' .iff v' , Sports As time This is a shot of Cleveland as it was several years ago. There had been no landscaping nor rebuilding. ln 1925, the people of Mt. Zion, Shiloh, and Palenta schools had a bond election to consolidate their small schools into a large school. After much dispute as to where the school would be built, twenty-four and one quarter acres were purchased at the school's present site. Construction was begun on June 5, 1926. The straight part facing the road, or what is now the front of the build- ing, was completed at a cost of approximately S58,000. An east wing was later added that cost approximately 318, OOO. The first principal, Mr. Teryall Q1926-19271, was aided by only four teachers. The second principal, Mr. George E. Smith 11927-19311, had only 3 teachers. Cleveland's other principals include: Mr. George Strickland 11931-19401, Mr. N. G. Woodlief 11940-195515 Mr. john W. Walker 11955-195815 and Mr. E. T. Bentonf1958- J. Cleveland is fortunate now to have 25 well-qualified teachers and 6 teachers' assistants. Cleveland had its beginning as an elementary school, after its completion in the fall of 1926. For the first three years, the seniors were sent to the Clayton Academy to graduate. They drove an old Ford furnished by the county. In 1931, Cleveland had eleven grades and was thus considered a high school. 4 5292 lm goes 59 , June 15, 1931, brought Cleveland's first graduating class of thirteen students - four girls and nine boys. This class was the smallest ever to graduate from Cleveland. In the fall of 1930, one year prior to the first graduating class, Cleveland began to progress. Pupils from Pleasant Grove, Elevation, Smithfield, Clayton, and Wilson Mills townships began to attend Cleveland School. In the past 27 years, many improvements have been made at Cleveland. In 1939, bathrooms were built for the boys and girls. A new agriculture building was built in 1953 and a gymnasium was added in 1954. Other improve- ments have been made recently, such as a new road, covered sidewalks, and improvements in the lunchroomg and in the science, math, home economics, history, and English departments. AP'l'AfParent-Teacher Association, was begun in 1955 and it has progressed in the 11 years since its organization. Cleveland's enrollment now is 617 students--428 in elementary school and 189 in high school. Forty-seven Sen- iors expect to graduate in 1967. -A ,A SL , sin .E ' - iw.,-I 'M I I- N ' X li ll 1 g ,MV , sv'-s N K W samskg ll, .,,, 'M ' 3, 'UI D 'T'-7 , ,UM ll ll a,.-,.1.W Nj! li in is ll , ' CLEVELAND SCI-IOOL, 1967. They have been forgotten and taken for granted many times in the past. But, though we haven't always shown it, we do love and appreciate all that they have done for us. How can we ever repay you for all your sacrifices? THE RAM is published with the deepest appreciation to these-our parents. C lass History The school days of the 1967 Seniors began back in 1955 with 82 bewildered boys and girls. The highlight of our first year was the toy band, which was a great success, since we had so many musicians in our midst. The next few years were comparatively quiet. We lost and gained classmates. We finally entered the eighth grade. Our trip to the State Capital was the most exciting adventure that year. We'll never forget Chapel I-lill, Raleigh, and Durham- boy, what fun! The Freshman year finally arrived with 54 students UQ 11-ying to find out which classes they belonged in. After much confusion, we found our way. As Freshmen, we weren't quite sure what class officers were for, but we chose them anyway. They were: Sonny johnson, President, Dennis Stephenson, Vice-President, Abigail Cook, Treasurer, and jo Ann McCabe, Secretary. We were just getting started this year and all the athletes in our class made the basketball teams. Tam Matthews and jo Ann McCabe made the cheering squad this year. I know you won't believe this, but we finally became Sophomores. This is the year we really shined. Becky Trader, Lou Ann Johnson, Phil Wood, Dennis Stephenson, and Brenda Dupree were inducted into the Beta Club. Sonny Johnson, Becky Trader, Tam Matthews, Melvin Johnson, Jo Ann McCabe, Larry johnson, Ricky Ennis, Brenda Dupree, Dennis Stephenson , Gail Jones, and Irene Morris became members of the Monogram Club. Brenda Gail Coats was honored as FFA Sweetheart this year. We topped our Sophomore year off with a party at the end of the year. We secured a live band and there was really some dancing done. Remember?! ? A century passed, and finally the git junior year arrived. Every thought, idea, secret, and plan was of the junior-Senior Prom. We really outdid ourselves with the prom. Our theme was Blue I-lawaii and the Weekenders really brought the house down QMemorial Auditorium, that isl. Under the leadership of our class officers, Phil Wood, President, Larry johnson, Vice-President, Dennis Stephenson, Reporter, Becky Trader, Treasurer, and Abigail C. Smith, Secretary, and our sponsors, Miss Hatcher and Mrs. Brown, our prom was the greatest Cleveland has had or ever will have. It is unknown whether anyone of us will ever recover from the painting, nailing, and cutting in- volved in decorating and cleaning up. But that was just about as much fun as the prom itself, but not quite! This year also found Patricia Moss a new addition to the Beta Club. Becky Trader was FFA Sweetheart this year. Our Marshals were Lou Ann Johnson, Chief, Patricia Moss, Brenda Dupree, Becky Trader, and Phil Wood. We ended our Jtmior year with a bang-and a debt! Blood, sweat, toil, and tears-Seniors at last! There were 47 of us now. Our Senior class officers were Sonny johnson, President, Larry Johnson, Vice-President, Patricia