As we the Senior Class of 1963 near the end of our high school journey, we would like to turn back the hands of time and recapture a few of the highlights of our school days. J Green freshmen at last! The first day almost everyone was lost, but everyone was confused. There was a great deal to learn and many adjustments to be made our freshman year. That year we chose Joe Dupree as presidentg Danny Byrd as vice-presidentg Phyllis Blalock as secretary: and Walter Langley as treasurer. Gayle Sherrill and Phyllis Blalock became cheerleaders that year. That year Kay Young was a pagette in j the House of Representatives in Raleigh. We ended our freshman year with a party at the Pleasant Grove Community Building. i l ln our sophomore year we felt we played an equal part in school activities. Members of our class held 3 memberships in most of the organizations in high school. Our officers were Gerald Ogburn as presidentg Charles Pope as vice-presidentg Kay Young as secretaryg and Gayle Sherrill as treasurer. During our sopho- 3 more year many of the class became Beta Club members. They were as follows: Phyllis Blalock, Danny Byrd, Faye Cobb, Nathan Dry, Joyce Hardee, Jackie Honeycutt, Carolyn Johnson, Walter Langley, Judy Raye Parrish, Betsy Stephenson, Gloria Stephenson, Jerry Stephenson, Arthur Wall, Nina Wiggins, and Kay Young. j Those in our class who participated in sports received their first letters for outstanding athletic ability from the Monogram Club. They were Charles Baker, Danny Byrd, Wanda Byrd, Faye Cobb, Nathan Dry, Carolyn Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Gerald Ogburn, Judy Raye Parrish, Charles Pope, Gayle Sherrill, Gloria Stephenson, Steve Thigpen, and Kay Young. Kay Young won a trip to Chicago for outstanding work in 4-H. Judy Raye J Parrish won a National Science Foundation Scholarship to N.C. State that summer. We were looking forward 1 to the remaining years at C.H.S. Life was becoming interesting. j 1 E There are always those who debate whether the junior or the senior year is the best. The junior year was full of fun! We had members in every club and sport. We elected Steve Thigpen as president of the junior class. The other officers were Walter Langley as vice-presidentg Jerry Stephenson as secretary, and Peggy Benson as treasurer. For the members in the Monogram Club it has been a lot of fun to decorate the gym for our annual Monogram Dance. The time for our first Junior-Senior Prom had arrived. Our dreams had come true, it was wonderful! This year our marshals were also chosen. They were Gloria Stephenson, chiefg Faye Cobb, Carolyn Johnson, Judy Raye Parrish, and Kay Young. That year Jerry Johnson and Arthur Wall were chosen to attend Boy's State. Kay Young placed second in Public Speaking in Johnston County and won the World Peace Award. At the end of the year, Peggy Benson received the Home Economics A- ward and Faye Cobb received the History Award. We had a most successful year. Finally, we were dignified seniors. So far our senior year has been filled with studies and extra activi- ties. Our officers this year are Nathan Dry, presidentg Steve Thigpen, vice-presidentg Nina Wiggins, secre- tary, and Walter Langley, treasurer. Our first project was to sell ads for our annual, the RAM. We sold magazines to finance our trip to Washington, D. C., next Spring. Now we are searching for the right play which will be presented later this year. Our rings have been ordered and we are beginning to feel like seniors. We have chosen mascots and superlatives. We were very proud when Alice Faye Raynor was elected Federation Sweetheart. There is yet so much to enjoy this yearg our play, our trip, the Junior-Senior Prom which we are looking forward to very much, our annual that we are so proud of, and last, our graduation. As we look back over our journey we find many happy memories. Times were not always good, nor were they always bad, but it took both to make our journey at Cleveland High School complete. j l We learned a great deal at C.H.S. to help us be good citizens. Our activities have made us better mentally and physically. All this has been truly -- Moments to Remember. Closs Poem As our day of departure is drawing nigh, We reminisce with a formidable sigh Of days that are gone, that cannot remain, That melt into eternity like drops of rain. Our hearts are light and our minds are free As we watch each passing hour flee. Until we are alone to face the strife And fight our own dual with life. Knowing that we are the makers of our own fate, We tread more softly than we did of late, For in our footsteps there is someone to follow, Someone whom life 's cruelties must not swallow. Someone who deserves better than we Someone who must be guided by He, So we strive to set a pattern that won't grow old, A pattern forever strong and bold.
