Among the most beautiful Ameri- can folk hymns are the Spirituals of the American Negro, These beautiful poetic expressions of their new Christian faith and hope in the happiness promised in a future lite in compensation for the hardships of exile from their native land and of slavery in their new home are communal in origin. To the leaders in American music who have contributed so much to our cultural heritage and to the enjoyment ot our leisure, and to the instructors who have given of their talents that others might learn to parti- cipate in and enjoy the se- crets of music which lie hid- den to the passive observer, we, the Senior Classes and the Beacon Staff of l95Z proudly dedicate this book. ,bfi 2 Some of the better known Spirituals are Swing Low Sweet Chariot Sometimes l Feel Like a Motherless Child Look Down That Lonesome Road and I Couldn t Hear Nobody Pray Ella Fitzgerald Bessy Smith Pearl Bailey ' Ethel Waters Louie Armstrong and Lionel Hampton are a few of the gifted Negro vocal- ists who have made our country proud of the American Negro's contribution to our American culture. N' 6 J' ffff American ballads are parophrases of the old English ballads brought to their new homes by the colonists from their native land, They tell in story form of the new surround- ings in which the early settlers found them- selves. They were popular with our pioneer peoples and they remain so to this day. While many other types of music have come into vogue from time to time, the ballad singer with his guitar has never been entirely re- placed. Realizing that, since the time of the Pilgrims, Americans have demonstrated their originality and ingenuity in all fields, creating new and different cul- tures, and that the descendants of these hearty colonists have excelled commendably in the field of music, bringing forth melodies and rhythms distinctly and intensely American, radiating the characteristics repre- sentative of our land and our land alone, we of the Staff have chosen American Music Through the Years as our theme, and it is our sincere hope that this edi- tion will be favorably received by the student body. ADMINISTRATION SENIORS ,, ,, ADVISORY GROUPS PUBLICATIONS ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS , ACTIVITIES 0 'ne O ef D 523 There ore mony types of bollods. They express the numerous emotions thot ore oroused in the humon breost by the diverse kinds of environment - physicol, politicol, religious, ond even worlike - thot our greot country hos so generously provided tor its profuse ond heterogeneous populotion, They have been written by Americons for Ameri- cons. Since its inception in Austria about l75O, America in general and St. Louis in particular have mode no small contribution to the sym- phony orchestra's tremendous Q growth in size and complexity. America boasts thirty-five pro- fessional symphony orchestras. Among these St. Louis ranks in the top eleven and is the second oldest. lts popularity attests to the high cultural standard of America's mu- sic lovers. ?mm:,mZ Arthur J Svoboda Prmcupol of Grover Cleveland Hugh School 8 .. , . . , .1.:f,wmE!2Twf,,2:, ,l ,, f ' fi. ,nq,,13qLz55-552,we ' . The Gay Nineties mark one of the greatest periods of development and expansion in the history of our grow- ing nation. During this era of bar- ber shop quartettes, horseless car- riages, minstrel shows, cigar store Indians, and bicycles built for two, there emerged a large group of songs reflecting the moods and feelings of the times. Barber shop harmony sung extempor- aneously by ear had universal appeal because of its sincerity and simplicity. ,gr ..-4 1--- 5, -,Q ,,-i , il' s-,- ,.,-1-I K Q l -if 7a 76a 7757 Season gauned Clay can be the mud on your shoes and worthless or wuth knowledge and skull ut can be tashuoned unto an object ot exquusute beauty and great worth A chuldren we learned that God mode rnan of clay but the work of Hus hands must be tested by fume to determune uts worth Your home your church and Cleveland Hugh School all have con trubuted each un uts way to help you attaun that knowledge and skull whuch would enable you to ture the beautufully rnade fugure you are unto a beung of lastung and great worth Cleveland Hugh School us happy to have had uts share un guvung you the knowledge and the skulls you now have lt us the hope of us all that you wull guve us the occasuon to be proud ot the use to whuch you put that knowledge you gauned un your stay wuth us Liu f 1 1 f - . u . 