Moss, Secretary, Tam Matthews, Reporter, and Becky Trader, Treasurer. Gail King was honored with a trip to Chicago for outstanding work in 4-H. With our Senior year came class rings and a trip to Washington. Our Senior play, car washes, Macbeth, and money problems were other highlights of om' Senior year at Cleveland. But the greatest highlight of all was graduation and that treasured diploma. We may forget some of the things that happened to us at Cleveland, but we'll never forget all the knowledge we gained , friends fand enemiesj we made, and our love for Cleveland I-Iigh School. Historians PATRICIA MOSS JOE MIKE BAREFOOT 30 Class Prophecy Hello, Danny? This is Tam. I just called to find out how much you've gotten done on our class reunion. Have you located your half of the class yet? There are a few I haven't gotten in touch with, but you know-ten years is a long time. Who couldn't you find? Well, Melvin and Larry are playing with the Harlem Globetrotters and they move from state to state so fast that it's hard to catch them. Diane McGee travels abroad every summer so I'm not sure that I can reach her. There are a few I couldn't contact either. Lanny, joe Mike, Otis, and Danny Jones do Dutch Master Cigar com- mercials and you know how busy 'show-biz' people are. Herman stars in the Adams Family, and Bobby West just got the leading role in Go West, Young Man, Go West. I reached Janet johnson and Brenda Gail Coats, who have opened up a beauty salon for men. Ronald Johnson was their first customer, but he's hired a lawyer, Donald johnson, to sue for damages. You lcnow how long and drawn-out court cases are, so they might not make it. Congressman Mike Gardner and Governess Brenda Lou Coats are knee-deep in political affairs, but they said they would try to make it. Dennis and Lucy are going to close up their store, Jerry's Thrift Shop, and come to the reunion. Lucy designs clothes for Dennis to sell and Betty Barbour and Linda Troxler model them. II Did you know that Gail Jones and Bonnie Allen are swinging Go-Go Girls in Ray Blalock's Pool Room. I-le's going to give them the day off to come. Sonny and Lou Ann have gone into business selling Johnson and johnson Baby Products, and Peggy Price and Be Bridges have worked their wa u to check-out clerks in Gail's establishment the King Store. WY Y P 1 Earl, Ronnie, and Phil Wood were so carried away with their positions as bus drivers in school that they are now employed with Trailways. Tommy Love works in Phil's Barber Shop, and Patricia Moss is a Candy Striper at Duke Hospital where Sammy is head orderly. They all agreed to come. I found out that Irene Morris joined the Peace Corps to be near her husband and Brenda Dupree joined to keep Irene out of trouble with the cannibals. Their coming is out of the question. Becky Trader had just finished writing her first novel, How to Marry a Millionaire, when the town electrician, Donald Stephenson, cut off her power for not paying her electric bill. She wrote and told me she would come if she could straighten everything out at home. jo Ann McCabe has started the Lonely Hearts Club, but no one seems to be lonely so she said unless she got some members she would make it to the reunion. Nell Franke and Nancy Langdon said they could come if they could get baby-sitters, and Ricky says he will come if he can bring his wife. Well, of course, Joe Young will be here since he's on the committee too, so I think we will have a pretty big success. Danny, there's just one more thing. Would you tell your wife to stop griping about the phone bill. I'll pay for the call, and I'll see you at the reunion. Twelve long years have passed since that day we walked into the first grade class for the first time. 'I'hat's a ter- ribly long time! Yet, somehow, we made it. We made it to the highlight, the goal of those twelve long years. Through those many years we have shared so much joy, pain, sorrow, guilt, love, hatred, and genuine friend- ship. Can all these things ever be taken from our memories? Those same people we have lived with for twelve years will no longer be a part of us. After a few years of separation, Cleveland will have changed so much that it is not recognizable to us who will leave it now. Our home will be taken from us. As is the case in most situations, these twelve years have brought good and bad memories. There have been disa greements. We have been enemies one day and friends the next. But now, as we depart, let all our memories be of the good times. the wonderful things-for they far out-weigh the bad. Years from now, perhaps we will meet again. But Jane won't be that same silly high school girl you remember- she'll be a wife and mother. Those people will grow and mature. They will be the same persons, of course, but these days as they are now, will be gone forever. Time changes things immensely. That's the purpose of this book. We hope it will serve as a means of transportation to carefree, happy memories. We hope it will move you to appreciate your days at Cleveland. The 1967 Ram would not have been possible without the help of all those who worked at selling ads. And to Mr. J. H. Langdon, we give a special Thank you for putting up with a very unsure btmch. We also want to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Linda Barefoot, for her assistance. Cleveland I-ligh School-not too big or well-known, but it's the greatest. And you know why? The students make it that way. As we leave that's what we'll remember. So all who are left behind, don't let us down. We hope this yearbook will, in any small way, help each of you to remember twelve wonderful, crazy, heart- breaking years and help you live again among these hallowed halls of ivy. . .
