Zion, Shiloh, and Polenta Schools had an election to consolidate their small schools into a large school. A tract of land across the road from Oakland Church was purchased to build the school. In the fall of 1926, our school was finished. It was named Cleveland because it was in Cleveland township. At that time the building was just the straight part across the front. Since then we have had two wings, the east and west, added. For several years after the school opened, the teachers lived in the school building. They used the council room for a living room. Mrs. Stephenson's, Mr. Allen's, and Mr. Bowman's rooms were used for the ladies bed rooms. The science lab was the principal's room. The lunch room was used as their kitchen and dining room. For the first three years, the seniors were sent to Clayton School to graduate. They drove an old Ford that was fumished by the county. In the fall of 1930 Cleveland School began to grow. Pupils from other districts started to come to our school. Since then pupils from Pleasant Grove, part of Elevation, a small part of Smithfield, and a small part of Clayton townships have come to Cleveland. June 5. 1931, we had our first graduating class. There were thirteen in that class, four girls and nine boys. These graduates were Thelma Bames, Vivian Wrenn. Margaret Wright, Estelle Williams, Jack Hawks, Valmore Parrish, Grimes Stephenson, Leon Stevens, John Lassiter, George Tomlinson, Boyd McGee, Marvis Stephenson, and Norma Stephenson. The first graduating class was the smallest, and in 1956 it had one of the largest. There have been seven principals at Cleveland. Mr. Teryall was here in 1926-27. Mr. George Smith was here from 1927 to 1931. Mr. George Strickland was here from 1931 to 1940. Mr. N.G. Woodlief was here from 1940 to 1955. Mr. John Walker came to our school in 1955. He stayed here until November of 1957. Mr. E.J. Boyette was the principal of our school for the remainder of the year. Mr. E.T. Benton became principal of our school in 1958. In the past few years we have had a new agriculture building and a new gym added to our school. We have had many other improvements made, such as a new road, side walks, improvements in the lunch room, science lab, and in the Home Ec. department. In 1955 we had a P.T.A. organized that has really been a growing one-one that wants to help make our school one of the best in the country. 6 Jn Mr. Bruce Coats To you, Mr. Coats, we dedicate the 1969 edition of The Ram, because you are as much a part of Cleveland as the school itself. This is a small token to show you that we appreciate the dedication that you have shown to our school and to us throughout all of our school years. To you, Mr. Coats, the Class of '69 expresses their sincere thanks for setting us a good example and giving us the guidance to follow it. 7 Mrs. Mina Johnson Higgins December 15, 1885-August 11, 1964 One who devoted most of her life to the teaching of children both in the public schools as well as in the church school. l, 8 Miss Una Jane Brogden May 3, 1900-August 3. 1968 She gave herself to her first grade students. We will soon go up those winding stairs, To face the world alone- Knowing that together We've laughed, we've learned and we've g We'll go down the aisle togetherg Then we'll go our separate ways. Leaving only the memories- Of good old Cleveland days. Joy Coats I'OWI1 'gleam' I surely am glad that we took shorthand in school, because it surely comes in handy now. Just think. when we were in the first grade, we didn't even know shorthand existed. We were thrilled when we managed to learn the alphabet. Can you imagine the task our teachers had trying to teach fifty-four students to write their names! Why, half of us didn't even know our names. Yes, and in the third grade, I had enough ice-cream to last a lifetime. Oh! But did we get the high head in the fourth. fifth, and sixth grades. Changing classes really boosted our morales. We finally were ac- complishing something. In the eighth grade, we certainly received our share of discipline. I bet the grounds at Cleveland never have been as clean as we kept them. We had to pick up paper almost twice a day. That's true. but we always seemed to keep in mind that the next year we would be freshmen. No one can say that we weren't prepared for the ninth grade. the question was-was the ninth grade prepared for us? They may have called us green freshmen but we