N i Class H isfory 1 We, the Senior Class of 1960, began making history in the fall of l948, when a large number of excited and some- what confused first graders began their education here at Cleveland. Our elementary school days were highlighted by picnics, parties, and a few short educational trips. As the years sped by, we eagerly awaited the day we would enter J high school. I In the fall of 1956, that much anticipated day arrived. It was then that fifty-seven of us freshmen entered high school ' and began to adjust ourselves to our new teachers and principal, Mr. John Walker. We were happy to welcome Willard Dry to our class from Garner. Several members of our class began to participate in 4-H Club, Glee Club, F. H. A. , and J F.F.A. activities. That year, Barbara Pleasant, Johnnie Coats, Carol Thigpen, Gerald Coats, and Shepherd Byrd were J placed on the basketball team. Shirley Price and Gladys Bowling became cheerleaders. At the beginning of our sophomore year we were greatly bereaved by the loss of Gerald Coats. Also that year we J were happy to welcome Bradford Barbour from Four Oaks to our class. At midterm, Mr. Walker left, Mr. Boyette took f over for the rest of the year. Bennie Roberts became a new member of the basketball team. Carolyn Parrish was a cheerleader that year. Joan Langdon was awarded the English medal and Mary Lou Johnson won the World Peace Medal. Jimmie Stephenson made us proud by becoming state cotton production winner and receiving a trip to Chicago. J When we re-entered school the next fall as Juniors, we found that Mr. Tom Benton, our former science teacher, was now our principal. We were glad to welcome Jane Bridges from Garner to ou.r class at this time. We were excited and thrilled over the presentation of our Junior play The Calamity Kids, which was directed by 4 Mrs. Boyette and Mrs. Gulley. The cast of our play was composed of Patricia Braswell, Mack Pollard, Hilda Byrd,Alfred Taylor, Reece Byrd, Johnnie Coats, Phil King, Betty Sue Johnson, Mary Lou Johnson, Donald Beasley, and Joan Langdon. Our Junior- Senior Banquet was held March 13, 1959, in the gymnasium and was followed by a prom. J Our marshals were: Mary Lou Johnson and Joan Langdon Qco-chiefsj, Betty Sue Johnson, Jo Anne Ogburn, Hilda Byrd, and Alfred Taylor. That year four juniors distinguished themselves in the following ways: Patricia Braswell was chosen F. F.A. Sweet- J heart of the Cleveland Chapter, I-lilda Byrd was awarded the Home Economics medal, Mary Lou Johnson and Joan Lang- l don were awarded the history and mathematics medals jointly, Mary Lou Johnson was awarded the English medal. Phil King and Alfred Taylor became members of the basketball team. On September 2, 1959, the day we had been awaiting for eleven years had arrived. At last we were Seniors! Added to the thrill of being seniors, we had Mr. Smith as our homeroom teacher. Along the way we had lost as well as gained a few students. Our Class was now down to thirty-two. Our senior class was especially proud that a Beta Club was organized that year and we claimed the charter members: Mary Lou Johnson, Betty Sue Johnson, I-lilda Byrd, Jo Anne Ogburn, Joan Langdon, Clara Faye Langdon, Reece Byrd, Alfred Taylor, Barbara Pleasant, and Willard Dry. J We will not readily forget the thrill of receiving our class rings, of choosing our superlatives and mascots, and of 1 electing our class officers and annual staff. We are eagerly looking forward to many more important events to follow. i After graduation, the Senior class of 1960, as a group, will stop making history. We shall always be grateful to every- one who has helped in any way to make our education here at Cleveland High School possible. We shall try to prove our- selves worthy of the sacrifices that have been made for us by striving to become good citizens of our community and om' country.
