MASC OTS Junior Ennis Betty Hatcher i 1 w l I-IISTGRY The schools days of the Seniors of 1955 began in 1942. Like all first graders we were afraid, but,as soon as we learned the schedule, everything became routine. The years sped by and, before we realized it, we were where we had always longed to be, in high school. The freshman year was rather hectic because everything was so new. We enjoyed the physical education course most of all because we got the chance for outdoor activity three days during the week. We were very proud of Minnie Williams, Hilda Clifton, Ann Stephenson, Sylvia Massengill, Billy Jones, and Marshall Stephenson, the freshmen who made the basketball teams. As the year passed, we became familiar withall the high school routine. Then came our sophomore year. Everyone was glad to be back at Cleveland after a nice vacation. Ween- joyed the trip to Pullen Park that year. We also got a new teacher, Mr. Jessie Warrick, whom we liked very much. By the time our sophomore year came to a close, we were eager to get into our junior year. One of the main attractions of our junior year was our play, Hob-Goblin House , directed by Mrs. Henry Diggs, The cast of our play was composed ofBet Taylor, Billy Jones, Danford Raynor, Nancy Jo Langdon, Theodore Partin, Ann Stephenson, Bruce Byrd, Jimmy Wallace, Jerry Johnson, Barbara Cooke, and Sylvia Massengill. Nancy King and Helen Blalock were prompters. We hope everyone enjoyed our play. The night of the Junior-Senior Banquet came at last! It was held at the Woman's Club in Clayton with lvirs. Helen Gulley as sponsor. The theme for the banquet was April Showers . We were thrilled because it was the first time we had really dressed up. Another event in our junior year was thepresentationof the rose chain to the seniors at class night. The mar- shals were Bet Taylor, chief marshal, Billy Jones, Barbara Cooke, Sarah Johnson, and Sylvia Massengill. September 3, 1954 was the day for which we had waited for eleven years. That day began our senior year. We havea new senior teacher, Mrs. George Fisher. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Boyette and Mrs. Zack Perkinson are also new at Cleveland this year . We shall strive to make the best of every moment of this year. We are looking forward to our play, the ban- quet, and most of all, graduation. We shall always be grateful to Mr. Woodlief and all our teachers for their efforts to help us better ourselves and to become responsible citizens of our community and state. Sylvia Massengill - - Historian I I F if 51 Y . ,, E E: Prophecy I am Sergeant Patsy Clifton of the F.B.I. in Washington, D.C. Ihad just received a call reporting a holdup on 62nd Street. I rushed to the scene of the crime and found that the drug store of the well-known Jerry Johnson and Bobby Barber had been robbed. After the criminal had been caught and the date of the trial had been set, Idecided to have a friendly conversation with the pharmacists, Bobby and Jerry, since they were my old classmates. During our talk they asked me about the whereabouts of our other classmates. I told them I had not been home in five years and didn'tknow. ThelbertLangley, my boss, came in to check on the case and overheard the statement. On hearing us he said, Sgt, Clifton, since you don't know the whereabouts of your classmates, your job is to find them. I lit up a Chesterfield and began to think. Idecided not to buy a straight through ticket to my home town as I would want to stop in every town. As I stepped into the bus, I found that R. B. Parrish was the driver. I asked R. B. about some of our classmates and he said that the only two he knew about were Mary Lynn Smith and Evelyn Johnson, who commuted on his bus to their jobs, designing window scenes for Talheimer's Department Store in Richmond, Virginia. He also said that Carl Honeycutt was president of the firm. By this time we were at the station, and I thanked him for the information. I went to a cafeteria on Broad Street. The food which I was served was simply delicious. I asked for the head dietition and to my surprise it was Bet Taylor, who enjoyed home economics so well during our old school days. When I saw her I forgot about the food and started asking her about our classmates. Of course she knew about most of them. She told me that Nancy King was head nurse in the maternity ward in Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She also told me that Sarah Nell Johnson was a second grade school teacher at Cleveland School. I glanced at my watch and saw by this that I must go. On my way out, I met Helen Blalock and Richard Gulley, who were on their honeymoon. They must be getting along fine now because Pug had on a mink coat. Richard told me that he had taken Clifford Sauls' place as deputy of Elevation township. He said that the first one he arrested was Gerald Langdon for careless and reckless driving. lt was not in the papers because Gerald was a very prominent auctioneer at the Smithfield Tobacco Market. Idecidedthat, beforelcaughtthe next bus, I would check my list and see how many seniors I had located. I had located eleven and had twenty-five more to find. I boarded the next bus and to my surprise there was Bruce Byrd, who started out as a hobo, and ended up as a hobo, stealing rides on Trailways. We didn't talk much, but he did tell me that Sarah Jane Hatcher had joined the Waves. Our next stop was in Raleigh, N. C. While there Idecided to go out to Rex Hospital to speak to Nancy King. Nancy told me that the former Nancy Jo Langdon, now Mrs. Jerrel Cobb, was in the maternity ward with a 10 pound bouncing baby boy. I went up to speak to her and she told me that Peggy Wilson was doing mission work in Africa and Minnie Williams was a physical education teacher at Hugh Morson High School. She also told me that Billy Jones had taken Everett Cases' place as coach at State. Visiting hours ended and I had to leave. As my rented car needed gas, I stopped at the next Esso Station owned and operated by Harold Ennis and J. S. Stephenson. Harold told me that several of our classmates were living in Raleigh now. He also said that Lena Faye Barbour who had married J. H. Langdon now lived next door to Reid Penny, who had married Jenny Altman and finally settled down to being a real family man. As I started to leave the Esso Station, I glanced at the sign which said the great matador, Danford Raynor of Spain and his senorita, Myrtle Phillips were co-starring in a performance at the Memorial Auditorium. This news shocked me so that I decided to have another coke and Chesterfield. I stopped by Warlick's Soda Shop and to my surprise Rudy West was soda jerk and pharmacy assistant. I picked up a morning paper and on the society page, I saw a familiar name--Sylvia Massengill, who is now president of the Raleigh branch of the Lonely Hearts Club. I also read in this paper that Marshall Stephenson and Hilda Clifton were with the Grand Ole Opry. Hilda had taken Minnie Pearl's place and Marshall still strummed a mean banjo. As I started out of the drug store I met my old friend, Mrs. Lynwood Creech, the former Helen Walton, She said that Lynwood was really making money since he was head of Dix Hill and that she hadn't had to work since she was married except to tend to the children. Helen told me that Ann Stephenson had really succeeded in life. She was now president of all 4-H Clubs in N. C. I was not surprised because She waS alwayS such an active 4-H Member. As I started for the bus station, I met Lieutenant Jimmy Wallace who had received many honors in the army. He told me that Mary Thomas was now Homer Briarhopper's star singer. When I reached the station, Barbara Cooke, who now works at the Revenue Building, had a ticket on the same bus I was riding. When we got in the bus, who should be in the driver's seat but Elvin Love, who was such a dependable school bus driver at Cleveland High. Now that all the seniors of 1955 had been found, they were tried and found guilty of having a very success- ful life.
