-- 6111.95 Prophecy ' i ,4- f 3,2 5 I hurrted up the steps to the apartment Ruby and I shared together on F1fth Avenue Thls was the day we had been looklng forward to for many months because thls was the day we would grab our bags and head for North Carolma and home sweet home We hurr1edly ate and were soon ln a cab on our way to La Guardla Field to board a plane for home As we stepped 1nto the plane who should we see but Jack Galllher as the p1lot of the plane wlth Jacquelxne Lloyd as h1s stewardess Imust admltl wasn t too pleased w1th the ldea at flrst as I had never dreamed of Jack becomxng a pxlot and always felt a wee b1t unsafe wh1le 1n a plane anyway But when I got settled down wlth a magazlne I soon forgot my worrles Whlle glancxng through the plctures IH the magazme I found that Bonn1e Goodman was now an art1st for Tlme Magazme She certamly had done well for herself I had been so mterested IH the magazlne that I hadn t not1ced any of the passengers aboard untll someone tapped me on the shoulder Glanclng up I saw Lleutenants Jerry Sudderth and Carlton Myers standlng there w1th the same brlght sm1les I remembered them by 1n h1gh school They were now both lnstructors at an army base IH New Jersey My' Th1s was a pleasant surprise It just made me feel at home to see my old class mates and they seemed to know qulte a b1t about our school chums s1nce they got furloughs rather often They told me that wh1le taklng tra1n1ng at Fort Jackson South Carolxna they had met up w1th LO1S Smlth and Jo Hendrlx who were statroned w1th the Wacs there It seemed that Jerry Cauble had stuck to h1s much desxred amb1t1on of becomxng a baseball player and was now a f1rst baseman for the Card1nals Eddle Pennell who had attended State College and taught 1n several dlfferent schools was now the coach at Cleveland Hxgh Bllly Moore and Ph1l1p Kepley are both happlly marr1ed now Bllly 15 kept pretty busy as an englneer for the Southern Ra1lway and Ph1l1p owns and operates a sportlng goods store You m1ght know he would Just have to be 1n the ball buszness one way or Joe Mowery IS employed by a Constructlon Company and Harry Hxpp and Gerald Shoaf are now busy harvestmg and plantmg two of the largest farms around Cleveland They d1dn t seem to know much about the g1rls The co prlot came by tell1ng us to fasten our safety belts because we had to make an emergency landxng IH Washxngton D C The plane had developed eng1ne trouble and we would have to stay there for two hours lt was nearly dmner t1me and we were both star ved so we left the a1rport and went up street to a nearby restaurant to eat Enter1ng the door we saw two famxhar faces Irene W1lhelm and Nora Lee Beaver We had lunch w1th them and they told us how much they were enjoymg the1r work wxth the F B l They told us Betty Albrxght 15 a secretary 1n a large lnsurance f1rm here 1n Wash1ngton and Phylhs Myers IS a typlst 1n one of the newspaper offices Betty Cashlon and Peggy Gatton had V1Slt6d them the week before wh1le Betty was on vacat1on from her Job as recept1omst at Long s Hosp1tal Peggy also works as a nurse there l thought how tlme flxes Our two hours were almost up so we sa1d our goodbyes and went back to the plane for the last lap of our tr1p home Soon we landed 1U Charlotte Aga1n we had to walt several hours before the bus left for Cleveland As lt happened we had Mary Ahce Phxfer s and Peggy Gentle s address w1th us so we looked them up They seemed to be enjoymg the1r work as telephone operators They told us that Iva Lee Redman was now a nurse at Mercy Hosp1tal Barbara Jean Lye rly and Anne Powlas are the only two teachers we have from our class of 53 Anne IS teachlng at Boyden and Barbara Jean at Cannon I-hgh ln Kannapolls Wxlma Plyler 15 head cashxer at Ketner s Super Market and Ellzabeth Wensll 1S Home Demonstratmon agent for Forsyth County Kathryn Steele had just returned from a trxp abroad do1ng mlssxonary work She was gn mg a lecture at one of the churches 1U Charlotte that nxght wh1ch Mary Alxce and Peggy were plannxng to attend Several of our classmates had decxded on marrlage mstead of a career Sarah P1nk ston IS now Mrs Bobby Godbey She 15 also workmg part tlme at Guyes Betty Lou Betty Graham ns now Mrs Cllfford Shuemaker and the mother of three lovely chlldren Ruth Powlas IS marr1ed to Hubert Pr1vette and has a lovely daughter who attends Wlllle Mae Graham s school of dancmg ln Sal1sbury lt seemed only yesterday that our vacat1on began and now xt was tlme to get back to the hustle and bustle of New York Cmty The past two weeks were two of the shortest weeks of my lxfe and also two of the most enjoyable because all the preczous memorles of 53 were brought back to me agam Our classmates certa1nly seemed to have used our motto Forward Ever Backward Never because all of them have certamly made a success of thexr chosen professrons Cla ss Prophet Dot Campbell Z 'N' ,vxv- .
