I XJ' SENICDR CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class of l953, began our high school days at Cleve- land High School in the fall of l949 with an enrollment of seventy-two proud freshmen. For the first few days we ran around like wild chickens, but af- ter hearing Mr. Miller's shouts, we finally learned where to go. During the year Mrs. Galloway, our typing teacher, became ill, and Mrs. Henry Diggs of Smithfield took her place. We had a lot of fun, especially in Mr. Mercer's health class, but we also learned a great deal. Being more familiar with high school, we were ready to begin our sophomore year. We had several boys and girls on the basketball team with Mr. Dewey Huggins Jr. as the new coach. We were very happy to have Mrs. Galloway back with us and were especially proud to welcome our new stu- dent, Ellen Overman. When we returned as Juniors in the fall of l952., we thought we were the most important people in the world. We were able to see at the very be- ginning that this was going to be a happy year. We had a new French teacher, Mrs. Cfulley, whom we liked very much. Our biggest task was to secure money with which to sponsor the Junior-Senior banquet. We had quite a thrill in presenting our Junior play, Cro Slow, Mary, under the direction of Mrs. Diggs, our home-room teacher. We were very pleased at the result of making over 5150. We will always remember our Junior-Senior banquet, which was given on February ZZ, l95Z, at the Village Restaurant in Cameron Village.Another highlight of the year was the privilege of ordering our class rings, which were to arrive during our Senior year. We participated in the Class Night Exercise by presenting a rose chain to the Seniors. The year of excitement and fun was over, and at last the big day ar- rived. We were Seniors! Our biggest thrill occurred the day our rings came We almost went crazy until we got them on. We are looking forward to many other happy events this year including the Junior-Senior banquet, the Senior play, Class Night Exercise, and most important of all, graduation. We es- pecially want to thank Mr. Woodlief, our principal, and all the faculty for their kindness and understanding toward us and for the possibility of our graduation. K I y u SENIOR CLASS PROP!-IECY It's l963, and television has advanced so that the dials and the antennas can be adjusted for views in the future as well as the present. Imagine my surprise last Saturday night when looking at the Grand Ole Opry I saw Herman Ogburn calling square dance figures! Daylon Williams and Louise McLeod had their own special spot of wit and humor as Come- dians on the show. Next I saw scenesfrom one of New York's famous night clubs. Elgie and Rudolph, Joyce and Benton, and Helen and James were having worlds of fun listening to Joe Rex Wallace and Earl Ray Honeycutt harmonizing. Have you seen the new issue of LOOK ? Ellen Overman and Shirley Gray Stephenson, famous models, decorate the front page. Recently the headlines in the sports section of the News and Observer were about Roy M. Raynor, another Choo Choo , and Frank Tart, a Yan- kee star. Ph. D's Melvin Noles and Ann Creech are composing a new Economics book equipped with those long definitions for Mr. Woodlief's own special use. We all remember Shirley Marcom, Dorothy McGee and I..oRitaBeasley's interest in the Air Corps. It wasn't a surprise to learn that they are now following their lucky mates in the Air Force as Wafs. Nancy and Billy Stephenson are a successful Johnston County farm and home agent couple, who are busy raising beef calves and little 4-Hers. Patsy Stephenson and her little sailors are touring the country with the United States Navy! Ben and Bobby Ray have finally gotten Sarah Pearl and Shirley to settle down with cook books instead of school books. It keeps William Roberson and Dwight and Swade Barbour, well -known lawyers, busy defending Woodrow Coats on speeding charges. Becky Johnson and Joyce Fowler have finally graduated from W. C. g and they are now employed as private secretaries of a business executive, Gerald Hobby. Oh yes, the girls have special privileges with Gerald's new Coupe Cadillac! Harold Langdon and James Langley are now working for their uncle -- Sam! ! Brookie Wiggins and EdnaMims recently appeared on the program, Break The Bank . They all won enough money to retire for life. Wouldn't it be fun to be mud-rich ? Martha Stephenson and Margie McGee now operate a dress shop in Fuquay. Johnston County's new celebrity is Hazel Clifton, Miss America of 1955. Now that you've seen and heard future events, the sale of TV sets will be booming, I'm sure! y LAST WILL 6' TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Three, of Cleveland High School, in the county of Johnston, state of North Caro- lina being of sound mind and realizing our departure from this school, do not wish to depart without first making our last will and testament.