5 , I 1 - 1 1 f l David Kory ,, 7777,7gsY Judith Dressler ,7777 7 Emiline Royco Joan Neels 77, Kenneth Lux Stewart Cloud Miss Boland Ebac of Qammg 7257 DAVID JOSEPH KORY Basketball, B Team, Cross Country, Letter, Track Team, 2 Academic C , O 8. In the latter part of the nineteenth century jazz became popular in the south and moved north on the show- boats. It caught in Chicago, St. Louis, and New York, and, by 1930, Jazz, now called Swing, had be- come the biggest thing ever. With World War ll its popularity began to fade, but it was kept alive in New Orleans and in l946 it en- joyed a rebirth. Our club, as do more than a thousand others like it, strives to be led by its motto: WE BUlLD. We build on the foundation of service. By service to the school and community the Key Club seeks to develop potential leaders. Some of the more successful projects in- clude the Faculty-Key Club Basketball Game which netted a large amount of money for various community welfare projects, and the sale of steak knives as Christmas presents. Another monumental task the Key Club tackled was that of transcribing the names of graduates for a permanent office file. However, the club is not strictly o service organization, and the social aspect is not neg- lected as we seek to better relationships with others. Under the guidance and sponsorship of Mr. Julian, it has sent two members each week to the Southside Kiwanis Club for its lunch- eons, it has held a hayride last October, it has held an appreciation banquet for the parents of its members. These are the accomplishments of the Key CIub's second year. For a most success- ful year we join in thanking our sponsors, Mr. Julian, and the Southside Kiwanis Club, and our fine corps of officers. 93 14 Zappefia ' Row One: Bonnia Long, Judy Sanburn, Marianne Heinicke, Ann Yost, Janet Maness, Barbara Belew, Martha Gumoert, Ruth Ann Pauly, Jo Ann Stockglausner, Linda Virgo, Sally Thym, Miroda Tornanec, Row Two: Barry Morris, Donald Nernec, John Muller, Dave Folk, Richard Reirn, Sheila Barry, Robert Mullgardt, Dick House, Jim Thompson, Arthur Barharst, Bob Harper. Well, why should l take choir? ' may well be the wondering question a Nu-Jay may ask. A knowing Senior might well answer this question with, You'll have to give it a try and find out for yourself, but my advice is that you give it a try. For the Nu-Jay's quandary is one that can be answered after only a short time in one of the choir classes offered at Cleveland. Whether it is a beginning class such as Junior Choir or in the more ex- perienced performing A Cappella, a pupil soon becomes an enthusiastic participant in the mass feeling of loyalty and in the standards and ideals infused in Room 300, the Music Room. For the fifteenth consecutive year, A Cappella, the Chorale Depart- ment's pride, boasts the largest membership of all St, Louishhigh school choirs. ln this A period class, meeting an hour before the regular school day begins, will be found well over two hundred ardent Clevelandite early birds eager to sing. Miss Charlotte Louise Mann, a veteran of twenty five years on the Cleveland Faculty and well known to every Cleveland pupil, has been the masterful mentor of all past choirs. The success of her method in inculcat- ing not only musical skills but also co-operation and citizenship has been amply demonstrated by the quality of performance of her pupils while they were here at Cleveland and by the number of those who have attained recog- nition professionally. The many pupils who have been graduated in the past and who are now popular performers in the entertainment world are a gratify- ing reflection on the A Cappella Choir, Miss Mann, and the Grover Cleve- land High School. 96 cwiafz ' 514- ' Row One: Juanita Walker, Sue Brandewiede, Gloria Dunajcik, Diane Gude, Sandra Lee Tyrpak, Susan Wuetherich, JoAnn Wetzel, Sue Raymer, Janet Neis, Mary June Kestler, Lilian Kuhlmann, Marilyn Barney, Marion Diehn, Carolyn Steffens. After graduation when the strains of familiar songs, diligently worked on and mastered to certain perfection, are heard, memories of the happy hours of past years spent in choir will linger - the many friendships culti- vated in the congenial atmosphere of Room 300, the rushed lunches to climb breathlessly to the third floor to go over again and again your particular vocal part in a selection, that thrill on opening night when the Castle presented an Operetta or Spring Show, the inspiration from the melody of O Bone Jesu , or the entrancement felt when singing the cheerful buoyant notes of Oklahoma, When we who are now attending Cleveland tell a friend how Cleveland's A Cappella, our choir, was asked to be on Ted Mack's On Stage in St. Louis television program and how much fun it was singing with a large group, it may well help that friend to understand why every person benefits, both in training and growth, by being an active member of a Cleveland choir. Indeed, these may be reasons enough to convince a person, and yet there is still another answer beyond expression but one which every choir member feels deep in his own heart. Yes, these many reasons may differ, yet they still add up to one grand total of Character Growth Through Music Study. 