Mascots Jennie Sorrell Newell Brooks HISTORY In the fall of 1952 we finally reached our long-coveted status: Freshmen! We soon found out that high school students didn'tcutclasses as much as we'd heard, that the lessons were often dull, and that exciting things were few and far between. Still, the novelty of being in high school held its luster all during that year. Mrs. Jones and Mr. Simmons, the ninth grade homeroom teachers, took us in hand, explained our schedule, and helped us straighten out our conflicts. Our new Agriculture building was finished that year and the first Agriculture class was largely composed of our boys. That was the year Shelby Stephenson placed second in the F.F.A. County Federation public speak- ing contest. We'd always thought we had several good basketball players in our class and were pleased when Mr. War rick and Mrs. Beddingfield, the coaches, showed their agreement by placing Donna Honeycutt, Mary McGee, Shelby Stephenson, Lewis Sanders and H. L. Sorrell on the basketball teams and Wilson Langdon and Shelby Stephenson on the baseball team. The Sophomores have often been called the most forgotten and restless class in high school. The novelty of high school has worn off and they have no banquet or play to look forward to. But our class, determined NOT to be forgotten, set out to conquer newer and larger fields. Mary McGee, having proved she COULD play ball, turned her talents to cheerleading, and in the twelfth grade became chief cheerleader. Under the direc- tion of Mrs. Charles Gulley a glee club was organized and several of our class became members. In F.F.A, Shelby Stephenson placed first in the county-wide public speaking contest, a position he was to hold until he graduated. Minnie Hobby, Clara Powell, Bobby McGee, Linwood Johnson, and Janice Ennis were new additions to the basketball teams, while Donna Honeycutt and Lewis Sanders moved up to first String POSiIi0f1S- Linwood also made the baseball team that year. While Shelby was winning county awards, Peggy Byrd won an award in a National typing contest. That was the year we welcomed Sue Stephenson into our school. The Junior -Senior Banquet and junior play highlighted our junior year, and because of Mrs. Gulley's help, our banquet was acclaimed the nicest ever with the first after-banquet dance. J. H. Langdon and Dan Lee made the basketball team that year. Shelby Stephenson was elected vice- president of the F.F.A. Federation, while J. l-I. Langdon and Linwood Johnson were two of a three -member team winning the dairy cattle judging contest. In the twelfth grade June Jones and Shirley Higgins were welcome additions to the cheerleading teamg and H. L. Sorrell, George Coats, and J. L. Hunt were chosen to play baseball. Lewis Sanders was elected treasur- er of the F.F.A. Federation. Along with' the senior homeroom, the senior dignity andprivileges, AND Mrs. Fisher, we also inherited from the preceding seniors the headache of financing our trip to New York. It was a touch-and-go affair but the magazine campaign, our annuals, and the senior play pulled us through, enabling us to spend several un- forgettable days in New York and Washington. Our high school days are almost behind us now. Mingled with the joys and laughter have been hard work and tears of frustration, but it's all been so worth-while that we feel no other class has had such a memorable history.
