Today Portland is unique in pos- sessing within a very short distance of its business district those same hills, still studded with evergreens, affording a breathtaking panorama of the city and valley, with beautiful mountains in the background. On those hills, today, however, are located thousands of the homes of the city's residents. Portland is still a city of sharp contrasts of the old and the new, but many of the old familiar landmarks are rapidly giving way to progress. One of the most recent to yield to change was the Clinton Kelly house, which was closely associated with the history of our school, and therefore, it was felt that it should properly be incor- porated in the cover of this, the Centennial Edition. --Courtesy Oregon State Highway Commission 4 'a'A', T C X g The drawing on lhv oppnsilp pngv shows typirul honms of the pimlfwr period und present-day Portland. For the first time in the history of the Blotter, members of the staff have all completed a course in Journalism. This has resulted in a better paper, using the rules of newspaper writing. Printing costs have eliminated the use of as many pictures as the staff would like to have used. The Blotter was one of the nine entries chosen to represent Oregon in the l4th annual school press project of the National Tuberculosis and Health association. lt also received honorable mention for an outstanding story on the Erb Memorial Student Union at the Uni- versity of Oregon in the Oregon State Press Bulletin. - The Blotter won second place honors in the l95l newspaper im- provement contest sponsored by the Oregon Scholastic Press. 2 ' ' l.:,.L. el-to da!! ic tm-U -.rn-.fl Douglas Gripp, Miss Westhoff, Phyllis Bowen. fs., , a.. - rf, D-4 ,.f , .il 'i .1 -- us- ...- Gary Rousseau' Darlene Boum- Back Row: Vada Evans, Richard Spooner, Jack Fenton. Being on the staff means hard work and long hours but also a lot of fun. Something that is new in the Legend this year is the student directory, where you will find a list of all the students and the pages where their pictures are found. Also new are the plastic covers that the staff has intro- duced for sale this year for the protection of the book.