97 :man dm Efwl Zhwd- df ls Row One: Janet Sanburn, Vivian Green, Sue Brando- wiede, Ja Ann C. No other club has a more diversified and inter- esting gathering of students than this club. Every Thursday afternoon the club meets, as it has done for more than forty years, and discusses or debates topics from the alI-im- portant to the seemingly least trivial. But nothing is really trivial, as any Webster- Hayner will attest. Sometimes an insignifi- cant discussion will draw forth that unusual humor and outstanding logic that is necessary for success in public speaking. The import- ant fact is the Webster-Hayne offers an op- portunity through its symposiums to develop the art of speaking, with the helpful com- ments of its sponsor, Mr. H. M. Doxsee. Speaking, as an art, is too frequently neglect- ed, and Webster-Hayne seeks to compensate for this deficiency. It is a significant fact to note three of the five finalists in last yeor's Voice of Democracy ' contest were active members and officers of the club, all trained by Mr. Doxsee. During the weekly debates an attempt is made for everyone in attendance imagin- to expound his opinions, or fantasies. ation and a sense of perception are essential to hold the attention of an audience, and only Webster- for this constant training can perfect this. Hayne is a valuable instrument practice. As a supplement to our regular meetings we have successfully feted the Spanish club in the annual Christmas party and, of course, we are all eagerly awaiting the picnic given for us in the late spring. With the continued dynamic leadership that has been Webster-Hayne's good fortune to have, our club can aspire to even greater success, enjoyment, and opportunity for all Cleveland students. l President cc, L L ,L Bob Mach Vice-Presidents ,, sLeon James Secreta ry-Treasurerc L L so L Dan Jansen Sergeant at Armscwstcct L eee, .Bob Kraemer Row One: Richard Reim, Carl Cresswell, Richard Sheets, Four: Gene Pieper, William Blasberg, Joe Vegyelek, Mel Jackson, Roland Hawkins, Roy Wichmann. As with all new organizations unforeseen problems and obstacles arise, and each in turn had to be met and conquered, Everyone is proud of the fine record of this group of boys and know that they have diligently worked to achieve their goal of higher standards in sports and the development of better relat- ions between the faculty and the athletes. The privilege of belonging to the Lettermen's Club is limited to those boys who have earned a varsity letter in a sport approved by, or which re- ceives benefits from, the St. Louis Public High School League such as foot- ball, basketball, baseball, track, cross-country, swimming, tennis, and gym team. We urge all lettermen who are not members to submit their application for membership as soon as possible. In numbers there is strength, and we feel that all lettermen should belong and lend their support to this club. Only with lOO per cent membership can lOO per cent of the goal be obtained. 108 gow Z ' President Vice-President Secretary Assistant Secretorys , as Treasurer . .. .s-Marvin King Conway Briscoe Larry Charpiot .s.sAlan Schubert . . The main object of the club is to teach the boys the fundamentals of the sport. The league consists of eight teams of five men each, bowling every Thursday afternoon after school. The league is a very well-balanced one with the good and the no-so-good bowlers evenly distributed among the teams, and the weekly bowling is based on a handi- cap. This makes for a close race which looks as though it may go to the last week before it is decided. The boys also had a Christmas Tournament with the winners receiving an individual trophy. At the end of the season the members ofthe three first place teams receive trophies. 109 Rifle shooting is a self-supporting sport with no help received in any way from the General Fund. All expenses incurred by the club are paid by its members. With five returning team members the team feels confident of winning the Public High League championship for the third con- secutive year and from there go on to win the city championship which has eluded us for the few years. To win the city championship the winner of the Public High League must defeat the winner of the Parochial High League. The Public High League opponents ofthe boys' rifle team are: O'Fallon boys, O'Fallon girls, Southwest, Beaumont, and Cleveland girls. The team members are: John Dohr, Ro- bert Ebbler, Robert Erxleben, Michael Herzog, Gene Jenkins, and Lance Welling. Our spon- sor and coach is Mr. Julian. New members are always welcome. We credit our improvement to the untiring efforts and expert