PTA President This year Cleveland High School welcomed a new principal, Mr. Rein E. laclcson, and the Parent-Teacher Asso- ciation and the Dad's Club were combined hosts at a reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. lackson. The PTA not only had a profitable rummage sale, but successfully presented something new, a Chinese Dinner to raise funds for the additional scholarship to be given this year. Two scholarships amounting to S240 will be contrib- uted by the PTA to graduates of the class of l953. This year the Dadf s Club achieved their fourth successful year of organization at Cleveland. Among their many projects benefitting the school were-the presentation of the Girls' Athletic Association Awards and the annual Scholarship Cup Awards. They also sponsored the Football Banquet in the fall and the Fathers' and Sons' Spring Sports Banquet, both of which were held in the school social rooms. The Dad's Club furnished entertainment at a joint meeting with the PTA early in March, at which they heard an outstanding speaker. The earnest hope of both groups for the future is that an even stronger bond will exist between the faculty, the PTA, the Dad's Club, and the community. 62 ,'-iff'-x fEl,i--li 1 ffilf' i' iii Qi:-ff: -irliir--My zififlfiiiflllv .: E: -- -rw iifssifrsfi-it-rr-1 I? ,.lf,.iTff' f'lk5E:g5g5?f5m iilsiflliijfigigilfi .f,,-553575, is I gasmif'-2 L i::r:'w2w1s ' - -fv,wi:er .. :-, : 511122:iwirrf-'ravi , f1.s2z,ss1s23ggggrg, -fZ Q 1 e..,, 4225,Q??m:ff':2r,:gg:QzL' 1 h-'1g17Elv.w,i1ez .A-'serine ss S 57.lfiflf53e?::Q-'gg-raw, '1i,Tf9'L1'gJf -2gg :Ziif?II5i'Lsi: r c Sil gffliiifit' f1e,rsfQ.W-Weiwf fr-'iw'--'I 'mu ,g27ei4efmws E1 we--'-4 2:4 ref:- egdx g O F F I C E R S President KEITH HARCOURT Vice-President DOUG HOUSER Segfeiqfy' SHIRLEY Treasurer ARLENE KRAUSS The Cleveland High School chapter ot the National Honor Society is an honorary for juniors and seniors. The Indians began their schedule by whipping Salem, their first win in three sea- sons. They followed with two straight wins over league opponents, Roosevelt and Washington. Then the Indians were struck by a severe case ot ''breaks-going-against'em'' and lost three straight games. They dropped a heart-breaker to Franklin, even though outplaying them the entire game, and were soundly trounced by Grant and Ieiterson. However the Indians regained their poise and wound up the regular season with decisive victories over Benson and Lincoln. The overall season record was tive wins and three losses. They had a tour won, three lost record in league play, good enough for a third place tinish in the city. Coach Shovlin loses ten seniors by gradua- tion, but has 25 lettermen upon which to build next years squad. The Indian squad was highly regarded when the all-city teams were chosen. Ron Stempel was placed on the first team at quarterback. Named on the second string were center Larry Hail and end Bill Stempel, juniors, as were halfback Dwight Urnbarber and tackle Ray Giansante, seniors.. Coach lim Norton's charges battled through two tough rounds of seven games each and finally annexed the title with a record of ten won and four lost. Through the first round, the Indians ripped through all opposition except Roosevelt and Iefferson. The final seven games saw Cleve- land defeating everyone but Benson and Roosevelt. Thus the Indians, who also had an outstanding pre- season record of six and two, had fulfilled the early season predictions. Their record was a creditable sixteen won and six lost. Cleveland journeyed to the state tournament at Eugene, and wound up in seventh spot by winning two and losing two. The Indians topped Lakeview in the first start, were upset by Dallas, went on to edge out Salem, and finally lost to Central Catholic. On the all-city squad, Cleveland placed two men.