ripened in a hurry. Yes, that year, Sherry, you and Beverly Johnson were on the Varsity Basketball team. That's right, and you and four more girls were on the J.V. team. Let's see, they were Bonnie Byrd, Cathy Pope, Pam Ennis, and Jo Ellen Pope. Remember how thrilled the boys were to really be on a basketball team? Almost all the boys went out for J.V. There were twelve of them: Tyra Langdon, Troy Pope, Jimmy Ryals, J.M. West, Lyle Trader, Jimmy Benson, Mike Coats, Reid Stephenson, Chester Ennis, Mit- chell Langdon, Richard Bridges. and Randy Stephenson. Don't forget that Sherry Dupree and Elaine Stephenson were chosen to cheer. Our class really turned out to be very athletic! As Freshmen, we soon realized that every class needs leaders and we were no exception. Who were our class officers? Reid Stephenson was Reporter: Lyle Trader, Secretary: Ray McGee, Vice-President, Elaine Stephenson, Treasurerg and Sherry Dupree was our President. Then we became silly Sophomores. We were climbing higher on the ladder of success, but still we hadn't reached our goal. That year several became members of the Beta Club. They were: Dawn Grimes, Sherry Dupree, Reid Stephenson, and Chester Ennis. This was a great honor for them because they were chosen for outstanding achievement, character, and leadership. Yes, and it also meant a possibility of no exams. Several of our athletic classmates became members of the Monogram Club that year also. They were: Sherry Hardee, Beverly Johnson, Sherry Dupree, Elaine Stephenson. Ray McGee, and Tyra Langdon. Our class officers as Sophomores were: Lyle Trader, President: Sherry Hardee, Secretary: Judy Stephenson, Treasurer: Ray McGee, Vice-President: and Tyra Langdon, Reporter. I'll never forget the fun we all had as Juniors while fixing the gym for the Prom. It really turned out to be a blast. Everyone was quite surprised at the excellent job that we did. We could not have done such a fine job if we hadn't had the expert advice of Miss Hatcher. She made things all that much better. Our class officers as Juniors were: Charlene, President: Dawn Grimes, Treasurer: Sherry Coats, Secretaryg Chester Ennis, Reporter: and Ray McGee, Vice'President. Then we finally reached one of our many goals. We were Seniors at last. Most people associate Seniors with the word sophistication. At first. in our Senior year, we all realized we weren't as sophisticated as we thought. We realized we had a lot of growing up to do but we all managed before the year was over to become so-called sophisticated Seniors. Our last year was certainly one full of excitement and fun as well as work. Finally February arrived and we received our class rings. That was only one highlight of our Senior year but it was one long waited for. As the end of school began to arrive. we had second thoughts about being on our own. Graduating wasn't such a wonderful thing after all when we thought of making decisions ourselves. f'Then the big event occurred-graduation! We all were very excited but deep down there was that feeling of sadness. After going to the same school with the same people for twelve years, one really hates to leave. We'd never have thought we'd ever feel that way when we were in the sixth grade. At that age, our main objective was to get out of school as soon as we could. That's true, graduation has been some time now. I wonder what our companions are doing. Didn't you read about Randy Stpehenson in the paper last week? No, what did he do? C Why, he is the leader of a hippie demonstration in California. He stated in the paper that he really didn't believe in what the Hippies were doing but it sounded like fun to him, so he tried it. Beverly and Pam are happily married. so I hear. Yes, that's true. Joy Coats is writing comic strips for the News and Observer and Jo Ellen left for 'lexas with Jimmy the last I heard. Ray McGee and Dawn Grimes are finishing their last year at State College. Steve Gordon is at Cape Kennedy training to become an astronaut. Jimmy Benson is racing down at the Daytona 500 this year. Mitchell Langdon is running for Governor on the Republican Ticket. And that's all that I have heard about our classmates. We'll find out at our first class reunion next year. Well, I'd better get back to the office. See you again tomorrow. O.K. See you then. S herry Hardee Charlene Watson 40 Zn! Wd!! Qkmawl James Adams, leave to D.N. my ability to get along with R.S.