instruction of our sponsor and able coach, Mr. Julian. Membership in the club is open to girls of every term - one through eight. Not only is a great deal gained from instruction lima in the all important art of safe handling of firearms, but also from the satisfaction one feels from accomplishing improvement and success in target competition. Squares and Circles is a newly organized square-dancing club under the sponsorship of Miss Lewis. The club meets after school every Wednesday in the Girls' Gym. This is a fine recreational club for both girls and boys, however, at present there is a decided need for more boys. The purposes of the club are to get the and boys together as a group and to fun. Besides square dancing the club does round dances and in the near future we expect to undertake modern dance - mambo, girls have H2 tango, jitterbug, and the foxtrot. There are about sixty members in the club ranging from Term Ones to big Term Eights. The term does not make any differ- ence as long as you want to have fun. The long felt need for a club in which both boys and girls can participate finally has been filled by the organization of this club under Miss Lewis' able direction. Club of Missouri. The purpose of our club is to further develop capable and professional leadership among its members who will soon assume im- portant responsibilities in the field of distri- bution. Our DE Club provides a means of integrating the Distributive Education program with other school groups through joint spon- sorship of projects and through recreational and social activities. Our D.E. Club attempts to help the members develop an understand- ing of the many problems in retailing and to encourage the members to give their best in time and effort on the job. lt further at- tempts to interest members in that phase of retailing in which their abilities may be de- veloped to the best advantage and also to strive for the development of proper coopera- tion between members and their fellow em- ployees. One of the D.E. Club's most recent active- ties included the State Convention which was held on March l9th and 20th at the Melbourne Hotel in St. Louis. Many of the students in the Distributive Education classes participated in some of the contests, namely, the sales contest, fashion show, math and spelling con- tests, window display, and many others. The convention proved a valuable experience for all D.E. Students. The DE. Club's work at Cleveland can be summarized in its adopted motto, D.E., A Plan for the Future. 79 Row One: Jane Harnpe, Mary Ann Heldmann, Noel Kring, Emelia l-leldmann, Mary Towns, Judy Barbos, Judy Dressler. The team began to iell last season as we took several second places. With six returning lettermen the team looked promising for the l956-57 season. This promise was fulfilled when the Dutch musclemen took first place in the O'FaIIon meet. In a heart-breaking meet at the Northside Y.M.C,A. another first was missed by only six-tenths of a point. Determined to do better, the now- seasoned team ran away with the meet held right here at Cleveland. Not only did we take the first place trophy, but we garnered nineteen of the twenty-four medals, Weakened by the loss of four seniors to January grad- uation, the team resolutely faced the meet at Beaumont in March and at St. Louis University in April, anxious to uphold our supremacy. Prospects for next season look bright, with many of the high scorers coming back with another year of experience under their belts John Held Roger Metz Bill Thien Jeff Herbst WHAT IS A GYMNAST? A gymnast is a unique sort of person who is fanatically and forever loyal to the sport of gymnastics. He will travel any amount of miles to see a better gymnast perform and considers his chosen sport unjustly neglected by publicity. His language is flavored with terms such as cut-aways, hip-circles, and peach-baskets, and one of his ultimate goals in life is to do a perfect giant or fly-away. He has days when he learns new tricks well and old tricks better, and days when he can't even do the old ones, Although disgusted he always returns to try again. A gymnast is apt to neglect his girl friend, unless she's another gymnast. He takes cruel delight in converting others to his sport and is willing to spot them while they learn. He likes swimming, diving, cheeseburgers, bouncing on a trampoline, photography, ice-skating, chile, having his pic- ture taken, and girls. He does not like slow cars, weight lifting, dull parties, being over-weight, getting home early, cold showers, warm-up calisthenics, and forgetting his towel. Where can he be found? Why, in the boys' gym of course. Al Brennecke Mike Russo Bob Holdegraver e 2 ' ,I V., l we K, i ,,,, 4 .fm -M-mf' if , , ' 3123, . , sf ' fi ' . -' f-131 ' be .
