Holland, and Argentina. Most of these people register in Room 321, spend two or three periods there, according to their needs, and participate in regular classes requiring a minimum of language. In the home room, there are beginning, inter- mediate, and advanced levels. Each student may advance at his own rate according to his previous background, ability, and effort. I-Ie receives help in speech, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, social studies, and health. As soon as he is able to participate in regular sophomore English classes, he is given credit for E 1-2 and SS 1-2, and excused from the special class. The students in this room have many good times, with monthly parties, singing periods, discussion groups, special talent programs, field trips, and their own chapter of International Club. jffz ,4 fwffff ff X SERWLCXE AQFIYITIES gg, - L--.i.H,bu.s..4 ,.- -, n. ,. - . 1f'.n..-.M q U K.. ,...M, .J 44. ,... , . .. 21- ... ADVISOR AND CO-EDITORS Blotter The Blotter has scored a series of firsts this year. It published an issue the opening day of school, it had three six-page papers during the year, it entered competition for All-American press rat- ing, and it was active in organizing the Portland Scholastic Press Association. The Blotter also adopted a more modern print for headlines, and carried an abundance of advertising on its pages. Eighteen seniors and six juniors served on this year's staff. Fall Co-editors. . Davies The Dad's Club has worked on several projects this past year in furthering the educational program of Cleveland High School. The Father-daughter Banquet in February was a huge success, as was the fall sports banquet forpathletes. To encourage scholastic endeavor, the Dad's Club again awarded cups, cash awards, and certificates of merit to outstanding students. The programs and meetings during the year were again interesting and well attended. PTA The P.T.A. under the leadership of Mrs. Henry Sholkoff, has enjoyed an interesting and stimulating year. The programs have been varied, ranging from guest speakers to a fashion show pro- gram on Founder's Day. Among projects undertaken this year was a scholarship program for a senior interested in the teaching professiong a bazarg and a joint meeting with the Dad's Club. The P.T.A. has been of invaluable aid in furthering understand- ing of the aims and problems of educating students among parents and teachers. 76 Amikki Amikki's purpose is to promote friendship within the trips, sales, its annual Christmas Formal and other club and throughout the school. They opened the season against Medford, after a well fought game, Medford came out on top 6-0. In the annual Jamboree the Indians played Benson, defending champions, and were the only team to score. This game ended in a 30-0 victory, which gave them a terrific start in the league. The next game was against Roosevelt and the 106 final score was a heartbreaking 12-14. A loss to Lincoln was followed by a tie with Grant. The team raised its league standing to a 2-2-1 record by de- feating Franklin. The Democrats then upset the Indians with a 2 1-0 win, but the tribe ended on a vic- torious note by crushing Washington, 27-6. The team finished in fourth place in the city league and two players placed on the All-City Team: Morrie Arntson an Larry Capri. With twelve scalps at their belts, the Indians picked up their wigwams and moved to Eugene. They galloped into the semi-finals as a result of victories over Baker and St. Helens. The Cleveland Indians thrilled the state tournament with two overtimes against St. Helens and Central Catholic. The 47-46 win over Central put the Indians into third place in the State Basketball Tour- nament. Even though the Indians lacked height, they had a tremendous amount of speed. Excellent ball handling and long set shots were shown by the two little men of the team, Eric Petersen, on the All-City Second Team, and Harvey jones, honorable mention. Dick Jolley. an outstanding forward and top individual scorer in the city, won for his second year a unanimous position on the All-City Team and a spot on the All- State Team. One strategic trademark that the Cleveland Indians acquired this year was their ability to stall. This proved a deciding factor in the win over Franklin when they stalled six minutes and thirty seconds. There were three outstanding factors which con- tributed to making the Indians a championg their ability to work together as a team, the very able coach- ing of Mr. Al Negratti, and all the players were return- ing lettermen from last year, with the exception of three who came up from the j.V. The Indians made an exceptional showing during the pre-season games, winning six and losing two, while playing the top teams of the state. The students of Cleveland High School are very proud of their champion Indians. The team and student body have shown a fine display of good sportsmanship, through the combined leadership efforts of Mr. jackson, Mr. Negratti, and the spirited rally squad. 111 2 . .
